First post, saw an old friend today with next weeks Big W catalogue. They have the PS3 160GB console on clearance for $148 as well as the Nintendo Wii for half price ($74) which comes with Mario Kart Wii. PLUS I will add that they have Assassins Creed Black Flag for Xbox 360 and PS3 for $58.
Is this the ps3 that can be reflashed ?
prob not, it is most likely new stock which never had a FW of that low.
Only PS3s which have previously had a FW of that low can be reflashed down to that low if i remember correctly.
I bought one… PS3 slim V4.11 stock. Max downgrade version is V3.60. Therefore, you won't be able to put CFW on it. Cobra ODE/Matrix ODE/X3K3 ODE WILL work.
I personally ordered a Cobra last night. X3K3 is by Chinese developers and support forum isn't as active as Cobras'. Matrix ODE will be great once its released (currently delivering to stockists). They are developed by the same team that released Matrix PS2 modchip.
Not sure if it works for this model, you probably need to search for 'Cobra Ode'

AC:BF for $58? HOW?
The reason its $58 is because the next generation of games are coming out now its a usual when the transitions start to happen. Even from today Batman Arkham Origins is $58 plus you get the deathstroke add-on too. you would pay $98 at EB Games for that.
Or they sell it under cost because they don't make much money if any in the game/game console section, rather then take a lose on it and make a profit on other sections of the store.
You know, what they have done for the past several years, now the prices are just creeping down lower which is great for consumers.

Wow ps3's are 148? Hard to accept since ps3 were around 300+ in 2012. So much power packed in one machine. Imagine one day getting a ps3 for 50. Won't be long .

There were quite a few sales mid last year in the $200s, plenty of stock at those sales.
Not really a great price, I bought a few for friends back last year for $160ish from Dick Smith. The 320GB were about $220 at the time.

I remember selling mine for around $300 with 2 games but mine was a 320gb, What I mean was the power in compact was it has blu-ray feature. Those are some good prices from 2012 though. I really like the ps3 price though but the huge in price drop was inevitable with the successor of the ps3. Its funny to think the ps3 will be used just to watch movies for some and will be pretty much disposable.
PS3 were retailed for $800-900 when it first came out. Sorry did I scare you?

I did It states clearly that the event starts in 13 days from now so please read carefully. As for store as other people mention it looks like NSW only but i can't be too sure as each state usually has adifferent catalogue.

No, don't assume everyone will have stock. Several times I have not been able to find $30 Telstra starter SIMs even though they had been advertised in the catalogue

cheapest might be to just get ps3 version ($58), and then pay the $15 upgrade fee for the ps4 version. Grand total of $73.

Given it's the old PS3 that's referenced I'd imagine that it's likely to be a clearance. No doubt they'll keep selling the newer super-slim PS3's though. The same for the Wii, I'm sure they're happy to be able to shift any stock they have remaining.
Yeah PS2's were selling for years after they released PS3. I wouldn't mind getting one eventually at this price (or lower) just to play some of the exclusives, so I hope they don't stop making/supporting them too early…
What's better this model or super slim? Or is the fatty best? I bought a broken fatty that just needs the bluray drive replaced but thinking off just keeping as a media center.
Since it has a 160GB drive in it it has the hdd bracket in it unlike the 12gb right?
The consensus seems to be this model is better than the super slim - a superior build quality along with a slot-load drive rather than having to lift the lid to put a disc in.
Well I was looking at getting one of these so I guess this will be the model then.
If you can avoid the 12gb do so, it's a gross little thing. The regular slim is a superior unit.

if the fatty has a low enough firmware (<3.55) then flash that sucker with custom firmware and you can play games off USB (or internal) HDD without needing the bluray drive active.
also I think you can pay someone to downgrade the firmware if it is newer than 3.55

All models have a different "min" firmware. Therefore not all models can go down to 3.55.
I doubt the one that BigW can go down to 3.55
Yeah I had a look at the modding scene for the ps3 when I picked it up, got it for a steal too at 20$ was able to get a confirmation that video showed on screen and the bluray wouldn't read. After looking at cfws for it decided really the only reason I cfw is so I can play other regions games and emus and since ps3 is mostly region free it wasn't worth the trouble.
Gotta say though cfw firmware with emus on it was the best portable console ever.

As someone who went through the fat, slim and now have a super-slim (they all broke eventually, thank god for cloud saving) here are some notes: The fat literally looks like it cost 4 times as much as the others, had 4 USB slots and (my model) played PS2 games. The slim is easily the quietest. The super-slim is horrible in most respects but does the job.
If they're offering slims here, grab one. If I lived in NSW I'd pay $148 just to swap my super-slim over.

because its in the catalogue they will have stock specifically sent to them for this advertisement aswell maybe other stores might have some left over to clear out. As a previous manager for big w I know that when this type of thing happens they may have found a few pallets worth of stock in their warehouse. SO to get rid of the stock they are marking them down and sending them to stores

HI there, Just so your aware I used to work at Big W for 7 years as a manager. I know for a fact Big W receives their catalogues a week in advanced for ordering purposes on particular lines. I will be editing the dates though as the catalogue states its for October 31st to November 13th.

I went and checked out a few local BigW stores and none have this in stock.
One store seemed to have been asked a few times already as she knew all about the clearance.
If you find stock, just ask them if they'll sell it to you for $148. Most managers will realise it's old stock and will sell it cheap to get rid of it.
Stock guy asked his manager said they couldn't. Asked if I could layby cancel then purchase at sale cost. got him to call layby and confirm it wouldn't be an issue and it wasn't. Only have to pay a two dollar layby fee. The layby receipt has some scary legalese saying "a cancellation fee of or the value of the payments made which ever is the lesser may be deducted" and "the two dollar service fee is forfeited." But she said that fee had never come up on all the time she's done them. Got her to cross off and sign that scary part so I wouldn't be worried about it. Only ps3 they had there too! Yay $150 slim ps3!

problem for me is Huge boot sales have ruined used price expectations for me. I bought a ton of AAA ps2 titles for 1$ each and gotten Red Dead Redemption for $5 before I even knew about this deal just knew I was getting one eventually lol. Some of the pricing at Cashconverters isn't to horrible either as long as you don't mind peeling off some stickers.

Yes, the PS3 can play PS1 games. However, this model can't run PS2 games, only the PS2 classics on PSN I believe.
Software mods are only available for PS3's that run on 3.55 OFW or lower.
For 'modchips' you'll want to search up about Cobra ODE.

You could try but stock is so limited if you can find one today you should layby and then cancel the layby eat the two dollar fee and then buy it at sale price when it goes on sale at least then you're guaranteed. Any way best of luck to you. Also I don't think I've been able to click and collect anything that's been clearenced before but that could be because they've never had stock on it dunno.

I just called my local watergardens store in Vic. Was told by some rude Lady that they won't hold or do lay by on this product. I said that the sale says online only but I can't purchase online to which she said the online store is completely different company and she don't know anything about that.
