  • so sad nokia is being sold off to Microsoft =\

    • +9

It was sad when Nokia appointed Elop and dropped their Maemo line of phones for Windows Phone.

Being sold off to Microsoft at a significant discount was inevitable.

      • wouldnt be suprised if there was an ozbargain post for that price…

      • i actually still have my old nokia phone that still works as a charm.

although now im using my Huawei Y201 30$ phone x]

always wanted an affordable android nokia phone

    • +5

Sad to think this 1020 is probably the last smartphone that'll carry the Nokia branding.

      • Microsoft licenced the brand for 10 years.

      Nokia's been sad since 2007.

      • +8

Nokia has produced some good, innovative, seriously underrated phones since 2007. Whatever your mobile platform of choice, I think competition in the sector is healthy; Nokia was the most credible competitor outside Apple and the various leading Android vendors, and I'm disappointed to see them being swallowed up.

  • +3

Why would you pre order a phone that you know will be heavily discounted soon after launch?

  • +1

Hmmmm not sure if I should wait abit and see if the price drops after launch..

Besides the Nokia 808, this is arguably the best camera phone ever.

    • I'm not convinced of that.and with the pace technology moves it won't be for long.
      * Sony Xperia Z1 - 20MP G lens
      * Acer S2 -4k video recording

Also interesting are Sony QX10 and QX100 lens for Android.

Finally, making money as windows phone developer is hard, even with promotion from Microsoft.

      • QX10/QX100 is also for iOS. :)

The Sony Xperia uses a 1/2.3-inch Exymor RS CMOS sensor compared to the Nokia Lumia 1020 1/1.5-inch (2/3-inch) image sensor format. Yes, the add on lens is great, but who carries that around in their pocket, whereas the Nokia 1020 is great by itself.

The Acer S2, not sure what sensor it uses, but appears small from the photos. It does 4k video, but image I doubt will be as good. Without OIS, you may have shaky videos as well.

There are many reviews that shows the image quality on the Nokia 808. The only place it may lose out is in optical zoom, (because it doesn't have one). This is where the Samsung S4 Zoom will win out, or the add on lens on the Sony Xperia Z1. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is similar to the 808 but has a smaller sensor compared to the 808, the added advantage is OIS, which allows higher quality low light photography without flash.

The 1020 also has a Xenon flash for low light situation, which the Sony Xperia Z1 was rumoured to have, but appears not to have based on the recent leaks. We will know the truth shortly.

Nokia also has the best recording of sound with it's 'rich recording' microphones. You can record concert music distortion free. HTC tried to use it in their HTC One, but was banned from using the technology.

Windows may have it's shortcoming and struggling to gain marketshare and developers. That's got nothing to do with it being the best camera phone.

      • When mentioning lenses, remember that the 808 and Lumia 1020 can attach lenses (magnetically) as well. Starting with a much larger sensor, those cameras will be much more powerful.

      • Seems to be hard making money in the mobile game scene whether you're Windows Phone or not… very few "indie" groups in the world have made a successful go in making huge returns on creating games. I'd consider it a good return given this guy basically copied someone else's game.

only the yellow version pre-order gets the camera grip?

  • +5

I'm confused, since when is preorder for standard pricing a bargain?

  • +1

808 is the last sybian system of NOKIA and 1020 will be the last one of NOKIA?? both of them carry 4100 megapix camera

  • I cant believe what i read 41 mega pixels camera. My phone only has 8 MP. Is it really innovative? and does it capture great quality picture?

    • +2

High megapixel counts are generally a marketing gimmick, and often aren't a great measure of how good a camera is. That said, the camera on the 1020 is excellent for a phone, particularly in terms of its low light performance.

      • yea more MP doesnt generally make it better
its the sensors that makes the image quality

    • It really is that good. Sample photos here: http://press.nokia.com/products/media/8347/photo/nokia-lumia…

Hit full resolution underneath the image.

    • It is actually only 38 mega pixels usable.

    • It's good but it's because of the sensor size, not the megapixels.
It has a 1/1.5" sensor whereas every other normal phone has 1/3.2".

The 808 has an even larger sensor but this phone has some extra tricks like optical image stabilisation.

    the last tank Nokia produce

although it will be half priced in a month

    • +1

? Nokia are still making phones under the nokia brand, but they are just owned by microsoft now. Its not that big of a deal, if anything nokia has access to more resources than ever now.

  • Personally would have bought it if it wasn't for the slow shot to shot performance, a second or so between shots is unacceptable. Great quality pics though as can be expected for the sensor size.

  • My money is with Z1 because it's not just about the camera - HD Display waterproof 2.2Ghz quadcore and memory card slot clove.co.UK have it listed for $800 android vs win8phone there is no competition

    • The Z1 does look impressive, no doubt about that. But the Android vs WP8 argument is a very subjective matter, and every consumer will have different priorities and preferences, such that some may find WP8 better, while others may prefer Android.

There're reasons for/against each platform, so to say "there is no competition" between the two is an unfair generalisation in my opinion.

    • Nokia has a good rep for making phones with good cameras and they have their own unique patents and optical technologies. That's a selling point Bb or Apple doesnt have.

  • No wireless charging out of the box, the accessory is an extra cost on top of the purchase price.

  • Took a chance and ordered it. Had a play with windows OS in hong kong when I stopped over a week ago and was impressed. Checked and it has all the apps I need in the windows store.

Can't wait to rid myself of my iphone 4.
