  • Nice, hard pressed to find these for under $400 usually.

I'd get one but recently got a Dell Mini with an 8700T.

I'm a bit torn between something like this and a mini pc from beelink with newer technology

      • +1

beelink 100% in my mind. But these are a great deal.

      • +2

        how about the minisforum options?

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/855313

        • GMKtec also good. Bulk brands out there

      • +1

Which beelink has newer tech for around the same price?

        • -3

You mean out of all the brands we just talked about?

          • @Budju: no i mean which newer Beelink has better tech but still around the same price?

            • -5

              @mhz: All of them. I don't know.

  • +1

FYI, these are slightly faster that the 8500T, and about the same speed as the higher-power i5-8500.
All 6 cores and same GPU.

    • +11

10500T got double the threads which might be helpful in some cases.

      Cheers,
      Jun

      • +3

        Moar threads means moar VMs

    • 10th gen has hyper threading

      • Hyper hyper!

        • +1

More L3 cache!! Cashe is king!

    • +2
      • +1

10th Gen also has VP9 encode/decode, while 8th Gen just has VP9 decode.

    • +1

      Same iGPU as well.

  • +2

Can you add additional storage to this? Specifically 2.5”?

    • +1

      Bays
      (1) 2.5 in Internal storage drive

      • +1

        No caddy included though

      • +1

        No caddy though

      • +1

Can you just leave the hard drive dangling in there? I did on the Dell Optiplex SFFs.

        • +6

Not a problem if SSD, but HDD should be properly mounted.

        • +2

Haha, same for SSDs, but as bargaino mentioned HDD should be mounted properly. Just string it up with cable ties… somehow?! 😁

        • +3

Double sided tape is the solution

        • Double-sided tape or Hook/Loop (aka Velcro) tape if you want to remove it without too much fuss. Even though you can leave a SSD dangling, In general non-portable electronics should be secured from vibration (SSDs do handle it much better as there are no heads, moving parts inside to damage). The only thing with tape is over time if it's lot of heat the tape becomes loose.

I found 32 GB of ram as a daily driver wasn't enough and was running out of memory and paging to disk more often than I would like. I usually have more than 2 IDEs open though plus other stuff.

    • Looks like you're out of memory.

  • Would this be sufficient for a media "PC" behind a TV for mainly streaming purposes?

    • +4

      More than enough.

      • +2

        Get Apple TV 4K

    • +15

Putting $299 towards a dedicated streamer would be better IMO, either an Apple TV or an Nvidia Shield TV Pro (or equivalent).

Unless you have specific use cases requiring a PC.

      • +3

Agree. Just get a dedicated streaming box. Simpler faster, no Windows updates.. Unless you install kodi etc on it yourself. But can just run kodi on a google TV 4K with kodi too for much cheaper. (though Def wanna get a type c dongle with ethernet and pass through power if you go gtv option)

    • +5

I put these behind TV's in boardrooms for a cheaper solution for a teams room.
just add a wireless Keyboard, Mouse and webcam on top and works fine.
Just annoying when it does a MS and runs updates / reboots / etc.

      • +1

thanks everyone, I have been using a Google 4k stick, but worked out that it doesn't play well with streaming from the free to air services back home. I used the router built in VPN function but the streaming is unusable. doing the same thing with a laptop works flawlessly.

Just working out the alternatives… :)

      • +1

Just set it up to update overnight and leave it running. They don't really use much power idle (especially in a commercial context).

      • +1

Interested as to how you set this up - do you install the Teams room software? Or how do you handle different people logging into it etc.

    • are you talking about doing an *arr setup on on this?
      should be ok for that

  • +2

    But, can it run Crysis?

  • +4

Is the 32GB RAM option 1x32GB or 2x16GB?

    • Also keen to know, but I'm assuming the latter

    • I've had mis-matched RAM from metro com before. Probs one OEM plus one

  • +6

    Plex - Yes
    Solitaire - Yes
    4k - Yes

  • +3

Waiting pailtiently for N100 or low power ryzen mini pc…

    • How cheap are you looking for? I am interested fpr the tini GMKtec N97 with 12GB, 256GB. Its new amd about $229.
Just wanted to know if anyone has one and how it is

      • For N100 mini pc with 16gb ram, i think i saw the cheapest deal was something like $160 so that's kinda the price I'm looking at, or at the very least under $200

    • +1

Isn’t 10500T much faster than N100? I may be confusing my chips here…

      • Yes, but N100 is much lower power draw. I'm assuming this is for a router or low power single use device like Home Assistant or just interfaces for Home Assistant

        • +1

I'm planning to have few things running there like bitwarden server, pihole, homebridge, and kodi

      • +1

Yes but 10500T also 9 times more power usage compared to N100 (45W vs 5W)

        • ahhh makes a lot of sense. but then I guess unless you want an x86 platform, getting a rasberry pi would be better? though not that much different.

          • @Larsson: Yeah i suppose i could get raspberry pi 5, but from what i read, N100 is more powerful than rpi5, and i really dont need the gpio pins anyway. So I'm leaning toward N100 between these two but yeah if rpi5 ever goes into deep sale then I might consider it!

Also from what i learned with rpi3, its not always easy to get arm architecture version of a server software, but I'm not exactly an expert so no comment on this part of argument

        • 10500T does not use 45W at all times. My similar dell optiplex 7080 with the same 10500T draws less than 6watts when idle.

Both of these are x86 CPUs. The N100 has advantage of 10nm where as 10500T is on older 14nm. The 10500T has the grunt to do task quickly when required but not the weak 5W max N100.

For example you can use the N100 as a desktop PC but you will be unhappy when doing certain tasks. So choose your hardware according to your needs wisely.

  • i have a couple light guns and i was looking for something that can run games like point blank, house if the dead virtua cop etc. anyone know if 1 of these will work?

    • +1

Yes. I have a lenovo tiny with i5-6400T and it runs point blank X ok too.

    • Can you tell me which light gun you got?

      • i have 2 Sinden guns

        • Neat thanks! Since it's almost impossible to find light gun arcade machine these days (like time crisis), maybe its time to bring the arcade machine to me instead

    • I'd love to get some details, or even some good hints, about how you run this setup.

      • ill let you know how it goes. pulled the trigger today. got 1 with 32GB of ram. not sure what software im using yet. heard Batocera is the easiest. also teknoparrot. honestly not great with computers so ill just follow some youtube tutorials and hope for the best

  • can this have a second ethernet port for ofsense

    • This PDF (https://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c06640086.pdf) (assuming it’s the correct specs for this model), shows it can only be configured with one ethernet port (page 2)

Not sure if PFSense supports USB-to-Ethernet? Probably better to go another route though. Or buy the SFF form factor of this same machine.

    • Maybe? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/266404133386
Edit: Never mind, appears to say it's for an elitedesk 800. I'll leave it here anyway…

    • Yes you can get a usb-a Nic and use it. I use promox and then run ion sense as a vm. You can then run other vms or containers.

  • Would this be a good option isntead of N97 GMKtec mini pc, considering it only has 1xHDMI and obviously new tech

  • Not bad I guess, would prefer a few gens newer, depends what people are trying to do.

    • Would you say the new mini be better?

  • Ooohhh temping… I’ve been meaning to setup a dedicated pc to run frigate nvr after my pi with home assistant couldn’t deal with running it along side everything else..

  • Super tempting. If I did t have a dell 9500t from the previous deal, I’d jump on this.

But I think my money is better spent towards building a more capable server/nas combo myself with my old 3600x

  • -1

    any ethernet ports ?
    thanks OP

    • +1

      Yes, one.

  • Wondering if the specs are sufficient for teen kids?

Also is the 16GB ram 1x16 or 2x8?

    • Plenty as long as they're not gaming.

      • They can game on it depends what game and how miserable you want their life to be.

  • It's 519 on their eBay store less eBay discount code .

  • Bought three ThinkCenter with identical specs for $700 on marketplace last week.
IT manager is a lucky position I'd say…

  • Does the usb c port support DP alt mode? Power delivery?

  • +1

Run Proxmox on mine, awesome for home lab

  • Looking to pick up the 16GB one for $339. Any idea if both RAM slots are populated?

    • +1

It will be 2x8 but we can do 1x16 upon request.
