I really should have thought of this before drilling holes through my walls to lay network cable!

  • someone needs rep status

  • whats the range of these things? is it to network a house? can i network a mate down the road? in another suburb? if encryption is required i gather that you can send it over to other houses?

    • have a google mate, they won't work properly if different parts of your house are on different circuits. yeah it's for networking your house.

      • Hmm…from what I've read, they just need to be on the same phase - most houses only have 1 - so might be ok? Can't use them through an EMI filtered powerboard though (most powerboards cause problems with these in fact) - also, turning high powered devices on and off can cause problems (things like electric beaters etc)

        • it's cheaper and more effective to use wireless or wired lan tbh.

          • @Davo1111: Wireless is never more effective (ie as reliable or as fast) than a wired solution.. Unless you live next door to an Aluminium Refinery or similar industry which dirties your power to the point that Ethernet over Power is rendered useless.

        • So no good on 3 phase then? I presume not. I know many homes on 3 phase.

          • @Zero Sydney: Yes and No.
As long as you have both units on the same phase it will work as well as if your home/office was single phase wired.

            Live Long and Prosper,
            Jean-Luc.

  • he was asked to get rep status before, and he still hasn't got it.

  • Can be a good option for some people, but sus it out first.

guys, this is not tech forum, its bargain forum.
I agree, this does not work on every house, its still a good bargain…

    its a yes from me

    • Me too. Good price.
Note you probably can't mix-n-match with other Homeplug brands (from Netgear, Dlink etc).

if i get 4 pack of this, can i connect 1 to my router and power point and the other 3 to other power points?

    • +1

Yes, you can definitely do that.

So long as the other three have been configured to the same encryption settings, then they will communicate with each other (basically they act like bridges, everything is passed through).

Like others have said, make sure you don't run them through a filtered power board, and be aware that 85Mbps is the theoretical limit. Real speeds are MUCH lower.

Be also aware that there are 200Mbps versions, and that while the real speeds are again MUCH lower, the benefit of these types of devices is that you do not need to run any cables or drill any holes, and they are not subject to the interference and fluctuations that can sometimes affect wireless networks.

I have a 2 x 200Mb Dlinks and I get between 30Megait-60Megabit which is plenty fast enough for my Audio Visual Center, I have noticed when the dishwasher is on the speed does drop but never goes bellow 3 Megabytes a second still fast enough for HDD video. Dont plug them into a powerboard anything with a filter, surge protector or RF choke will effect the speed. The 85Mb units will be good enough for internet and may get upto ADSL2 speeds through them, but I wouldn't attempt to stream HD video through them or copy a 20Gig file through the network. They do give you way more reliable connection than wireless and more secure, I doubt it would get through the ELD filters and the they equipment require to hack it is out of reach of the average joe. Wireless all you need is a $20 USB dongle a special Linux boot image and 2 to 64 hours (WEP 64/128) and up to a week for WPA they are stealing your Internets & looking at your network.

  • This is probably a n00b question, but can the points be on different circuits (ie. different circuit breakers)? Or is that different phases? Is there any easy way to test if they're on the same circuit?

    • There should be no problem running them across different circuits, as long as they are on the same phase.
All circuits on a given phase will originate from a common bus bar.
The exception would be any controlled/off-peak power circuit/s.
As for testing, the most straight forward method is probably to simply turn off the breakers one at a time and observe which power points/rooms are associated with each breaker/circuit/phase.
      I hope that helps.

      • mine are on two distinct circuits and style sync at the 200Mb/s sec, but they didn't like my belkin powerboard/filter

        • All of which agrees with what has been variously stated in this thread, so thanks for confirming from your real world experience ScienceDude.

  • can i have this unit plugged into my wifi router? I want to have both wifi for my laptop AND powerline ethernet for gaming in the end..

    THANKS!

    • No problem,, it's the same as running Ethernet LAN + Wi-Fi together.
AAMOF I worked with a guy who had wifi reception problems in his home, so ran 2 x wifi networks with ethernet-over-mains extenders connecting the 2 x w'less routers…

  • WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH LAYING SOME CHEAP ULTRA FAST LAN CABLE? Don't say, 'oh drilling into walls / double brick suck'. I live in a double brick house and the easiest solution was to lay it under the carpet and run it along the walls under the skirting board.

    • +1

There is absolutely nothing wrong with laying LAN cables under the carpet around the house, but wouldn't it be much easier simply plugging one of these homeplug devices into the power and off you go. Let's say if we live in a double storey house, imagine how long should the LAN cables be and how messy it's going to be. As someone have mentioned, these tools can be an option for some people.

I have ethernet everywhere in my place except my livingroom and I did the ethernet tapped under the tiles for a while, my girlfriend kept tripping over it it and it really became a point of friction. My first attempt to fix the problem I bought netgear 3500 Pre-N router and a Linksys 600A Bridge, but I had a lot of problems with dropout, in my area there are no unoccupied wifi channels, I borrowed a Linksys router and still had the same problem. At this point I had two options find a new solution or find a new girlfriend. I decided on the Dlink 303A 200MB Ethernet over power, it doesn't live up to the 200Mb/sec but its so much reliable and faster than wireless 270Mbs, my next place I am going to get Cat6 everywere.

        • +1

I wouldn't go for your second option. LOL. Wired connections are definitely more reliable than wireless connection. Although some people tend to choose wireless as is because it's cableless and it's hassle free. But it might not be the case for everyone.

The 200MB units may not live up to the max, but it's good if you are sharing the internet amongst few computers at home, sharing files over network or streaming HD (High Definition). Else the 85MB units are sufficient.

The D-Link Rangebooster products range, I find it they are also reliable for wireless purpose. I have installed these in a house with bricks and concretes all over the house. But it still seems to have a good signal from the other end.

I think (some of) you guys are missing the point of this a little.

I live in an apartment building with lots of wifi and 2.4ghz cordless phones so my wireless runs like a fat man on a treadmill. I put in a few of the dlink powerline adapters and now my xbox, media center etc.. runs brilliantly. Running cables is an absolute pain in an apartment, and many other people rent which is why running network cables isn't always an option (although I agree its generally ideal and will always work best, where you can do it)

as for the phase question above. yes they have to be on the same phase, but if you have multiphases and need a few installations, you can always bridge two units together to join the networks together. i.e. run a network cable between two of them and plug one into phase1 and the other into phase 2 - probably not cost effective unless you have a few of these running.

they really are a good solution where wireless isn't working well, and you can't run cables. just make sure you secure them properly!!

  • We have them in stocks now.

  • so………would these work with an xbox 360….. ie enable me to connect to xbox live?
