Lots of Free Stuff Via Github for Students

1200

I got an email this morning from GitHub offering their Student Development Pack which includes a bunch of goodies including:

  • $100 in DigitalOcean credit (can be used even if you've used other promos) * Note that new accounts need a Credit Card or $5 deposit via PayPal for the promo code to apply.
  • Free .me domain name and SSL certificate from NameCheap
  • Free DNS management from DNSimple
  • Free BitNami access on Business 3 account
  • No transaction fees for first $1,000 in revenue through Stripe
  • Your GitHub account gets upgraded to a Micro account allowing private repositories
  • Unreal Engine access worth $19/month

And there is more on the page linked.

You need to have a .edu email in a degree or diploma course, I just signed up with my edu.au email and got full access.

Might not be for all people, but it's very handy for me and I'm sure some others. The $100 DigitalOcean credit is extremely nice.

EDIT: Also if you want another $90 of credits for DigitalOcean, there are a bunch of extra Promo Codes here DigitalOcean have now patched it to not allow multiple promo codes per account

    • I'll link that in the description :)

California Colleges will be popular today :D

  • Another thing I would put on there is the Unreal Engine 4 subscription… saves you $19 per month… I did want to play around with it for a bit and now I have the chance! (I got a 12 month subscription code for it)

    Thanks OP!

Just used avery old student email that I have (and weirdly enough still have access to) and signed up.

    It did say though

    Thanks for submitting!
You should be getting an email from us within a week.
    Have an Octotastic day!

I got the same message, followed the acceptance email about it almost instantly, so check your inbox soon (although, it may depend on the institution)

      • +1

Yeah I was just about to come back and edit my post saying I just got the email, but now I can't :-P haha.

Guess that's just a way to cover their arse if something does take a little longer behind the scenes!

  • Sweet, thanks OP

Does anyone know of a way of buying a .edu email account that works for things like this and dreamspark?

    • +2
      • So basically sign up for an undergrad course for $187 and I'll get an .edu email address or is there an easier way?

        • I think a post-grad course application is cheaper at $62.

    • +2

Enrol into an undergrad IT course, and cancel before census date (4 weeks into semester). Should be a no-cost deal, if you're eligible for HECS-Help.

      • +13

While this sounds like a good idea, the result of this is that you're possibly taking a position from someone that wants to actually do that course.

        • +1

So? Same argument can be said for people that get into one course because they didn't get into first preference and thus have every intention to jump ship into another course.

I'd do what theStinge said; IT always has free spaces, it's hardly popular or competitive to get into…but I'm a bastard and live off the tears of failed uni applicants.

  • When I click Get your pack it takes me to the Sign in page. What do I do?

    • +1

You have to have a GitHub account which when you're logged in it should take you to the form to request Education access.

  • Any Australian Uni accounts working ?

    • I use RMIT and it works great for me, although I did sign up to GitHub's education program about 5 months ago, but don't see why it wouldn't still work

      • Cool - thanks. Signed up with swinburne account now. Fingers crossed !

        • Yeah it should be instant. As Porthos said above they say they will email you once approved, it was instant for me.

        • @rldowling03:

Thanks. I got confirmation now as well. Trying to figure out now how to get the discount codes for other websites

        • +1

          @binary-zero:

You go back to the linked page for this post and it should have a button up the top that says 'Get your pack' which will link to the page with all the sites you now have access to.

Each site has a link which will either direct you to that companies website to signup or in the case of DigitalOcean it will reload the page and give you the code. Not 100% sure how all the redemptions worked as I've only used a couple of them.

  • If you are already registered as a student with GitHub, you will already have this pack added to your account

    • Correct. I just had to go to the linked page and click the button to activate it all

  • Where do I find the packs? under which tab?

    • After you have logged in and completed the form:

      https://education.github.com/pack

      • I tried to request one, but I get this
        You have submitted 1 request:
        Oct 10, 2014 for @xxxxx – Approved

In the billing section i have this.

Coupon: You have an active coupon for 25% off forever.

        • Odd. Is this under GitHub billing? Mine shows

'You have an active coupon for $7.00 off for 2 years, until 2016-05-17 (over 1 year from now).'

        • @rldowling03: were you able to get the pack?

        • @apnamasti:

Yeah I've redeemed the Bitnami and DigitalOcean ones no issues. I already had a student account for the GitHub coupon so not sure on that one. They may be overloaded with requests, while doubtful, you never know.

        • @rldowling03: I created a new account. and now i get what you get.

But how do I get the free stuff?

Edit: Never mind, the pack page looks different now.

        • @apnamasti:

Just head to https://education.github.com/pack and click 'Get your pack' and the offers are all on that page

  • It looks like you can only sign up to Namecheap if you're a US, Canadian or UK resident (unless you want to lie).

    • I had no issues claiming the NameCheap stuff with my existing account. I know they were giving away free .me domains to US, Canada or UK accounts, but using this Pack I was able to redeem it fine

      • I tried to do it through my unique link but it seems to just redirect me to the US/UK/Canada offer. What process did you go through?

        • I just clicked the link, put in a domain name and checked out which then asked me for my email, I just put in my personal email which then emailed me a verify link. The verify link just took me to a page to login or register for a NameCheap account.

Maybe you'll have better luck if you sign up to NameCheap first and then use the email on that account.

        • @rldowling03: I tried doing that just now but when I log in to complete the order, it requires me to enter an address with the countries being one of the three aforementioned.

        • @Eon-Rider:
Very odd, as I said it worked fine for me, so not sure why it's not working for you. Maybe try in a different browser or contact NameCheap support as the GitHub page doesn't mention any country restrictions

  • With Digital Ocean, is there no way to activate account without credit card or paypal payment?

    • No, you need to top up with PayPal a minimum of $5 I believe or put your credit card on there.

    • Prepaid card ? :-)

  • Didn't work with my TAFE email unfortunately. I have the dreaded .net.au address.

  • How much is it to register an .edu domain ?

  • +2

Thanks for the DO promo codes .. you probably should start another thread just for the codes :)

    • +1

Are you able to put multiple codes? I put one in and then the code area locked up

      • No it seems as though they only allow 1 promo code per user now :(

  • Fantastic. applied and registered my namecheap as well
quite a cool pack it is.
How many years you got for this package. I wish I said I will graduate even later… 2020 :)

  • Already had an account but linked my .edu email as well to get the freebies.

  • +1

I am sorry for my ignorance, but I just thought I would post this to help the noobs like me:
DigitalOcean is a simple and fast cloud hosting provider built for developers. Customers can create a cloud server in 55 seconds, and pricing plans start at only $5 per month for 512MB of RAM, 20GB SSD, 1 CPU, and 1TB Transfer.

  • Awesome! Thanks heaps, OP.
This is the kick I need to continue a pet project I had :D

How do we get the 1000$ free from processing fees for stripe?

I want to start a really basic site where I upload some interesting content that hopefully people find through google searches.

Does anyone know the best way to do this using the above promos? So need a domain plus hosting plus something to develop a site really easily - and I want it to be real cheap - and if it does get popular, easy to scale and not get ripped off.

    Thanks in advance gurus !

    • -1

I want all that, and someone to develop it for me cheaply, and someone else to come up with the idea for me…
A few billion people to click through to the site as well would be nice too.
Heck, if 10% of them bought something for a $1 that cost me less than a $1 to provide, that would be awesome.

      • +4

Not sure if you're taking a stab at me.

I'm asking for a cheap domain, a cheap host, and some basic easy to use interface to make my own site.

I'm sure there are many options for this.

I'm not asking for anyone to make the site for me, and i'm not asking for anyone to come up with any ideas for me.

        • +1

The pack gives you a free .me domain for a year from NameCheap. Can't help you with a cheap hoster, but I recommend WordPress for an easy to use beginner interface for a blog-style website.

        • +1

I would use Namecheap for the domain.
And Digital Ocean for web hosting.

  • Any idea why i was emailed this:

Unfortunately, we weren't able to approve your educational discount request.
You're welcome to re-apply, or follow up with any questions by replying to this email.

I signed up with my student email (education.nsw.gov.au) & just started a new account on github as well as i've never used it before

    • Probably because their site is not allowing that domain. Try contacting them.

      • Yeah apparently it needs to be .edu(.au)

  • Beware- Digital Ocean does not accept debit cards. According to their support page, not relying on credit makes you a fraudster.

Only way is to shell out $5 through PayPal.

    • That is wrong ! I used a pre-paid Visa card and it worked without a problem

  • I managed to do this fine with my alumni email address ;) @alumni.<university>.edu.au

But now I can't activate my DO credit because I already applied one code… :(
