Nobody is making you fly them.

      • +10

I have no problem with Tiger Air, just Tigar Air.

        • +18

You'll have a bigger problem with San Fran if you think a domestic Tiger or Tigar Air sale is gonna get you there…

    • When flying with budget airline there are some risk of them rescheduling and everyone knows that. So if you are worried take other airline around and avoid budget airline. You pay for what you get.

    • +6

      Tiger Air to SFO

You need to keep off the Christmas booze. LOL

I think the only "tiger" that flew to SFO was Flying Tigers back in the Vietnam war days

EDIT - I think there must have been an edit just after you posted (Tigar - to Tiger) so your humour was lost…. Pity about the votes you got.

    • Nothing can be both 'cheap' and a 'rip off' when you're an OzBargainer. Nor does Tiger Air fly to San Fran.

For A to B, if you're flexible and not fussed about delays, food or legroom, it does the job fine.

    Limited Flight Dates: May-June
Should be in deal details. [Now added]

And return fares flying say OPs $26 SYD-GC are twice the price of any I found GC-SYD, so <vice versa> may not apply to price.

  • Why can't i get the $26 to gold coast??? It comes up as $42.

    • because of the scummers

  • +8

I would rather walk to Brisbane naked than ever use Tiger Airways again.

    • +1

loving it but i know you wouldnt

      • +1

Probably not ;). But I'd never use Tiger again.

        • +5

Flown probably 25 times with Tiger and never had a problem, none of my flights were changed either. Few were delayed 30mins to an hour which happens to all of them.

I think the problem is that a lot of people get on the bandwagon and hate on them, i'd say the ratio to customers to flights being delayed etc would be the same as any other company IMO.

    • Call up jetstar and get them to price match it then!!

  • +3

I got pretty excited - $1 return flights. Then reality hit.

  • +10

Love flying Tiger - great airline. Only people I've ever heard complain about them are people who turn up late and miss their flight.

Just wish they still flew into and out of Rockhampton …..

  • +1

first time i flied with them, they had their entire fleet grounded. Speaking of luck.

edit: $17 booking fee on top of the total fares applies.

    • Any way to get around the booking fees

      • +6

If you have one of the new Qantas frequent flyer cards which doubles as a Multi-currency mastercard, you can load this with some AUD and then pay for the tiger flights with it. This lets you take advantage of the $0 booking fees from tiger when using an Australian issued Mastercard Debit Card (saves something like $8 per leg).

And there are no fees or currency conversion losses with loading AUD and using as Mastercard Debit card.

        • +2

And you'll earn Qantas FF points on your purchase. ;)

    • +1

Sounds like you need to get a debit MasterCard.

  • Still not cheap enough to get me to fly Tiger again…

  • I just booked MEL-BNE return for $89 all inclusive. Previous best was $107 with Jetstar price match.

I saw $61 from MEL to Sunshine Coast return too but dates didn't work for me.

And given how often I have used Tiger I have been very happy with their service. Sure I'd rather go Virgin, but Tiger of Jetstar any day of the week.

    • +2

Same here. Flew a few times with them and so far all good. Never had a delay. Instead , we left 5 mins early a couple of flights which is even better. Don't mind the plank walk to and fro plane and Tiger staff are polite and friendly. Others may have had different experiences and don't want to travel tiger airways then that's your choice. More empty seats for us happy customers.

  • Which is the easiest flight search to find the cheapest flights?

    • also want to know this lol

    • I use adioso.

  • my last holiday was with tigers, flight was scheduled 1hr later. There was alot of notice and warning from tigers months before though. Not many other issues though.

    • Rescheduled **

  • +1

Just back from my Xmas trip with Tiger. No complaints about service. About 20 min delay in one direction due to slow luggage handlers, not their fault.

Only problem for me (and other tall people): seats are very close to each other. Will only fly Tiger again if the base fare is cheap enough to allow an upgrade to a premium seat without costing more than others.

Regarding people checking in late and being denied boarding: tough luck! I don't want to wait for them. Holding up a whole plane only because some people are cutting it fine is unfair to everyone else who makes an effort to be early.

Some family members were in that boat earlier this year - they had checked in and lost track of time in the airport pub. Tiger only charged them $50 each to get them on a flight the next day, which I find very reasonable.

    • -1

Failing to check in but being at the gate before boarding time would probably have minimal effect on the flight schedule assuming you do not have checked luggage (as is the case for most budget airlines).

We were several minutes late for check in, and as a consequence, watched our flight board much later although we were waiting at the same gate for the flight after. This makes anyone think of their money making vs service operations.

Whether or not they like it, this type of service hurts their image. Nothing again budget airlines; operators like Ryanair or EasyJet do a much better job than TigerAir.

  • Just went to book from Perth to Melbourne and it worked out to well over $223.95 with 20kg bag each way. Way to many extras! $16 booking fee, $6 seat fee (each way!)

    • +1

Still cheaper than every other airline and you had the choice to include all the extras if you didn't need them and get it for an even lower price.

  • Where do these prices come from? I search within the parameters and it comes to twice the price….

    (Perth to Sydney) $149.95

    • +1

Looks like PER-SYD vv for $75 is sold out. The cheapest dates appear to be $139. Try using skyscanner.net to search the fares as it's a lot quicker than the tigerair website.

  • Melbourne (MEL) <vice versa> Sydney (SYD) $29

All i can find is $57.95 flights. where are the $29 ones??

    • +1

I think the OP added the $1 to the lowest price airfare and halved it to show the per sector average.

Dont forget if they cancel a flight and offer the refund it wont be very much!!

      • +3

If they cancel a flight you would still be put on the next available flight as an alternative to a refund.

        • yes but with Tiger quite often the next flight is the next day (expect for mel-syd)

    • None left :(

  • O what a feeling

  • $137 return from Melbourne to Cairns. Not too bad.

  • is tiger airways that bad? $112 Sydney to Gold coast. Anyone got any stories about this airline? lol

    • It's all in the numbers…(everyone's got stories but anecdotal evidence is beaten by statistics every time)

      http://www.bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month.aspx

From what I can see Tiger are outperforming Jetstar in pretty much every category, which also lines up with my actual experience of them both.

      • +1

locutus_of_bris, it is all in the numbers - all the numbers! (In this case, not the ones you chose to present.)

Those stats only give 2 main parameters ON-TIME (departures & arrivals - which are correlated) plus CANCELLED (percent of flights). A long or short delay in a flight counts equally. Ask any traveller & they will tell you the flaw in that :-)

Really needs statistics of delay (mean & sd etc) to be meaningful. A 5 minute delay is hardly noticeable, but a 5 hour delay can ruin a trip. How long & often are those long delays (sd, outliers, etc)?

Would you rather fly on an airline with a lot of 5 minute delays (poor ON-TIME stats) or one with few but 5 hour delays (good ON-TIME stats)? I think most anecdotal complaints would be about the latter.

Of course 1 delay rolls onto more delays when airline has more flights.
(Jetstar has 4 times that of Tiger & operates more flights at peak times when slots are all allocated. It is easier to be on time if you do not compete for slots - as shown by the best ON-TIME winners.)

You seem to have only chosen 1 month of data from the summary to sing the praise if Tiger.

If you read the November full report (1 year) http://www.bitre.gov.au/publications/ongoing/files/BITRE_OTP…, Table 2 shows from June to October Tiger was the worst ON-TIME(departures) performer, improving only in November. Similar stories from Table 3 ON-TIME(arrivals) & Tiger peaked in CANCELLATIONs in Table 4.

Nice choice of stats. November would be the only month to use this year to promote TIGER! [Your application for a job at Tiger Marketing has been submitted.]

I wouldn't be so critical of anecdotal evidence, which reflects quite understandable subjective bias.
[eg If I am delayed for a long time on an unimportant journey it is not as bad as a shorter delay on an important one. Also it depends if the airline keeps me informed & the delay was an unavoidable, against one due to their own error. Those stats count both delays as being equal.]

        • +1

I put up the most recent month because it's the most recent month and that's where the website dropped me when I googled it. Everyone is welcome to go and research more of them. I have checked at other times and have found the same ranking of airlines. I'm sure you will find individual months that show other rankings, I can only go from the times and months I have seen.

The stats equate well to my experience. I've flown both airlines about equally. I have been flat cancelled by jetstar twice and rerouted internationally with no reason or compensation. At worst tiger have delayed my by a maximum of 30 minutes.

So yes, I do prefer to fly with the airline that has the better on time stats, as it has proven out in my experience to be worth it, not to mention routinely cheaper. Yes I could try and price match but that isn't always an option due to the criteria, though I have used it successfully in the past.

I am not "singing their praises", merely showing people where they can find data and relating my experience. Everyone can make up their own mind. Most people I know who fly budget airlines and have tried tiger would pick tiger over jetstar if comparing budget airlines. Most would also prefer to fly virgin, but you that's another price bracket.

I will be critical of anecdotal evidence when used on a one off basis and while excluding actual statistical data. People who have had "1 bad experience" and swear they will never use them again are likely to have the same experience sooner with jetstar, but only time will tell for them. Again it's up to them who they want to fly with, I'm merely stating where data can be found and also my own opinion.

Ultimately I don't care who anyone flies with, but there is data out there to show that tiger isn't as bad as a lot of the anecdotal evidence would try to have us believe.

In short - what I am trying to say is:
There is data out there, go look at it and make up your own mind.
Yes I believe this sale represent very good value on an airline that I fly with regularly.
Those who will "never fly with them again", if they kept up that line of reasoning every time each airline did something like cancel a flight, would soon find themselves driving quite a bit as there just aren't that many airlines here.

        • +1

I'm sure you will find individual months that show other rankings, I can only go from the times and months I have seen.

Umm… impartiality reading the data, Tiger has been worst for ON-TIME (departures & arrivals) for 5 out the last 6 months of data. CANCELLED flights were so much above any other airline for 2 of those months - double Jetstar.

Trends are important in statistics. Trends are better predictors of future outcomes than one set of stats.

There was a mixed picture in the first half of 2013, with no great difference between airlines on those stats. Tiger was the standout poorest performer in the second half of 2013.

Selectively choosing stats to present to make your point… very dodgie.

As you presented the stats as evidence… As a remedy for biased (anecdotal) views based on limited experience…
          Read the (full) stats!

[I am a discount airline junkie (with a degree in stats & carry-on bag). But I've never had the opportunity to fly with Tiger (limited destinations from Brissie). I have no view on them, but going by these stats (and valid anecdotal stories), I don't think I will unless they lift their game.]

        • yawn - I've made my point and so have you. Well done.

        • +1

Those who will "never fly with them again", if they kept up that line of reasoning every time each airline did something like cancel a flight, would soon find themselves driving quite a bit as there just aren't that many airlines here.

You realise that's just hyperbole in a moment of anger, not reason, just like people in a quarrel saying I'm not speaking to you any more. But it does indicate dissatisfaction.

I once lodged a complaint about Tiger with consumer affairs VIC not over flight performance but over their failure to disclose a component of excess baggage charge levied by the handling agents. (It was under the recovery threshold, and I didn't expect any action, just to register my dissatisfaction.) I wouldn't go so far as to say I will never fly with them again, but I would be wary. Especially if they only flew once or twice a day to a particular destination, then the risk of the cancellation becoming an overnight delay increases.

        • Thanks, locutus_of_bris ;-)

    • i booked Mel to GC for $77 which cheaper than SYD to GC. How does it works lol
