Sorry to interrupt the fun with a slightly serious post, but just for anyone wondering, I looked into starting up a beehive from scratch once for fun (i.e., not to sell the honey; just harvest a few teaspoons every week or so). It involves a fair bit of messing around to start it up, cause you have to buy in a queen and enough workers to keep her alive while the hive becomes established. I wanted to set up a nice "natural" looking one that I planned to custom make out of a big hollow log (with concealed removable 'shelves' for harvesting some honey), so that was really my only option. If you just want a standard hive though (you know, those ones that look like Ikea furniture), probably much easier to just buy an established hive (though probably pretty exy).

I'm happy to stand corrected on any of this by an actual bee-keeper, but I seriously doubt whether there's any of them on this site…
If there are though, what's a reasonable price to pay for a queen-bee-with-workers (delivered) these days? There's huge variation in price out there… Some of the more exy suppliers boast superior yields/ longevity etc… For a non-commercial 'hobby-hive', is there any reason not to just go for the cheapest one though? (note, punsters, I was very careful not to say "Would the cheapest queen be adequate?)! ;P

This thread in another favorite forum of mine might give you some more insight.
      http://aussiehomebrewer.com/topic/36185-building-the-bee-hiv…
The premise is building the hives but I'm sure I recall discussion about getting bees.
      Mmmmmmm Mead :-)

    • +4

You're right that it isn't straightforward, and can be quite expensive to start up. A lot of people seem to be getting into it recently without any real understanding of what is involved.

To get a single hive up and running I often tell people you're looking at about $250-$300, this is for 2 supers, 20 wired and waxed frames, queen excluder, release board, lid and a swarm. I find the best source of bees is from swarm collectors, and depending on where in the season you ask and what the season is like, they will literally be giving them away.

It's recommended that you start with two hives if you are managing them yourself to deal with logistical issues down the track eg. Queen swarming.

On top of this price you need equipment to manage the bees and then come harvest time you need a lot more equipment, hot knife, trays, extractor, filters, storage equipment etc. It all adds up very quickly.

You can join a local bee keeping club for use of their equipment, but depending on how seriously you take the threat of foul brood, you may not consider this an option.

On the subject of foul brood, this is why you will see second hand equipment and hives so cheap. It may look like a bargain, but if any of the equipment or hives are carrying foul brood you are putting all your hives and equipment at risk. If you are buying second hand equipment, factor in irradiation of the equipment to sterilise it (will end up being cheaper to buy new in most cases). Most established bee keepers will avoid second hand because of risk, which is why it is selling so cheap.

    • +1

I think the gloves are more important.

    • +1

Or stand in a dark corner of their room while they're sleeping, making soft buzzing noises. Of course, the buzzing noises should get progressively more and more aggressive until you wake the kid up.
