Will it do its own compression for you?
no compression with this software you need to get their Aiseesoft Blu-ray to MKV Ripper to get compression
Once it is ripped to mkv, there are lots of programs that will compress it.
I much prefer a real backup. I can tell the difference between a 50 GB blu-ray rip and a 8GB re-compression of that rip on a decent quality screen at 50 inches or higher, depending on the film.
2TB HDDs are less than $100 these days - that's 40 x 50GB blu-rays (most are smaller, though, probably close to 60 discs). Cheaper than re-buying them if they're damaged, and generally better quality than torrents (that have enough seeds to actually finish).
I got this app last time and use it.
Until we have reasonably-priced blu-ray quality movie downloads (not just "HD" that looks worse than DVDs due to over-compression) this is a good option for decent home cinema.
virtualdub. free. forever.
dvdfab. free. forever.
can you please point me to the free dvdfab for blurays? (not shareware that expire after 30 days). Thanks.
Think I'll stick with MakeMKV. It does the same thing, is free while in beta and is available for Windows, linux and OS X.
I got it for accessing/decrypting AACS encrypted blu-ray disc and does that fine for free.
Will it do its own compression for you? i.e. can you turn a 50GB BD into a 8GB MKV?
I don't know how viable it is to back up (that's the main purpose they're selling it for) your entire entire BD collection into 50GB MKVs. You'll quickly run out of space.
