  • It's cheaper in the US Steam Store :S

    • But I hear they'll delete your account and all your games if they catch you using a VPN. Apparently it's something stated in their EULA.

      • Steam very, very rarely permanently disable accounts anymore.

They far more commonly simply remove games from your library that were either purchased via "grey" channels not meant for your region or stolen keys shared on Warez-like sites.

I had it happen in this instance, during the free Blackwell games bug, a bunch of them just disappeared from my library after Steam caught onto it (though the local files still remained intact and I could launch them manually; but these are SP indie games we're talking about not Triple-A titles with DRM).

In fact, Valve recently re-activated numerous "bad standing" accounts that were found to be using stolen CD-keys but simply removed the ability to purchase new games, trade, receive gifts, and activate serial keys. Not that they publicised this in anyway, but apparently there has been some policy change at Valve whereby, even accounts in bad standing are still allowed to retain their legally purchased Steam library.

Under the new policy, banned Steam members no longer have their accounts disabled but now have “account locking” set, meaning that while they’re able to access their games, they will be unable to buy games, redeem codes, or trade items.

Circumventing VAC will also only ban you from certain games multiplayer features (depends which game it is, as many of them share the same Steam game authentication servers). Singleplayer will obviously still work.

Hijacking accounts AFAIK, is what constitutes automatic and irreversible Steam bans in a majority of cases.

Doing a CC chargeback will also give you an automatic but usually temporary account ban until Valve gets their money.
