    • Did you even try the code?

Full specs here if tl;dr from Nokia site

  • What else is there for under $200 unlocked? (that can take a decent photo - I note this phone dosn't have a flash lol)

  • I've been interested to find a Windows Phone to play with. Anyone know if there's any reason this model won't get at least one more major update after 8.1? Seems like a neat little unit.

    • Probably won't.. It only has 1GHz dual core CPU and 512mb RAM

      • My 520 already has 8.1
Microsoft and nokia are attempting to follow the Apple approach and support phones for as long as possible. Every single windows phone 8 device will get 8.1 and future updates for the time being.

    • +5

It will get many future updates, until Windows Phone 9 I believe)

      • It does look like a good, cheap smartphone. Except no flash and no front facing camera!

        • +2

It is a very nifty one!

    • No way to know but it's quite possible until WP9

  • +4

free nokia navigation is a plus…

    • +2

Note that when windows phone 8.1 comes out, other non-Nokia windows phone devices will have Here Drive + for free.

  • This is a good phone, some negatives are- no camera flash, the length of the snooze alarm is 9 minutes which you can't adjust, the phone needs to be on for the alarm to work, you can't turn off the auto-rotate feature. I'm happy with mine though, many good features,it's a good size and easy to use.

    • +4

you can't turn off the auto-rotate feature.

Didn't this get fixed with the Lumia Black update, or just in the lock screen?

      • +4

8.1 will fix this. I've got the developer preview on mine now (install method here) and in the swipe down notification tray there is a "Rotation Lock" button

        • pretty happy with 8.1, better than 8.0, i think MSFT should call 8.1 as 9 not just 8.1

        • I thought 8.1 was out already. Anyway, bought one as a toy.

  • +3

I've got one of these as a 'spare'. Paid a similar price. [My regular phone is a Nexus 4].

So far, the Lumia 520 has been pretty impressive for a 'cheapy'.

No, the camera (rear only) isn't brilliant. It doesn't have a flash, but it is still good enough for snaps and for documenting important things - like your licence (when you've forgotten where you live :-) ).

Yes, the navigation apps are pretty effective. Used this last weekend when I need to find my way around Sydney and had failed to bring a 'real' GPS.

Phone uses Windows Phone 8.0 - I'm not at all confident that there will be updates on this platform. Bothers me not.

For a simple, moderately rugged (no glass back like Nexus 4) unit that I happily use without any cover or screen film, I think that the 520 is great value at this price. If nothing more, it is a small price to experience a Windows phone in comparison to the Android OS universe that I normally play in.

    • +2

"Phone uses Windows Phone 8.0 - I'm not at all confident that there will be updates on this platform. Bothers me not."

You will get 8.1 along with every single other Windows Phone device. Also will very likely get the next 2 updates (8.1 gdr1 and gdr2), no idea whats happening after that though….

      + $29 shipping

    • +1

plus shipping. Looks like a minimum of $29.

  • 512 MB is the killer. The 525 has 1 GB but I'm not how much they are going for.

  • This is probably going to sound strange but how does this compare to the Huawei Ascend G526 (Vodafone $159)? I know they are different in terms of windows vs android but I have been considering buying the Huawei and getting it unlocked but wondering if this would be a better option?

Or if someone can recommend a similar/better phone for around the same price or cheaper?

    cheers

    • I'd plump for the huawei g526 every time. I'm just waiting for dickies to hopefully have another sale on them. Great little phone

      • Thanks. So the G526 is much better then?

Yes I have been waiting for that too. I missed the $99 and $129 sales.

        • +1

Really, the only problem with the g526 is the lack of space and the lacklustre camera. It performs nearly as well as the nexus 4, has 4g and battery life (removable) is fine. Drawbacks for lumia are no support for 900mhz 3G (optus) not good camera and only dual core CPU and 512 mb. Nokia maps is fine but honestly google maps is as well.

I grabbed one at the 99 sale, my wife said she didn't want one. Now she is asking me to get one for her.

If I was in the market for a phone right now this is my order of preference:-

          1. Huawei g526 at sale price hopefully as close to 100 as possible
          2. Wait for oneplus one to come out for hopefully around 340 or so
          3. Huawei g526 for normal price of 159
          4. Moto G for 200
          5. Lumia 520
          6. 4g version of moto g for around 250 or so

To be honest I can't really see myself getting rid of the huawei unless it breaks or I can't get batteries for it.

        • +6

Windows phone 8.x runs really smoothly, the fact it's only dual core is not a problem at all.

        • Drawbacks for lumia are no support for 900mhz 3G (optus)

This is an unlocked version, so shouldn't be a problem.

          GSM network: 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz (http://www.nokia.com/au-en/phones/phone/lumia520/specificati…)

Afaik there are two versions, the em5198 and the em5199. The first supports 850 and the second 900.

The dse page indicates that this is the 5198. So more suited for Telstra. Make sure to check the box if you do get one.

        • Careful, there are 2 versions of the 520. One supports 900, the other 850.

All other lumias support both though.

        • +2

I just bought one unlocked and it says on the box:

          NOKIA 520.2
          GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
          WCDMA 850/1900/2100

        • Thanks for that, yep, good for Telstra and metropolitan Optus 3G. No regional Optus 3G.

  • +1

All Windows Phone 8.0 devices will be supported for a minimum of 36 months. ALL will get Windows Phone 8.1 (dependent on operator), however any major update after that, i.e Windows Phone 9.0, may not reach the lower-end devices. For the price, 512MB will still give you a very, very decent Windows Phone experience.

  • Wait till the Motorola Moto E journeys down to Australia, similar pricing but should be downscaled Moto G

  • I repent everyday for splurging on a windows phone. Too many apps missing.
Take your money elsewhere. I know I will be negged to infinity. That's just my 2c.

    • +4

Without sounding like a troll..what apps are missing for you? Maybe I or other WP users can suggest similar apps.

      • +3

        Isn't YouTube one of them?

        • There's plenty of decent third party YouTube apps.

Also the reason Google wouldn't allow MS to write their own YouTube app is now gone with HTML5 based app support in WP 8.1, so I'd expect MS to get something out sooner rather than later.

IE11 in 8.1 has better support for embedded youtube videos:

          http://www.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-81-improved-youtube-e…

        • MetroTube, all i can say is awsome.

works like a charm on my Samsung ativ s. Just pin to start screen

      • +5

I am not a troll. I am missing gumtree, anz, sydney trafiic info app…to name a few. And so many others that become free from time to time on ios/android….
I knew I will be negged as there seems to a quite a few pushing windows phone here. The phone is fine….just the ecosystem is crap….crap to the extent you need to look elsewhere.

        • +4

          m.gumtree.com.au
          m.anz.com.au
          HERE maps has live traffic

        • Are you saying they work as well as an app?
Sorry, I don't think so and my next phone will not be an windows one.
Need to get rid of it ASAP on ebay.

        • +3

Actually for both gumtree and ANZ the mobile sites work better than my previous iOS and Android apps. The mobile sites have full functionality where the apps didn't. And HERE maps, well that is an app.

You entitled to your own opinion, but don't bias others with incorrect information

  • Thanks mate. Got pricematched at OW.

  • Just tried to buy one, BUDGET seems to have stopped working "Coupon code "BUDGET" is not valid"……

  • Does Lumia 520 get worldwide maps and navigation, or just for Australia?

    • +2

Worldwide. Along with all Windows Phone on Here Maps

      • The maps for any country can be downloaded and used offline with gps on Here Maps. No need for internet access.

        • Saw this in Here.com
          http://here.com/help/wp8/drive/coverage

"If you have a Nokia Lumia 1320, 720, 625, 526, 525, 521 or 520, your HERE Drive app gives you turn-by-turn, voice-guided navigation in your home country, with or without a data connection."

That appears to be saying Lumia 520 provides navigation only in the home country.

          Maybe the page is outdated.

So someone has actually used the Australian version of Lumia 520 for navigation overseas?

        • +3

Short answer: No, HERE Drive won't work overseas on the Lumia 520, but HERE Maps will.

          Long answer:
HERE Maps and HERE Drive are two separate applications (both come with WP8). HERE Maps is the top-down street directory for route planning, getting directions, finding landmarks, your location via gps etc. You can open up your route from HERE Maps in HERE Drive for turn-based navigation.

HERE Maps can be used globally but HERE Drive is limited to the the maps of the phone sim's country origin on first use (Australia). For global turn-based navigation you'll need Here Drive+, however Here Drive+ isn't available/supported on the Lumia 520 or 720.

  • Thanks, Crys!

So Maps and navigation are separate in HERE.

That distinction extends to the desktop. Nokia released HERE Maps Windows 8 modern app a while ago. You get offline maps for many regions of the world, and no turn-by-turn navigation. Hope it's in the works.
