  • I know this is not the right place for this, but if anyone is interested, I have 2 x N40L power supplies and case fans for sale (in QLD) - PM me if interested. I did the "silent" upgrade (PicoPSU and slipstream case fans). Still haven't worked out how to spin down the Seagate drives in the raid array, so a pointless exercise really !

    Hi rep,

do you know if the HP gen8 supports non-ecc memory?
    thanks

  • Hi Everyone, looking for some expert advice here in order to make a decision.
Am looking for a NAS device that could cater for the following requirements
Runs 24/7 while connected to my router
Capable of streaming high quality movies
Capable of backing up my files off the computer
supports 2 bays to run raid 1.

Which of the above would be the most suitable/ cost effective way (we're on OzB after all)

    Cheers everyone

    • So long as you know how to set it up then yes, yes, yes and raid I don't remember but is raid really still necessary these days?

Awesome systems these little HP microserver's I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

      • +1

Raid is necessary more than ever I'd say… though the maths of rebuilding means its not good enough given the hdd error rate and the size of them.

  • Guys, need suggestion. Which one better N40L, n45l or g8. My plan is to use it as media storage and maybe as a web server also

  • Got this deal yesterday. DOA…is Good price a trade off of bad warranty services???

    • What do you mean by bad warranty? If its DOA just yesterday how are you already complaining?

      • +1

I've bought from ShoppingExpress a number of times before. They provide better customer service than brick and mortar stores. cough cough Harvey Norman should learn from SE

email the rep on [email protected]

        • +2

Agreed. One of the things that's kept me buying from shopping express despite there being a hiccup with the first order was how that hiccup was handled. They accepted full responsibility, had a positive attitude, and didn't ever try and get me to cover return shipping or anything, they paid for all costs associated with sorting it out.

Now, that might just sound like how they are required to handle it by law, but there are plenty of retailers who've tried to make the customer feel like they were in the wrong and you have to push and push and push to get them to accept their legal responsibilities. Shopping express just stepped up right away with a "sorry, let's get this sorted" attitude.

Not just good price, incredibly fast delivery it seems.

But I do think you are mixing up terms here- the warranty service is what comes next after you have the fault, and sure can be a reflection on the retailer, but the fact the item was DOA should point your irritation at the manufacturer (though after months of forum reading I don't get the impression these microservers fault often).

Just to check though, if you got the N54L you do realise there is no hard drive or OS installed right?

  • Hi rep, any chance you could better the price of your Qnap TS-220? You can pick this up at $254 retail in most specialised shops. Check this out http://penta.com.au/network-attached-storage/qnap-nas/qnap-t…. How about reducing it to a "real" sale price huh? Yes? :)

    • Can't do better price for it - but if you need any of the Hard drive options above, it works out better than ordering from Penta. In addition, i can confirm with you we have both the NAS and Hard drives in stock and dispatch time should be very prompt.

      Regards
      SE

      • Got the hard drives already, they just need a new home. Hopefully next time, post a real bargain, not like this one at least. People come here hoping to find the best buys. Some reps take advantage of the fact that thousands of people browse this website every hour (like myself) and see that oppurtunity to advertise. Not pointing out on you. Just saying. :) Thanks anyways!

WARNING !!! Never buy from PENTA
Penta commonly turns up cheapest on static ice. I've bought from them before and I would never go back. I believed them when they told me the laptop was perfectly new, but in reality it had fingerprints all over the screen and BSOD frequently. They refused to refund it saying they take no responsibility after the sale.

        • Was just looking at their shipping policy. "Customer is responsible to pay the freight for DOA Product Return Back to Penta Group". Pretty sure that runs against ACCC rules for warranties. I would not buy from a place like that. Well, unless there was one near me and it was really cheap, because I am a tight arse. But certainly not online, as the risk would be too high.

        • Not really buying from them. I always prefer to buy locally so I can inspect the item first and returning it wouldn't be a problem. They're (Penta) just there so we can ask for a price match with our favourite store like Officeworks (thanks for all our seagate hard drives) :)

  • N40L sold out?

  • Newbie in NAS..

If i buy the server including with 1x 2TB hdd installed, can i upgrade/install the other 3x 2TB later on without worries losing my data (or move it to somewhere else) in the first 2TB?

should i have installed 4x 2TB at begining?

  • Hmm, didn't realise this expired tonight until it was too late.

Any idea when the HP Microservers will go on sale again, rep? The G8 model in particular.

    Thanks.

    • i was very tempted to buy one, however given the technology trend is to go down in price, and by the looks of it the aussie dollar is on its way up again:
      http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=AUD&to=USD&view=1M
(and given the US government shutdown and debt ceiling - that has to be making people nervous)
I rekon next sale these trends will continue wouldnt be surprised if its about 15-20% cheaper by xmas…I rekon 12% on the USD to AUD, and a few % in natural decline in price on tech…

in addition, if 5TB drives do come out - 4TBs should also drop in price, making the package more affordable in general…

I'll be interesed to look back on this post in 2-3 months and see how accurate it was.

      • be surprised if its about 15-20% cheaper by xmas

if you look at this historic pricing of these microservers, when 'on special' they always end up around this price.. same price I paid for the N40 2 years ago for instance

Won't be any 20% drop on this price

      • Or buy now with a credit card with price protection and enjoy it

N54L seems to be holding its price till the 6th of October.

    Such a good price.

  • Hello guys, in your last NAS sale you bundled a graphics card with the N40L that doesn't fit because of the size of the heat sink. I've asked for an return / exchange / replacement but haven't heard back since Monday.

    Could you please assist?

    Ref id is:
[#22093]: RE: Shopping Express Order Receipt #N00133078

    Thank you!

    • Hi cuteseal,

No worries, CS team will be arranging a return of the product today for an exchange.

      Kind Regards
      SE

      • Thanks rep… I still haven't heard anything today.
Any chance you can follow it up please? Thanks!

  • Mate I've been in the same boat. I got sent same incorrect GPU twice! Asked for a refund since i was sick of waiting and now they have just sent me the right one.

The customer is constantly ignored. I wish they would actually read emails/tickets and do what we request.

  • SE, any chance of microserver going on sale again soon?

  • +2

I'll just pop this comment in here for anybody's future reference.

    Power Consumption

Measured at the wall with an Arlec inline monitor

    HP N54L (with 4GB ram)

    • with no hard drives at all: 36W
    • with 1x Intel 60GB 520 SSD (Windows 7): 24W
    • with 1x Intel 60GB 520 SSD (Windows 7) + 2x WD20EARS (2TB Green) HDDs: 32W, 23W after HDDs entered power saving
    • with 1x Intel 60GB 520 SSD (Windows 7) + 4x WD20EARS (2TB Green) HDDs: 45W, 24W after HDDs entered power saving
    • with 4x Seagate ST2000DM001 (2TB 7200RPM) instead of WD20EARS the results were much the same

    For comparison

Generic PC (Intel G2020, 4GB ram, Asrock MicroATX, Thermaltake XT 775W PSU)

    • with no hard drives at all: 36W
    • with 1x Sandisk 120GB Extreme SSD (Windows 7): 30W
    • with 1x Sandisk 120GB Extreme SSD (Windows 7) + 2x WD20EARS (2TB Green) HDDs: 37W, 31W after HDDs entered power saving
    • with 1x Sandisk 120GB Extreme SSD (Windows 7) + 4x WD20EARS (2TB Green) HDDs: 51W, 34W after HDDs entered power saving
    • with 1x Sandisk 120GB Extreme SSD (Windows 7) + ATI HD7850: 65W, 125W while gaming

Overall I was disappointed with the power consumption of the N54L. I expected more of a difference between a standard PC and the microserver. These micro servers (in my opinion) are chosen more for there form factor rather than power consumption.

A Generic PC can be built for ~$250 and can support more drives (8 in this build). It is also quieter than the N54L which has a quiet 120mm fan accompanied by a whiny little 40mm fan on the PSU :(

    Note:

    • most values are +/- 2W.
    • I read somewhere that the power difference between a ATX mainboards and a MicroATX mainboard was significant, and I would imagine the same between MicroATX and MiniITX. I predict a MiniITX build with a G2020 CPU (or current gen equivalent) would consume power equal or less than the N54L, whilst performing better.
    • Under CPU intensive tasks the Generic PC will consume more power, but will complete the task quicker and therefore may be more power efficient.
    • thanks awesome write up, would love to see the difference the G8 makes… but yeah atleast opens up the door for me to build a normal PC now given its not too much more… I thought it would be heaps more.

Id also love to see how many KwH's each system uses over a month.
