most 1st world and developing countries have direct trains and tubes from airport to city…… we have been WIP for the longest time ever..

    • +5

The Govt is trying to solve it thankfully. Started with Dan Andrews.
Lots of opposition to it still by the richer inner eastern suburbs peeps who drive/bike to work and don't care about spending $ on uber/taxi to the airport.
Very frustrating as they are quite vocal: "Spending tax money on trains no one wanted" .., yeah right.

      • +1

The least the govt can do is to run a frequent, express bus line (with dedicated bus lanes etc.) to Broadmeadows station, and have that station made secure at all hours with protective officers. It would also help airport workers, many of whom are on low incomes. The 901 drives all the way to Frankston, and isn't designed for travellers to/from the airport.

And Myki has to be made more friendly for foreign visitors, right now you cannot top up Myki with an overseas credit card (it previously could but abandoned due to fruad) either with the machine or the app, and you have to top up at a 7-11 or other retailer.

    • As of last year I completely agree

      • this is how backwards we have become until its own citizen thinks its ok.

with inflation it will only increase in price.

had thy done it 20 30 years ago.. it would hv been much cheaper..

      • +2

Bus is always not on time. Delay can be 10 - 20 min. Thanks to the amount of cars on the road. Train at least runs on its own track and cam carry more people.

      • Sydney will have trains to both of it's airports and Melbourne years away from just one

    • Wrong, Auckland NZ has no airport rail.

      • It does have 2 dedicated airport bus lines, with buses equipped with luggage racks taking you to either Onehunga or Puhinui station in South Auckland, with dedicated bus lanes for most of their routes. Compare that to the 901 bus which is IMO too unreliable, as that bus can take you all the way to Frankston, and isn't designed for airport users.

And unlike Auckland, Melbourne's trains are actually reliable.

        • I see. Btw how come you're on Ozbargain if you're in NZ?

      • Yes and Auckland has 1/5th the population of Melbourne it does not make sense to build a train to the airport for their population.

As an aside Auckland is also notorious for having worse traffic than Sydney or Melbourne and are considering a congestion charge, so it's probably not a good comparison for transport infrastructure.

        • But using that logic, that their population is 1/5th of ours, how does it make sense to build ANY kind of train line in Auckland if only 1/5th the number of people are going to use it? How does it make sense to build a motorway in Auckland if only 1/5th the number of cars would use it?

Much easier and cheaper to just park at the airport in long term parking

    • well, a slightly better rip off compared to this.

      • +1

Not if there's 5 people travelling

        • +1

I won't call $14 per day parking at that remote place "cheap"

        • Surely that depends how long the trip is too

    • +4

How does that work when my car is in my garage in Brisbane?

    • It costs me $10 to get to southern cross from regional Vic which would otherwise be a 4 hour drive. The skybus + Vline is cheaper than even the fuel costs, let alone parking.

    • +3

      ONLY for the airport???

infrastructure is something you can't simply count on numbers, especially on ROI….

      think of healthcare.

    • +4

      No lol.

Trainline is far more convenient and efficient. You want to be putting less cars and buses on the roads and more trains.

Need to go to Japan to see how freaking amazing a proper railway system makes life.

    • Long term The idea is to connect the airport from two directions and possibly have a mini loop for the suburbs.

The airport is just an easier popular place to start. Eventually Broadmeadows would be connected to it and allow some level of movement between the west and north without having to go into the city.

Personally not sold on the idea but that was the plan

Traffic.. all it takes is one accident..

    • Anyone else think ….

Looks like only you are of that opinion.

Or $9 (excluding the $6 for a new Myki if you don’t have one) if you do this:

    1. Bus to Broadmeadows Station: From Melbourne Airport, jump on the Route 901 bus to Broadmeadows Railway Station. The bus costs about $3.76 if you’ve got your Myki card handy.

    2. Train to Southern Cross Station: At Broadmeadows Station, hop on the train to Southern Cross. Your Myki covers this part, costing you about $5.30 for a one-way trip in Zone 1/2.

    • Can I buy a myki card at the airport?

      • +5

if you have an android phone you can get a free one in Google Wallet

        • I'm still confused why conduent systems haven't managed to get something similar in Apple pay?

          • @DeToxin: Maybe apple wants a sizeable cut of the fares. They do it to spotify, nexflix, etc

    • +2

What are these 2 different amounts? A single 2 hour fare ($5.50 now) should cover all of it.

    • Anyone have experience on how busy this bus is and how luggage friendly it is?

      • +1

It’s usually pretty quiet and a couple of suitcases will fit perfectly fine. The main issue with the #901 is its erratic frequency that never seems to mesh with the train timetable.

There are also a couple of suburban buses (#478, #479) connecting the airport to the terminus of the #59 tram, but I’d consider that journey borderline masochism.

      • +2

Its usually no more than half full. Maximum wait time for the bus is about 20min, but there is no real timetable even if there claims to be.
Assume flinders/SC to the airport might take you 1 hour 20mins, just in case you get the worst combo of waiting.

        • Saving $9 for the extra hassle and time. No worth it IMO.

I’d rather take the free DFO shuttle if I’m trying to save money

          • @SirFrankGrimes: I’d definitely research the DFO shuttle a little before relying on it for your next expensive overseas jaunt. It might prove to be more of a theoretical service than an actual one.

            • +1

@Chris17: I literally took it to/from the airport last week. Right on time and just as comfortable as the Skybus

              • @SirFrankGrimes: Thanks! Sounds like a viable option for us. Was it crowded?

                • @Chris17: From the airport on a Friday morning, no.

To the airport on a Sunday afternoon, yes.

          • @SirFrankGrimes: I tend to leave pretty early anyway, so even if it's slow, then I just end up waiting 1.5 hours at the airport instead of 2+.. and I get to keep a free meal worth of money that I didn't spend on an overpriced school bus. Not going to do it for an 8 or 9am flight though obviously, but definitely for one after lunch time where most of the day is wasted anyway.

          • @SirFrankGrimes: Isn't DFO even more hassle to get to and wait for, and you're probably still paying for a myki fare anyway to get there unless you live in walking distance?

            • @wetsandwich: I’m speaking more from a visitor perspective. DFO South Bank is within walking distance of many nearby hotels / AirBnBs

    • Just over 1h compared to 20min

    • As outlined here. Only “expired” because myki has risen in price.

Skybus has been monopoly for years, airport rail should come long ago…..

Times are a little awkward but can be worthwhile for some travelling light.

  • I tried the Agoda Skybus deal a week ago. Worked without any problems.

  • Is this a good deal? There are two of us travelling and Uber is showing as $55 each way, so it isn’t a very big saving considering Uber will drop me outside of my hotel…

    • Uber is better if you are 2 or more people, and with luggage.

(Even better, if you buy/saved the 10% discounted Uber gift cards into your Uber wallet).

With the Skybus, you still have to make your own journey from Southern Cross train station to your final destination, eg. hotel? hostel? friend's house? etc.

If your flight is delayed and you end up returning closer to midnight be prepared to find yourself SOL, because no more skybus tonight or no room for any more suitcases, it's like coming back to a small middle eastern country with no airport train and taxi drivers charging crazy prices

  • I did this in Hobart three weeks ago, was a nice saving

  • I used to get off at Broad Meadows then take a bus to terminal 4. All on a 2 hour paper ticket. Is that still a thing?

  • Never got my ticket from this retailer. Order number you get on webpage did not work, so had to buy a ticket at kiosk. Avoid agoda like a plague

  • Pity it won't take bookings six months or so in advance, which is when my Melbourne trip is.
