Belkin 4 Port Mobile Hub - $9 at Harvey Norman

90

So Harvey Norman must be going bust since their purchase of the dead company which was Clive Peters. anyway, the past few days we have seen many clearance sales, just picked myself up one of these hubs. Using it as a power converter so that my mums iPad mini can read and transfer photos from her Samsung Galaxy (which claims to be drawing too much power atm). I've read around and it seems most other devices seem to have this issue. Don't hold me to it, but a hub used as a bridge should fix this issue….hopefully. if not, whats $9….a large meal at HJs?

$9 is a steal. Ebay listers have them from $30-$50

HN had it originally for $25…or so PriceSlice.com.au claims

I'll let you know how i go.

(use as generic 2A USB charger?)

    • haha thanks man, but nah it's the Camera Kit adapter that doesn't read non-apple devices more often than not. If my limited knowledge is correct, the hub should work as a bridge for me and reduce the Galaxy power draw, meaning the photos and videos will copy form the phone to the iPad.

  • Really hard to find a pickup store in Melb…Watergardens has them. or $6 postage

Well the RRP on Belkins US site is only US$17.99 for this so I think street would be cheaper - Belkin make a lot of hubs!

Cant work out if these are "OTG" types hubs or just straight through connectors.

    EDIT:
    Yep, street is cheaper Lol

    • Doesn't ship to Aus?

    • $5.49 + $2.99 shipping = $8.48 and 2 week wait for delivery to save $0.52. not to mention international service fees from your bank.

      Go ahead. lol

No, I was contrasting the OPs suggestion that these are a massive bargain IE "Ebay listers have them from $30-$50" not actually suggesting you buy them from Amazon.
Still appreciate the post OP, just offering some Googled prices for perspective.

        • oh my bad. i found HN's original price now though so its updated.

  • Just wondering how this hub works with Ipad/Iphone?
You connect the iphone cable to the usb port at the top and then with the miniUSB cable you connect it to your device (ie Android) and it can read and transfer photos? Is this correct?

ye man, ok so im bad at explaining things, but I'll give it a go.

So you buy the Camera Connection Kit (below)

      for ipad 1-3
      http://store.apple.com/au/product/MC531ZM/A/apple-ipad-camer…

      ipad 4-5
      http://store.apple.com/au/product/MD821ZM/A/lightning-to-usb…

with iPhones and iPods, you can simply connect the USB cable to the camera adapter and it will transfer.

With mums Galaxy S3, the iPad says the phone draws too much power, so I'm going to use this as a bridge. the iPad cable will plus into the Hub (which will hopefully draw less power) and then the hub has its own USB connection which will plus into the camera kit.

So virtually, you need the iPad Camera kit + this hub.

      • Ok Thanks. I understand now.

        • I have a MacBook Pro and it only has 2 USB outputs, so either way, this will be handy

        • Here, I'm going to help you now, despite your slightly "smart" reply above.
          From a review:
"The male end of the USB plug is at a right angle to the USB cord, which means that it will block the USB port to the left of the one you're using. This is extremely frustrating on my MacBook, which as 2 USB ports side-by-side"

  • Let us know how you go with getting it to work with the iPad

    • so it worked, it reduced down to the point where the iPad read it, but then it said the Samasung Galaxy could not be read.

the other issue is that even if was readable, the images wouldn't come out, because the photos have to be exact 8 alphanumerically long. (aka IMG_0001).

so i just took out the micro usb, put it in to a card dongle and then into the belkin and it worked. its getting quite complicated, so i might just buy my mother a new iPhone or something.

  • really hard to get something nice in ACT. All of them will always be "no stock available in store". really jelly. need one for my new Surface Pro. :(

  • For anyone interested, this model has the wire coming out straight out the back, so does not block the port next to it, of course unless it is really close together. Hoop this helps
