Just read this as Black magic

Still too much for what is a fiddly, difficult to charge (when you need to use it) input device.

Have they improved this mouse over the years?
I used one 10 years ago and would rather use a chalkboard touchpad with long nails.

    • Still the same horribly uneconomic design, battery is internal these days, was lining, now usb-c charging just recently.

My girlfriend likes them for some unknown reason.

      • *unergonomic *lightning

For anyone who has not used this before, it is great for occasional use, but it lacks any ergonomic design thus resulting in hand and wrist pain. I still don't understand why Apple hasn't considered an improved design.

Because it’s Apple (form over function)

    • Occasional when it’s out of battery. Somehow it discharges itself even when not using.

    • While the smooth scrolling is nice in Safari (I’ll give it that), jump into Adobe and your canvas will go flying off the screen in any unknown direction 20 times a minute. Unusable.

I’ve used one as my daily driver for years and in my view nothing else comes close. It’s all about the swiping (and macOS’s native cursor acceleration curve.
I do make use of a wrist rest though.
The charging port is a non-issue (but it’s very funny to me)

And if you add a third party utility such as BetterTouchTools, you can configure the surface to just about do anything. Quadruple finger tap, single finger tap while resting two other fingers, click with four fingers, draw circles, etc.

New model is about to come out that addresses the charging style.

    I’d rather a $9 wired mouse tbh

This is probably the worst Apple product. Please do yourself a favour and buy a master or anywhere Logitech.

What's the best alternative for apple magic mouse? I'm using logitech for replacing apple keyboard, but I don't find anything that can provide similar functionality to magic mouse.

      • +1

Logitech MX Master series. But I don't really think that side scrolling is more necessary than ergonomics, so I go with MX500-like shape regardless of the buttons.

How do you do mouse gestures that magic mouse has with that kind of form factor? They probably have alternative using their physical button, but then I'd stick with magic mouse just because I'm used to using their gestures and I don't think any other brand have similar functionality.

          • @yummypinacolada: You can google a video on how people do it. Somehow, this is the most recommended mouse for fans of Apple gestures. Use Google.

I think your comment reveals that you don’t know what mouse gestures are. These are where the top of the mouse can be used like a multitouch trackpad, so the Magic Mouse is really a combination mouse/trackpad design. It’s very clever.

              • @bcarp: Agreed. I'm all for cheaper alternatives, which is why I don't use apple keyboard. However, I just can't find anything similar to magic mouse, they're all just windows mouse with the support for macos.

Then this is Ozb, I can't say anything good about apple stuff.

                • @yummypinacolada: Ah, the Apple Magic Keyboard is a winner for me too, with TouchID built right into it.

      • I have both, when I need to travel and need something portable mx anywhere is pretty awesome I can’t fault it.

It won’t have the swipe functionality of an Apple mouse but the Apple mouse is horrible- the edges are sharp and ergonomics suck imo.

  • How is paying almost $100 for one of the worst mice ever designed, a bargain?!?

    • -1

Don't say that, you will be cursed by the fanboys. They pay thousands for a phone with a huge eyebrow in 2025, which has become a 3mm pinhole on even the cheapest Androids like 5 years ago. $100 for something outdated is nothing compared to that.

      • They pay thousands for a phone with a huge eyebrow in 2025, which has become a 3mm pinhole on even the cheapest Androids like 5 years ago.

That’s because the Apple sensors are scanning in 3D while the Android ones are scanning in 2D.

        • -2

That 3D is so bad so easily can be fooled, i.e. gives no benefits.

  • Has anyone seen the Magic Trackpad (Lightning) being cleared out anywhere? That would be worthwhile if so (I assume it’s also been updated to USB-C?).
