  • I've never been a fan of the "DIY" external hard-drive, the chassis they slap the HDDs in are very cheap and look quite tacky in my opinion. However, that obviously doesn't affect the performance or functionality of the drive.

I would be more inclined to purchase this 500GB LaCie drive instead http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/13901 which is admittedly $14 more expensive but has much better build quality.

Still, not a bad deal from Zazz.

    • yeah, but that's not really a fair comment unless you've seen the drive, 14 bux cheaper than an already pretty good bargain is even more of a bargain.

cant really tell they look fairly similar in quality. and this one has a WD drive inside which is another plus.

      • That's true wisc - I have not seen/used this particular drive, but it is a trend with aluminium enclosures. I'm not saying it's not a bargain, just critiquing it from a quality point of view. If you treat your goods with care then there won't be any problems.

  • cyssero: That is the biggest load of rubbish I've ever heard. The number 1 reason why "brand name" external drives fail is because of exactly that - poor build quality of their proprietary enclosures. They are no better than the DIY cheap external cases you seem to be poo-pooing.

    • +1

You clearly haven't handled as many of these drives as I have. The poor construction on these aluminium chassis is extremely evident. They often have nothing inside to absorb any bumps or shocks (not that anything will protect head crashes anyway).

They are extremely thin and susceptible to bending. Western Digital Passports, Seagate FreeAgents, Verbatim, Iomega are all made out of a much tougher plastic than the flexible aluminium they use in the DIY drives. There is a reason no brand name company uses aluminium enclosures, because they're not as strong.

I'm not here to spook people away from buying the drive. I don't think you can even get the internal 2.5" drive for a cheaper price. But I am saying the build quality is not as good as something more expensive, which is fairly obvious; just making people aware there are other options.

      • I was referring to "internal" build quality. When an external drive fails it is more often than not because of the cheap electronics used in the enclosure (both DIY AND Brand Name) where the HDD itself is fine.

I couldn't care less for the material used because that is not a big selling point. People should just look after their drives better when transporting them. I keep mine in a pouch where it CAN absorb any bumps or shocks. Thank you.

        • +1 cyssero, if you just want the internal drive, this one maybe a good bet…but I have sworn off getting external enclosures with separately installed internal drives…give me an OEM version any days & less hassles…

  • ordered one, thanks

  • lol "the sports car of pocket drives"..

It's a great price as the drive itself would cost you $138 from MSY.
So look at the case as $8.95 delivered to you.
    Bargain.

  • Can I remove the drive from the enclosure?
I might swap it with the one in PS3.
    Cheers,

      Can't see why not.
Zazz are even suposed to give you a screwdriver to do just that.
Great upgrade for a netbook as well.
