Well shit, I just bought it for $98 at JB Hi-Fi after price matching it with HN.

    • i got mine for $47 Delivered when COTD had their birthday sale

      • +2

You were lucky EC. However, as we all know, COTD birthday deal was very limited.

        • +10

COTD WAS A CON OF THE DAY

      • +4

Pretty low to neg someone that got a bargain…

    • Buy this one and take it back to JB for a refund

      • +18

Or just enjoy the product and try to forget about it

        • +1

I bought one for my mother yesterday for $107 form JB. I knew I should of gone to GG's.

        • It's not for me, present for my brother.

Hasn't been opened, but already wrapped. ><

        • +2

doesn't matter if it's wrapped. buy one from big w and return it to jb using jb receipt.

keep your receipts. buy and return items using before xmas receipts at the after xmas sales.

    • +1

If I wanted, would have bought one for $60 delivered from The Good Guys using $40 voucher. But nah, happy with the wdtv live.

  • +1

    Great find WNK. Thanks!

do i want this?? if Im an android girl?

    • +1

Minix Geo X7 is your answer girl. Just bought one recently, XMBC seem to be working fine

      • that looks like a fine product. may I ask where you purchased yours?

        • I bought from ebay, the guy located in Melbourne-Footscray, so I went to pick up there. Pm if you want to ask anything.

  • Is there a new version coming out anytime soon?

  • Not hackable for XBMC the latest models, right? :(

    • Still not hacked? Damn . I know theres that plex thing but I want a full hack.

      • Unless this is for a dummy user, I can't condone this purchase even at $71. XBMC is king. Why can't there be a sub $120 XBMC device which works really well?

        • +5

Rasberry Pi works well, overclock it and it can even software decode DTS. You can get the unit only for about $40

        • Too ugly…..Sigh!

        • +3

@RockyRaccoon: I negged you for unnecessarily labeling people (you brought the trash talk to this thread) - no one asked about android here.
Their posts were useful for me - I wouldn't buy this device without being able to install something like XBMC so it fits my purpose.

        • +4

What the Mod: Foul Language does this have to do with Android? This is to do with XBMC, not "fandroid" in any way. This has to do with being the best media playback solution (by far, XBMC).

Proprietary, unhackable ATV 3.0 is no good to XBMC users and I'd argue, no good to most people, a modern WDTV might even be more useful,…
I couldn't care less about Android in my loungeroom, just XBMC.

  • +3

What's the main reason people use these for?

    • +2

I too would like to know seeing they can't stream avi, mkv, mp4 etc

      • +1

I only use mine for NBA TV and beaming music to my TV :)

        • +5

So if you have a PS3/4 or a Smart TV then there is not point?

        • +1

          correct twisty

        • The only ppl who will find apple tv fantastic is if you already have the other apple devices… atv by itself is pretty limited.

        • Airplay, mirror your other ios device on bigscreen.

      • +3

Mostly USA content (iTunes, Netflix etc) via a DNS proxy.

Yeah, it's not for everyone, but in my case it's dead easy to AirPlay avi, mkv, mp4 etc video files stored on my Mac, using Air Video Server (converting video formats on the fly, on the Mac) and the matching Air Video client app (on an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch).

(To clarify: Air Video on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch communicates with the AppleTV via AirPlay, so any video that shows up on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch can just as easily be played on the TV)

      • +3

Pretty much airplay anything and everything from my phone macbook ipad to my tv. Also have a wdtv for all the other stuff but its less pretty than apple tv.

      • Actually you can use an app called air video. they r great, streaming and convert file at the same time.

    • +3
      • Renting/buying movies/tv shows from the iTunes store.
      • Airplay Streaming of video content from iPads/iPhones
      • Using the various video apps available (a handful, some are free, some have subscriptions - see here: http://www.apple.com/au/appletv/whats-on/)
      • +3

thanks. then still pass. i use roku to watch youtube and netflix. it is doing fine.

    • the main reason is to spend more money on quickflix, itunes movies and other subscriptions. I am not sure whether it can play ripped movies from external drive or via other DLNA devices.

      • It can if you either get those into you itunes library and play from your PC via that source or use iphone / iPad to mirror/airplay a media player program on that device to the appleTV eg Plex is awsome.

    • netflix, hulu etc

The only downside is that it cant be jailbroken. Otherwise great product

      • -1

An iOS7 jailbreak on iPhone5C was announced yesterday - ATV3 can't be far behind.

        • +2

          ATV uses different protection

        • +2

Not really, the main problem is that all JBs going back to the iPhone 4S have been userland (as opposed to an exploit in the bootrom or similar) and the atv has practically no userland to attempt to exploit.

      • I use mine for Netflix and Hulu, also have a Roku.

Prefer the ATV as the interface is superior to the Roku.

    • +3

I use it to Airplay from Plex. My iPhone / IPad becomes a cool remote that shows detailed movie and show info, and when I want to play something I simply airplay it to the TV. I have one in each room and can easily Airplay to any TV - for example when I am tired and want to continue watching a movie in bed, simply airplay to the bedroom and resume watching. Plex takes care of the media formats and media information.

      • Agree. I have my Plex server set up at my home and when I visit my sister, I can log into my Plex library and mirror my TV shows and Movies to her TV. I will note though that her Samsung TV needs to get connected to the ethernet at some stage (currently it is not as the router is upstairs and they all use wireless) and just install the Plex SmartTV app and completely avoid needing the Apple TV. :-)

        Regards
        Daniel

    • +2

airplay! that's enough for many people

    • I use mine for easy access to Netflix US and NBA subscriptions (need unblockus for $5 a month) but works a treat. Also streaming media content from my mac.

  • Did the product page just disappear?

    • sold out online it seems

    • I can see the page but click and collect is not an option which means I can't use the coupon to get $10 off. Anyone else have any luck?

Edit: and I just saw the edit from WNK. Thanks

  • http://buyersguide.macrumors.com telling me not to buy

    • I guess they may be releasing an updated version/model or something. I bought one for $100 or so a while ago and I love it. Netflix and Hulu on my TV. Definitely worth every penny I paid for mine.

  • Make sure your internet connection is fast enough to play HD contents. Otherwise it keeps buffering

  • Can you piut XMBC on this? Is this Apple TV1 or 3?

    • no xbmc.

  • +2

Plexconnect is brilliant for accessing my plex media server on Apple TV

  • damn.. always miss it.

  • one of the most regretting product i ever bought is this box!

    • -4

I sold it straightaway after receiving it as a gift. Android TV box is much much better.

    • I absolutely love mine. Netflix and Hulu, wife can screen share her Apple devices straight to it. Does everything I need.

  • Can we still get it for $71 in store?

  • +1

Every tv should come with one of these box… airplay is the best thing ever.

    • +1

If it weren't for Airplay, i wouldn't consider this product (would assume others are the same).
However, $71 to airplay from my devices to my DAC is entirely worth it. Lossless for audio too via LPCM at 44.1/16 and the auto re-sampling hasn't caused any audio artefacts. Great devices and seamless for audio.

  • Can we still get it for $71 in store?

    • In-store it is $81 and please check the stocks in your local store.

  • the code no longer works and so is 'check out'(store collect)…..

  • So lucky got one.

  • All the iPads appear to be 1c off! woohoo save $0.01 (big red "save" sign)

    • +1

It's because they come with an iTunes card, so instore they scan the iPad at 1cent off, then charge 1cent for the gift card.

  • +1

Store manager in Tamworth, NSW said in-store price is only valid from Boxing Day :-(

    • Yeah it does say in store starts from 26 Dec. Bugger that I missed out this one. Don't think I'll queue for this tv on Boxing Day.

  • What's the difference between Apple TV and WD Live TV?

    • +1

If you have a lot of Apple products then you probably want the Apple TV.

WD Live TV is generally better, but Apple TV plays very well with the Apple ecosystem as one would expect.

      • Can you install Netflix on WD Live TV? I heard that you cant do it on the ones made in Australia

        • +1

Yes, you can - even on Australian models. You just need a vpn.

        • +1

Thanks. Office works have it for $99. I'm thinking about getting that then.
Dont really have any apple product except for ipad.

        • Easier method is to just set the region and do a factory reset. Worked for me and I use it for Netflix and Hulu now. Though the Xbox One is much better and faster for using Netflix. WD TV Live sometimes needs to buffer, and menus are a lot slower. Would be great if it did not run so hot and was faster.

      • They are kind of different… wdtv is for playing every video format out there whilst apple tv adds to your existing apple devices. Wouldn't say wdtv is "generally" better

  • I haven't had time to research this yet.

I still use the original Apple TV on which I can store and play downloaded non-Apple (legal of course) videos.
The whole family want to use it so I'd like to buy a second one to do this with but I suspect I can't do this on the new ones - I'm wondering what the plusses are for the latest Apple TV or whether to get another Mk1 or something else. We have Apple desktops, iPhones and iPads and a mix of notebooks.

I guess @Sturmeh, you have half answered my question while I was writing this. Thanks.

    • +1

ATV 2nd gen and 3rd gen can't store content; they have minimal flash memory. You can stream to it with Airplay and play anything off your phone, laptop, etc. Or you can use it to stream limited content direct from the net.

My 1st gen died a slow, painful, pixelated and artefact riddled death sans IR input. The thing I miss most is the RCA audio out. The new ones only have HDMI.

  • great deal

  • +2

    Good deal! Love my Appletv

Install Plex on your iPhone/iPad and stream any files (eg mkv, mp3, flacs) to your hifi and TV from your hard disk.

  • +1

On a related note, Apple retail (and online I think) will match the price offered by any authorised Australian reseller- potentially more convinient than a trip to Big W.

  • Anyone successfully got Apple to price match Big W even if they are showing check store for stock like at the moment?

Edit: nvm it's only avaiable from 26/12

  • Everyone knows this is a price error, right? The catalog says 25% off, excluding Apple branded products, but the website shows Apple cables, adaptors, AppleTVs, Smart Covers, etc all discounted.

Big W are generally good with this kind of thing (like the double 50% off blu-ray sale) and will likely honour pricing.

I picked up two 30pin to Lightning adaptors for $41, when Apple sells them for $39 each :D

  • I can confirm a price match at the apple store at Bondi.

    No questions asked.

    I got 2

    • +3

      71 or 81?

      • Depends on what the Web site shows at the time he purchased them.
Apple Stores generally price match big / major retail stores (BigW, Target, DSE, JB).
You probably can only get Apple to price match $81 now.

      • 81

  • Think I'd prefer waiting for the 802.11ac model, when you're streaming HD content it'll be much more futureproof

  • if i'm not a die hard apple fan, would the chromecast be cheaper/do the same thing?

    • yeah, chromecast can do. I just bought Roku 3 from amazon. waiting for delivery

    • If you use enough Android devices, yep.

  • Karingal VIC showing as in stock, but alas it is not, all sold out :(

  • Hi, just bought 2 of them at JB at Highpoint(heaps of them on the shelf) just showed the guy the ozbargain post on my phone, he matched Big W's store only
    special for $81 each !

  • Priced Matched at JB HI FI Penrith at $81 each. Got 2. Thanks OP.

(went to the apple store in penrith first, said the best they could do was $90, so stuff that lol)

  • JB at Macquarie Centre & Chatswood Chase refused to price match saying Big W online doesn't have stock anyway.
Myer at Macquarie Centre refused to price match for the same reason as above & said that $81 was below cost & they could only reduce it by 10% of the $108 RRP.
Apple store at Chatswood Chase refused to price match saying the most they can reduce is by 10% of $108 RRP.
Thought I'd try my luck one last time & went to David Jones at Chatswood Chase & the guy there checked Big W website & price matched. I bought two.
