Yeah, suppose to be an expensive destination, but can done in (OzBargain) style. ie Cheep as chicks.
Catch the $5 bus from city centre up to Remarkables car park. Too easy.
And some flights go direct to Queenstown airport (ZQN) to avoid shakey town.There is a Youth Hostel - right on the lake front if you're really keen.

You can go in the day before (try afternoon/evening) for fitting to save time on your first hire day. (They may let you take the gear out if the ski day is over - usually 3-4pm)
And if you want a rest day or have bad weather, they'll hold your gear till you return next, but I dont think they refund unused days - but you could try.
They're great on email, especially low season.Kids 10 & under ski free at Remarkables.
Ferg Burger is across the road and worth a visit.
Went last year to Queenstown (Coronet Peak) and it was great! The lines (at the time) were nowhere near as bad as Thredbo. Lots of nice views and places to stay in Queenstown. Combine this with a decent airfare and the hire savings may offset the flight cost :)
