I predict this fad not to take off. The reason 99% of photos are taken on a smartphone is because quality takes a back seat to convenience.

Who in their right mind would buy this camera which a) isn't anywhere near as convenient as having one smart device (ie your phone) and b) would have possibly the worst picture quality of any separate camera device?

if you are the type of person that carries around a smartphone plus a camera (presumably because your not happy with the quality of the photos that your smartphone produces) then why the hell would you buy this junk which has nowhere near the quality of a cheap DSLR?

Weird market segment their targeting in my opinion

    • Not only predict, but I hope to hell the fad dies a quick death.

    • Really? I would think that every point and shoot camera will have this functionality within the next 5 years.

All the reviews suggest it's a pretty decent camera, just at a higher price point that similar cameras that don't have the same functions, certainly far superior to any phone camera. Most people take photos and share them on the internet in some manner. This cuts out the part where you upload your photos to a computer, you do it right from the camera.

    • Who in their right mind thinks 16mp isn't good enough? We only just stopped using a 1.6mp Canon from 2002, yet the quality compared to the 12mp replacement is indistinguishable to these non-Liebovitzian eyes. Both crap on our older photos taken with film.

Its about market saturation.. and taking small risks to develop new markets. Remember, people thought the Phablet idea of the Galaxy Note 1 was ridiculous with a 5.3" screen. Now, there are up to 7" phablets with the median flagship size of around 5". This has obviously paid off for Samsung whilst Apple is left in the lurch with a tiny 4" screen on their latest model when the market has moved their demands for bigger screens so that users can see better with more screen Real Estate.

      • @bchliu - interesting theory. Like smart watches and Google Glass I suppose.

@COR80 - good quality photos have never been about megapixels. The lens is the most important and I guarantee this would not come close to a cheap DSLR (which if you were going to carry around two devices why not just go down the better path? Especially with wifi memory cards nowadays).

    • Weird market segment their targeting in my opinion

I don't know what you are talking about. Look at the specs - this fits neatly into the existing compact camera category. It is fits easily in your pocket - no comparison to a DSLR. It replaces your old pocket camera, and adds new features. Compact cameras are hardly a fad.

      • Compact camera sales are on a very steep downward slope. They have been ever since smartphones were released. Year on year more photos are taken on a smartphone compared to point & shoots.

While compact cameras weren't a fad per se, there is no doubt they are selling much less than they once were. This Samsung Galaxy camera is a new innovation in a falling market, whether or not the quality/technology is in this device or not is somewhat irrelevant because the niche is disappearing.

I'm sure some people will buy this / have a need for this, but it won't be many. An analogy would be releasing a new VCR player that can upload your movies via the internet.

  • Apparently this camera is an Androidified version of the Samsung WB850F, as it carries the same lens and sensor components. http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=5133&p…

  • I almost considered a second hand one for $300 so timing couldn't be better.

The phone model mentioned above is a little smaller and only 10x zoom ( and its a Kogan so if it fails its an expensive option to post it back)
I was impressed with the zoom in the store, I could zoom across the shop and read the small print on a DVD from about 6-7m away.
The quality of all the photos I took looked so much better than any phone camera i had played around with before , is Iphone 4S, S3 or Note2.
My wife was going to buy one as soon as it hit $350 again so this was a no brainier for me but hey it doesn't suit everyone's needs.
We'll definitely use this travelling O/S, shoot send and surf and make all my calls with skype so it suits us fine.
