Qantas Clubs are a zoo nowadays (particularly at feeding time); the fact that people actually pay for membership completely baffles me. People who fly enough to actually get some value out of the lounges surely would get access for free through their frequent flyer status (QFF Gold and above, Emirates Gold and above, OneWorld Sapphire and above); those without status probably don't fly enough to make the membership cost worthwhile, particularly when there are generally better food and beverage options elsewhere.
If you're only in discount economy, you need to do a LOT of flying to hit even gold - assuming 20 SCs per round trip, it's 35 flights a year to make gold.
If you spend, say, $25 per round-trip in the airport for a coffee/beer and a snack (not hard to do), you're at nearly $900, so half that on a Qantas Pub membership isn't too bad.
(Plus there are other benefits like the shorter check-in line, which are hard to put a $ value on.)
The shorter check in doesn't work if everyone is gold member and FIFO :p
so its around 230 for a year.
what is the benefits of buying this?
It's $470/year, which represents a 45% discount off their normal prices.
It's not $470/year, that also includes their joining fee (which you don't pay every year).
Yup, that's correct; I should've said that this is $470 for the first year only. :)
As electronicmato pointed out, if you are an infrequent traveller (ie, haven't earned enough status points to get the Club benefits for free) then you are probably better using the money to buy food from the airport shops if you need to kill time between flights. Spag bol in a fancy bowl with a fancy name in the domestic Qantas Club is still spag bol. My favourite offering from the Club is bread and butter pudding (which gives you an idea of the best on offer).
If you are an alcoholic you will get more value from buying Club membership but they probably won't let you on the plane afterwards ;-)
Agree with daydream. You can always take a partner/friend in, so like $235 each, but I'd think you would have to make at least four trips before seeing it as a valuable option. And yes, the food isn't great, but enjoy the drinks! :)
I think it's:
- access to a large lounge area with comfortable seating
- not as noisy as out in the rest of the airport
- food at a buffet bar around the major meal times (but just a few small nibbles, cheese slices, sandwhiches, little pies)
- some free beverages
- possibly free alcoholic beverages at certain times
- access to computers and internet (may be restricted to business class; I forget)
- newspaper and magazine library
- nicer toilets
- depending which lounge, there may be showers and you can have one shower during your visit
Food and drink provided vary by lounge (domestic tends to be less generous than international).
I think you can bring along 1 - 2 guests for free, each visit, as well (see documentation as I haven't checked in ages)
NB You can only use the club while you are waiting for a QANTAS flight (I think also Jetstar is okay too)
This can become extremely limiting on the value you get, especially if QANTAS is not offering the best prices for your flight
Would have probably picked this up earlier in the year, however after my next two trips this month I will hit gold so don't really need to worry about it for this year.
Although they are really busy thesedays those times I get to tag along to the lounge with somebody else it is certainly much nicer than hanging around the airport.
Pick it up now and then qualify gold, your membership will be "suspended" and resume once your status falls back below gold. Who know how much the cost of membership will go up next year…
Apparently QF lounges are full of bogans these days anyway
maybe if you're in Tamworth or something… SYD/MEL/BNE/PER lounges are pretty diverse. I use the business lounges (domestic) as my Platinum status affords me that privilege, but just to give you a rough indication of the quality of the lounge and value you may get out of it — I honestly prefer a sandwich and coffee from a cafe.
I see no reason to purchase a QC membership… Like others have mentioned, if you fly enough you should have elite status anyways. Just my 2c.
If you purchase a Qantas Club membership and subsequently fly enough to obtain gold status during the year of your Qantas Club membership, you will be upgraded to Gold which gives you free Qantas Club access. When you eventually lose your gold status Qantas will send you a new Qantas Club membership for an entire year since you already paid for it :). So you don't end up wasting your membership fees - happened to me after I obtained gold after about 2-3 weeks of having a paid Qantas Club membership.
used to be able to pay for a life membership some 20 years ago for around $5000, much more worth it…
Really? Qantas being more expensive, you're always losing money if you fly with them.
Seems like a $5000 smack in the face.
I think in those days we had very little competition among the airlines.
Also, QANTAS had a reputation for safety and a lower frequency of incidents.
yes lifetime memberships were such good value that qantas stopped selling them a few years ago :(
Wasn't that long ago. QP life memberships stopped being offered in the early 2000s.
People weren't sure how long Qantas was going to be around for then (or now) so a gamble ;-)
don't forget prioritypass is cheaper and more useful overseas :)

I thought priority pass only lets you stay in the lounge for a short while?
There are time limits (mabey 3-4hrs?) in some of the lounges but I have never experienced the effect of this in my travels across Mid-East, Europe, and Sth America. Only problem is that some lounges dont open up the booze until the evenings.
Like others have said, if you don't fly enough to qualify for free membership then it's probably not worth it.
Personally, I try to avoid spending excess time at the airport so if I have to go to a lounge then that's usually poor planning. The only time I fly Qantas is domestic, and I try to only have carry on luggage, so you can practically just rock up to the airport 20 minutes before your flight and still be fine.
With common routes like Melb/Syd there are flights almost every 30 minutes, which again limits the amount of time you need to spend in the airport as Qantas will usually let you jump on if there's room.
Lots of people buy this!
