Catch of the Day Pressure Cooker Sale

Members only special event on Wednesday 23rd of September 2009.

Hey guys,

I know how unpopular this might be with some, but if you are quick AND lucky, you might just score a bargain.

PS3 Slim $339
Wii $199
DS Lite $99

Yes these items are probably the only ones that are worth while, Yes it is there as bait, Yes it is probably not an ethical business practice… and again, the site WILL go down and you WILL need luck. So, if you're not up for it, then feel free not to participate (gives me more of a chance :P)

Cheers

  • +2

Wow, reading the @ tweets for Catch of the day on twitter. Theres a LOT of hate out there! lol

  • +4

This whole thing is the biggest scam I've ever seen. I can't believe I wasted a whole day trying to get a deal when I couldn't even connect to their goddamn shitty servers.

I am never going to CotD ever again. Great job ruining what seemed like a good idea for a site and letting down all your loyal customers.

  • +6

oh well.. i must admit.. i am quite loyal to cotd and i've been following the pressure cooker the whole day.. this marketing stunt wasn't very good actually.. it is very obvious what cotd is trying to do here and the way the server load is not able to keep up, it is very suss that they even sold any of the good items to their loyal customers.. if anyone is from cotd here.. let me tell u that this was a very badddd moveee.. i've lost quite a lot of confidence in the site…

    • +2

I especially like the Samsung camera you couldn’t "bite" as the button NEVER showed up.
I think ALLLLL who have attempted today should get one for nothing….heck its only $79!

      Think of the loyalty then!

      • +1

And on top of the button not showing up the item was still shown as "sold"

      • +1

You do have to seriously wonder how it can sell out when the button to buy it wasnt even showing. Proves that people were using direct links which is a crock.

  • -1

I cant believe all the hate thats on this forum too! Have you people never experienced a COTD anything-a-thon? The servers ALWAYS die, its ALWAYS like a lottery when you get something and its USUALLY VERY frustrating! Nothings changed!

  • -1

So another one ove cause the next item will be crap didn't get anything but didn't really want anything. I look forward to the next 1 these days are one of the most entertaining days on the net so much complaining and excitement its great to watch and read.

See u all at the next one I'm sure all u's that say never again will be back it sucks u in :)

  • Yer but is anyone getting any thing out of this sale?

  • LAST ITEM

    THE BOX OF POOKI
    6 MYSTERY ITEMS FOR $9.95

  • Box of pooki……… wheeeeeeeeeee….

  • I bought some pooki :P why not.

    • +1

mate trust me the stuff really is crap…they not kidding.

  • Well one dude got a nintendo ds lite. Anyone else manage to buy anything (NOT items that were free/just pay shipping or under $20), like ipod/ps3/ds/hair straightener? Cus I didn't manage to get anything… I DID kind of give up ~1:30pm though.

  • +1

this was always going to end the same way…poorly. This is just what this site is all about, i only buy stuff off them if really good deal only and its realistic to buy one.

They take advantage of your impulse so best not to give in.

  • +1

The last item is very funny. Actually it shows the essence of Catch of The Day and their business model.

Here it is from their description for the last item:

    THE BOX OF POOKI

    6 MYSTERY ITEMS FOR $9.95

And what is the box of POOKI?
Here is the COTD's owner answer:

    • "Pooki" was one of my baby daughter's first words, and it was her way of saying "Crap".
    • We've now adopted the word, to describe "Mystery Items"
    • Today for $9.95 you receive 6 such Pooki

HUH! He makes money out of CRAP!
Very nice in the face of those who defend this guy.

    • +3

i think we all had some of cotd's pookie thrown in our face today

  • +1

yeah but still there are people out there that will buy the box of crap straight away….those people seriously need shopaholic help!

best way to protest this site poor checkout system is not to buy these impulse crap buys.

  • This is the email response from cotd.

    Dear Valued Customer,

We would like to thank you for your support. More importantly, we would like to express our sincere apologies for the difficulties you may have experienced throughout yesterday's Pressure Cooker event.

    We have received countless emails (both positive and negative) in regards to this event and we would like to address some of the concerns and complaints which were brought up;

Firstly, to answer the most common question; Yes, all the popular items are gone, you know what they are!

    Unable to access the site:
On a special event like this, literally hundreds of thousands of customers try to access the site within the same window of a few seconds. The site is bound to "lock-out" due to the amount of enormous traffic.
Everybody had the same chance to snap up some of the ridiculous bargains. Unfortunately when there is only limited quantity many will miss out.

Some get locked out even before being able to view the item, others after clicking "Bite me". Some while going through the checkout and trying to pay.
Without getting into too much detail, when our server is filled to capacity, the site is unable to accept the load. It is required to temporarly disable the users from entering or proceeding even at the checkout when the item is sold out.
This can be really frustrating considering you have gone all the way through to the payment page only to be locked out. Please note that our systems and servers are top-notch and a server that could successfully handle the sheer numbers of visitors we had during the Pressure Cooker promotion don't yet exist. The only other way we could lighten the load and make it easier for users, is to have less people visiting. This would require having worse deals, and we aren't really interested in going there…

    Unable to complete checkout:
Due to a lot of reasons and after a lot of trial & error, we have structured our site so that you only secure the selected items if you have paid for it and your order is completed successfully (meaning that you have received a confirmation email with an order number).
There may have been 1000 customers with the same item in their shopping cart with one last unit left.
Therefore the finish line is completing the order and paying for it, unfortunately it is not just getting it in your shopping cart.

    Location:
There was some concern that only customers in VIC were able to get through. This was not the case, as there were orders from all the different states and as expected, majority were from the bigger states. The evenly-spread results show that Victorian customers had the same chance as anybody else.
And to keep it fair, all CatchoftheDay employees were banned from this event, naturally!

In closing, we'd like to offer our deepest apologies once again. We'd like to wish our new customers all the best in finding more fantastic deals in the current Catch-A-Thon. We'd like to remind our existing customers that our SOS deals will continue getting better & better (sure not as insane as the Pressure Cooker prices, but still pretty great, you've got to admit!). And to all of those Bargain Hunters out there, we promise to have a lot more incredible prices yet, so please, keep a look out!

If you have any further suggestions, please feel free to send them our way; they definitely won't go unread. However due to the overwhelming response to this particular sale, we may be unable to continue email conversations on this topic as there is nothing further that we can offer and any leftover stock is on today's Catch-A-Thon.

    Kind Regards,

    Nige

    Customer Service Supervisor

The only other way we could lighten the load and make it easier for users, is to have less people visiting. This would require having worse deals, and we aren’t really interested in going there…

    To Nige @ COTD,

How did that other site 1-day.com.au site handle better when they had the ps3 sale and Wii and also where a number of people from Ozbargain got through and got the specials ?

Why did COTD advertise a week in advance and apparently in the West Australian news paper knowing fully well its servers and sales system would not withstand the load based on the advertising it did ?

The concept of your store is good but you are now taking advantage of your customers by entering into malicious trading tricks.

I would like to know how to unsubscribe from your emails and i think a few others here prob do the same.

  • As others, got some items into checkout, try payment… no deal, crapped out, within the 1st minute…

How anyone can successfully get the site all the way through to successful payment is beyond me.

Not going to bother, other than the quality items they tease you with on these "gather tons of email address" catch-a-thons I've yet to be fully satisfied with a product/bargain.

My only participation from now on will be to try these days out for the elusive items, but I think we can all predict what our chances are… unsubscribed since the last catch-an-email-list.

Be nice of dear Nige to list the quantities sold of the ipod's, ps3, wii etc…

  • Unable to access the site:
On a special event like this, literally hundreds of thousands of customers try to access the site within the same window of a few seconds. The site is bound to “lock-out” due to the amount of enormous traffic.

www.catchoftheday.com.au is hosted with http://www.rackspace.com/index.php (An American company, you'd think they could support an Australian host..)

Rackspace offer an on demand scalable server solution http://www.rackspacecloud.com/
Basically this means that the more people who access COTD the more server resources are allocated

There is even a 30 day trial period which could have been used to evaluate the effectiveness during the pressure cooker.
