[VIC] Free Melbourne Airport Shuttle to/from South Wharf or Essendon Fields DFO, Thursdays-Mondays @ DFO

1450

I'm always keen on alternate ways to get to the airport. If you can get to South Wharf, you can grab a free DFO bus (20-25 minutes).

Our complimentary DFO Tourist Shuttle Bus connects tourists with multiple daily departures from Melbourne Airport to DFO Essendon, DFO South Wharf and return, 5 days a week – Thursday to Monday.

Melbourne Airport Location:

Melbourne Airport outside near the bus terminal. Look for the yellow-coloured DFO Bus

Looking at the FAQ, they have an area on the bus for luggage, prams etc. Also free wi-fi to download your Linux ISOs.

Cool idea by DFO. Just note that the scheduled times are limited to mostly store opening hours and the last shuttle to leave the airport is at 3.45pm.

4 departures a day from the airport

This is awesome. I live near the DFO

This is pretty good. It does say there is “ample room to store shopping and luggage”. Hope that’s true as some people really have a lot of luggage.

thanks OP! did not know this existed and I live nearby. Would be useful when times align, I've always just used the train/bus option.

Thanks I didn’t know about this. There are storage lockers at DFO as well. The DFO at Southwharf is not really close to public transport.

    • DFO Southwharf backs on to the Convention Centre - there's a tram line right outside the front door, you just need to walk the length of the convention centre to get to it. It's flat and well paved indoor and outdoor.

Alternatively Southern Cross station is about a 15 minute walk if you use the footbridge (Seafarers Bridge) over the river - but this walk would suck with luggage.

      • Certainly walkable but not exactly convenient if you’ve just got off a plane then a bus.

Good to know the bus has free wifi to download my Linux isos

Would be interesting if there was tracking of the bus to know if you missed it or if it's running late due to traffic. Their travel and turnaround times seem somewhat optimistic - seeing lines of cars trying to park at South Wharf DFO around black friday, interested to see how the bus can get in and out so quickly.

Rumour has it that the wheels on the bus go round and round

Imagine being a tourist to Melbourne and the highlight of your trip is going to the DFO in Essendon…not sure why you'd bother going to Essendon if you were already at South Wharf (and I am a regular visitor to the Essendon one!)

Go to the Corelle store. Have to pick up your InstantPot before you go home.

I wish they would move the DFO to Docklands where the wheel is. Lots of parking and the free tram terminates there. A lot of the shops are closed so this would rejuvenate the area.

    • Have you ever heard of Harbour Town Docklands?

      • That is what I mean. I wish they would move the DFO there. It is all a bit sad at the moment.

        • At one point, they wanted to put an airport there. That's a good way to force people to go there.

          • @neil: WTF? They must’ve drunk a lot of red wine on that junket to think that was a good idea.

      • Now called "The District" but with the same zombie apocalypse vibes as Harbour Town. Costco Docklands is also shutting up shop soon..

  • DFO South Wharf is Melbourne’s shittest thing

Any reason to avoid Melbourne taxis. No way I'll use them if I can avoid after an unfortunate situation where they refused our fare due to it being an airport hotel.

  • Is this in Tullamarine or Avalon?

    • Tullamarine.

Full marks for this post to OP.
Suggest it regularly gets promoted (say monthly) if not already happening.
Great info for bypassing rip-off monopoly transport to/from major airports.
    Thank you!
