  • The spec's look pretty damned good to me for that money.
I'd also like to hear opinions from those-more-in-the-know (ruraro et al).

  • yes its a great deal. acer is a very good brand.

    • i beg to differ. Acer is a budget brand, imo.
in asia, acer is one of the cheaper brands when it comes to laptops. most people own them because they are cheap. a good laptop would be from Asus.
nevertheless, for $800, you can't complain much.

      • No offense, I personally own a Asus laptop and it had been in the shop twice for repair (blown motherboard and broken power adapter). Good thing I had 2 years warranty from Asus otherwise I would have thrown it away. I bought a toshiba laptop after I finished using the Asus because the lcd cover cracked (I didn't drop it or anything. It just broke after 2.5 years of usage). Toshiba laptop has served me well for the last 13 months. As for Acer, they are mainly making value for money laptops. My brother has one and he loves it.

      • I have hardly ever gone wrong with Acer

  • +1

It's good value. In spite of the dedicated RAM, the graphics card isn't that great (about the equivalent of the cheapest desktop PCI-E card, the 8400GS).

But for $800 it's hard to go past.

Comparison to similarly priced 15.4" Lenovo G530 T3400 3GB 250GB deal for $829 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/13017 . Only 3GB of the 4GB in the Acer will be used unless have a 64-bit OS.

    HD3200 is just a fraction better than X4500: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark… , 3dmark06=1037, X4500=843. Neither is a 3D/gaming GPU.

    QL-64 cpumark is 1047, placing it lower than a T3400 at 1160, as shown http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+Athlon+X2… . This is confirmed at notebookcheck, QL-64 ranking 88 versus a T3400 at 62 at http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist…

Would be worthwhile evaluating them both in the flesh to determine which pleases overall at a similar pricepoint. Either the Acer or the Lenovo is certainly better than a dual-celeron Compaq CQ60 at lower $748 pricepoint.

On facevalue I'd go the Lenovo because it's CPU is faster, there's a whisker difference between their graphics, an Intel CPU will always have better resale and the G530 has been quite favorably reviewed on NBR http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5022&review… .

The Acer also has the advantage of Draft N wireless and Gigabit ethernet. And the larger HDD of course. HDMI out too.

Plus this has the handy option of picking up locally from Officeworks or JB whereas the Lenovo you'd have to get from Gocomp direct or pay for shipping.

Both good options methinks, depending on what you're after.

Yes.. very good points about HDMI, Draft-N and Gigabit ethernet. More connectivity options with the Acer. Both delivering a lot for the ~$800 pricepoint.

Quite unfortunate that it's end-of-financial year. Prices will probably hold until June 30, otherwise the strengthened AUD vs US means we should be seeing some great bargains. Like dual-celeron's CQ60 in low $600 mark. Whirlpoolers are importing netbooks with international warranty, eg: hi-def HP 2140/Samsungs from overseas cheaper than they are locally for that reason.

    • Thanks for that Ruraro. :)

    • +1

"benchmarks" and "faster" depends a lot on your particular load.
When it comes to virtualization (vmware/virtualbox/etc) the QL64 will eat the T3400 for breakfast.

For what I do, picking the Acer over the Lenovo is a no-brainer, YMMV.

Now I have to decide if a 20% increase in clock speed over my last laptop is worth $800 to me. :)

  • Great deal. Link not working though.

    • Link does work

      Great deal imo too

Good post. And great comments ruraro and tantryl, +1 for both of you!

    • I 2nd all your comments BOC14.
Thankyou to oziboi for sharing this deal with us all, and to ruraro & tantryl for your observations as requested.
On balance I think I'd go down the Acer/JB/OW path myself.
Now, to convince my better half of the need/bargain…
BTW, the link still works fine for me.

      Live Long and Prosper,
      Jean-Luc.

      • =]

  • good specs for the price, but not a fan of acer

  • u might want an additional battery

it has 3.5 hour charge time

    not the best :(

  • Thanks heaps for the heads up oziboi.

I can't seem to find the details of the $49 cashback offer??? Can you suggest a link?

Also at Officeworks there is an ACER with an intel T3400 for $958 (only a 250gig HDD) and a cashback of $99.

What do you say is better? AMD or Intel?

    Thanks

    Thanks teaearlgrey!
I am now the proud owner of the said Acer Aspire AS5536-643G25Mn QL64 :)

  • Can anyone comment on the performance of the HD 3200 GPU? I know it will run old games like starcraft/warcraft 3 adn diablo 2, but what about upcoming titles like sf4, diablo 3, and starcraft 2?

  • one of my friends tried to do the same as mentioned above, but Officeworks website refused to give it for 5% less!
I dont know how Officeworks can do that but they have done that saying there is no stocks at the JBHifi in the area where my friend is living and then he ordered it from JBHiFi website!!

  • Umm… hi folks! What's the difference between Acer AS5536-644G32MN (the model this thread is about) and Aspire AS5536G-64432Mn which seems to be above $1200 and has a cashback of $99?

NOTE: JB HIFI have a 10% off all laptops sale starting today including this one, until I believe Sunday. I saw this tonight at the Galleries store off Pitt St in Sydney! I don't think it's advertised but it's better than the officeworks 5% off and I'm going to try and see if officeworks will beat the 10% off price by calling the store? It's worth a try? Check out your local jb hi fi store first!

How much for? 10% means nothing if its off a listed price of $1000. So give us a price to put the 10% into a bit of a context/perspective.

  • +1

10% off the listed price above on same links.

check their website they now have the 10% officially listed as of today. So 10% off $972 = $883 + $99 cashback = $784.
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/laptops/

Officeworks may now beat this by 5% considering it is officially on their website? I haven't had time to go visit them yet.

    sorry maths was wrong: 874.80 - 99 = $775.80
