Is yours better / different?
The main chip is different.
what are the advantages of your unit's chip?
I would say that the fact it's a socketed DIL is superb for noobies and pros. If ya blow the main chip up, easy to replace for a buck.
T'other 'un…..chuck the whole thing if you can't des older surface mount easily,I do like the idea of an IC socket .. but when you weigh up the relative replacement cost, with the likelihood of the chip malfunctioning, and time/effort needed to diagnose whether the problem is with the chip or some other part of the board … it doesn't seem worth it to me.
The cheapest I can find a replacement chip is $2.50 delivered .. whereas a whole new board is $7 delivered.
Each to their own I guess. However, I can see the advantage for situations where physically changing an IC is easier than unscrewing the board out from a case.@noz: I recently fried two arduino boards in one day. So it's pretty easy to blow this chip, especially if you are a beginner such as myself.
what is this used for… looks sweet but no idea what it is?
Really good price on the 'arduino' :-)
