  I'm just starting out as well and I was looking for a cheap tripod too, but was wondering if this would be suitable for DSLR, or would you need something more sturdy?

    I just have a micro four thirds camera. I suggest you get something better if you have a DSLR. this only has a max capacity of 2.5kg so i wouldn't take a risk.

  Is the screw size universal for cameras? Will I be able to screw a point and shoot to it? A Powershot SX100 IS to be specific.

    In almost all cases, yes the size and threading is standardised. There are some exceptions for specialised cameras, but even these are relatively rare.

  In my experience a $20 tripod is a total utter waste of time. THe heads are crap, they wobble. The do the exact thing tripod are supposed not to.
