      yes it does….
      these are normal computers(but energy efficient for running 24/7 ), u have to load OS of your choice to run plex and other stuff

        It can run Plex server but generally seems to struggle transcoding higher bitrate files. So you need to take into account if transcoding is important or not. I thought about this but decided to build a more powerful NAS/server/desktop all rounder.

          I agree with you on this, the loss of performance combined with the power consumption of an N54L not being significantly less than that of a standard (Intel based) PC, means that the pros for the N54L are it's tiny form factor and that it is all self contained and ready built.

          For further comparison; we have 2 file servers here. One is a Xeon 1230 v2 (I think) with 5 Red drives and draws just below 50w with all drives spinning, the other is a dual core Pentium G3xxx with 11 drives which draws just above 60w.

          Mainly going to be used for transcoding.

          @ProjectZero: I know that this means spending more money, but if you have a modern Samsung TV the free Plex app is pretty good. My N40L can stream 1080 to that with no problems.

          @ProjectZero: I can't really recommend an OS for transcoding since I don't do it.

          Personally I use Fedora net install to a USB stick and share the drives via Samba. I run it in a headless setup with all config done via the command line interface.

          To learn Linux try CentOS in VirtualBox. I try every configuration change in a VM before I apply them to my actual server. It's a great way to familiarise yourself with the OS in a no risk environment.

          @forkus: I didn't know you could do that, kinda cool. I assume the CPU is ok with the relatively tiny cooler? Edit: Very important to note they are using the low powered version of the Xeon (the 'L' on the end of the model number). A normal 1230 v2 produces significantly more thermal output than the low powered versions and probably would not survive long with the small cooler. And dayumm, the cost of the CPU doubles the price of the server :O

        I have Plex on my N40L. Ubuntu Linux OS - Long Term Support release.(12.04 LTS which now needs to be upgraded to 14.04 LTS as of 8 July). Works very nicely - although I also don't think I've transcoded anything above 720).

        (Edit - correction - 12.04 OS support ends April 2017. It is the hardware enablement stack I have that is approaching EOL - and that's on 7 August, not 8 July - damn US m-d-y date format).

      Can't answer your question directly, but my n40L seems to run Plex ok, sitting on top of Windows server 2008R2. I haven't really tested transcoding above 720p, but I imagine that might struggle a bit. Of course this is only an issue if you're on a mobile device that can't do directplay.

      I run freenas on a GEN8 1610T with the plex server plugin, runs sweet.
      I did have to upgrade the memory to 8GB to get things running smoothly (keep in mind HP only recommend ECC memory is used that's a little more expensive).

      5 Years - we've been advised by Seagate (Australia & New Zealand) and it has never changed.
      the Seagate website have been updated to reflect 5 years again.

          Have you thought about buying the N54L and running XPEnology on it (Synology's DSM)?

          I have that running on mine now after previously having a DS211j and balking at the prices they were asking for the 4/5 bay Synology's.

          You don't get any support from Synology of course, but at half the price and the ability to easily run 6 bays in the N54L for me it was a no brainer.

          Cheers for that, looks like a pretty good alternative. I like the Plug-and-Play aspect of buying a Synology NAS unit, but for a few hundred bucks of saving this is definitely worth looking at.

          Yeah I've been running it for a couple of weeks now and it's great. My old DS 211j was getting a bit slow running the DSM 4.3 (poor thing only had 128MB of ram) so running sabNZBd as well really made it crawl a bit.

          The interface now and all the operations of running XPEnology are a treat. Plus being easily able to use all the iOS apps that Synology have as well is great. Definitely handy basically being able to do everything on it with my iPad!

    Hi guys, I have been thinking about these for a while. I recently bought a Chromecast and want to save all movies etc on a server and stream using Chromecast or my phone. Would this set up work with that?

    And is speed the main difference between n54 and the gen8? And what does that mean for a basic user like me?

      Yep, exactly what I'm doing. 6 x 4TB HDDs in the N54L running FreeNAS and providing around 15TB of dual-redundant network storage. I recently got my first Chromecast and was playing MKVs (with AAC audio) for hours last night direct off the NAS without any glitching or anything, just perfect! I've just learnt from todays Chromecast deal thread that FreeNAS allows plugins to be used (Plex etc.) which will provide a really slick UI on the phone/tablet to control this so I know what I'll be doing this weekend :)

      For a basic user there's no reason to pay the extra and go for the G8 in my opinion. Save your money and spend it on HDDs or RAM to boost up the N54L and be aware that I'm not sure how many N54Ls are left in global stock so this could be one of your last opportunities to get one of these legendary Microservers.

          it comes with 2GB of stock RAM. You might want to upgrade it and it is not necessary to use ECC RAM. A graphics card can take off load from your CPU to transcode your movies. Many users like Xpenology, FreeNas. If not just install Ubuntu or Windows

          If you decide to go with FreeNAS (an excellent solution BTW) prepare yourself for a learning curve to be more like a solid vertical line or cliff face! The saving grace with it is that there's SO much online assistance from the massive global FreeNAS community so you should be fine. The documentation is very good but there are 10-15minute YouTube vids that can help even the absolute beginner get their head around it all but once it's up and running you'll be rewarded with such rock solid reliability you'll forget it's even there!

          Also, depending on what storage configuration you're going to go with (mirrored or striped etc.) and how hardcore you want the redundancy to be then you'll definitely need more than 1Gb… no question about it.

          To be honest, get the N54L now before you miss out because they're suitable for so many configurations. Once you have it you can then start planning your system and who knows, you may even decide to just setup a basic Windows based file 'server' instead of going with FreeNAS (but I highly recommend FreeNAS).

          I bought a N54L from SE and is extremely happy with their service. I already have hard drives (pulled out from Seagate Expansion drives). You might want to grab some non-ecc ram, if I am not wrong you can mix non-ecc and ecc ram together. However, I wouldn't grab the Gigabyte HD 6450 card, but the Asus HD 6450, as the Asus is fanless (out of stock atm).

        Well, I have a Brix (which should be the same size as the slimline Intel NUC's), and they look 'nicer' I guess.

        But you will need MSATA instead of a traditional 2.5, and they usually cost more.

          I C…it must be really PERFECT situation seeing that the difference in thickness is 1.7 cm :).
          Prior to this, we did not have plans to keep much of the stock for the thin ones, but we might do a query and see if we can bring in on board for our Intel NUC deals if we can get a good deal for them.

      Yes. The Asus HD 6450 is what I have. Or, you can run a separate mediaplayer box (eg: a NUC, Raspberry Pi, Xbox, PS3/4, etc), and just use the N54L to host the media files.

        The non-ECC (Kingston) stuff will work fine in a microserver for most purposes, you can save some serious bucks on that! ;)

      Hi mate..I downloaded XPEnology v4.3 to try out on an old PC…while waiting for the N54L to arrive….but the thing kept giving me errors like "unable to install buzzer stop button pressed" and the like…this is on a celeron notebook.

      Then try on another old Atom netbook and the thing just hang at the boot screen…

      Is XPEnology only working on the N40L/N54L and not ordinary PC?

        Good to see you got it all working. Yeah it seems the drivers for certain devices are needed in the USB boot loader.
        The N54L and the like are a good option for it as with how popular they are, are fully supported.

        I take it you're running GNOboot? I'm using nanoboot instead as I wanted to run DSM 5. It's running amazingly well (so far touch wood).

          yep. I am using nanoboot and DSM 5 with the update 2 patch. running fine on a test notebook….although the download station torrent download is rather slow….I wonder why.

      Are you talking about the n54l or the gen 8? Either way, USB speeds shouldn't be too important, you're supposed to network attach them. The only things I've put in the USB on mine was a nano receiver for a Logitech k700 keyboard, a USB sound card, and this one time only (in over a year of having it) I put a portable HDD in to copy some files, but I just left it overnight as there was no time pressure.

    Can someone give me advice please?

    I will be installing cat6 around the house soon and in the market for NAS.
    I plan to have all media on NAS and have it plugged into the network ethernet port
    Both TV's will be plugged into network via ethernet port cord too
    Media room TV (main TV) for movies is 2014 Samsung smart TV
    Most likely have Chromecast and WD media server too with 5.1 sound
    Was looking at DS214 play
    Now this has come up

    I'm looking for four spare ODD (optical disk drive) screws for either the N40L or the N54L (they are the same). They are the four with the larger heads usually found screwed into the back of the front door.

    I have used Shopping Express quite a few times and have enjoyed good service etc. But this is the first time I have seen glaring discrepancies with the description of the product.

    My problem is with ONE of the two advertised Gen8 NAS boxes.

    This is incorrect and false:-
    1. The "HP ProLiant MicroServer G8 Gen8 Intel Core i3 G1610T Server NAS" - actually becomes via clicking on the link a "HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 Intel Core i3 G2020T 1P 2GB-U B120i NHP SATA 150W PS Server NAS 712318-371".

    This one is correct:-
    2. The "HP ProLiant MicroServer G8 Gen8 Intel Dual Core G1610T Server NAS" becomes "HP ProLiant MicroServer G8 Gen8 Intel Dual Core G1610T Server NAS 712317-371".

    Referring to #1 - it starts out as advertised as a "i3 G1610T" then becomes a "i3 G2020T" and yet NEITHER is a i3. It is listed on Intel's site as a PENTIUM. What gives..? It is NOT a i3 CPU machine..!
