Current Big W catalogue has the Kindle Fire HD on sale. This is quite an old model with limited 8GB storage, but a good display, 1GB RAM, battery life and dual-band a/b/g/n wifi. Don't have one myself but figure this is a good deal, should have full warranty from Big W. No indication in advertisement that these are refurbs. Pretty sure this is the 2013 with Bluetooth 4 and dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4470, and Fire OS 3.0 fork of Android 4.2.2.

From Big W advertisement:

    • The HDX is a much better device and with the Snapdragon 800 Quad-core 2.2GHz Krait, and 1200x1920 IPS display. It currently lists on Amazon for US$258.97 at amazon.com.au

However I was posting an item from a trusted Australian supplier (ok, it's Big W) with Australian warranty. If you understand you are getting an older model (I highlighted the good and bad in my OP). So if you are more comfortable with Big W and warranty, you have a value option.

sonicentryopy's post of the HDX listing at $199 for 16GB WiFi HDX is a bargain, provided you are happy with a third-party warranty (it's 36 months, very good).

Balls makes a good point - if you are planning to use a custom ROM, research your kernel/bootloade unlock options before you buy.

  • im using the hdx 7….it trumps the nexus 7 but lacks rom. the only aosp rom does 36k antutu and still on 4.2.2 due to locked kernel/bootloader
