Plex for iOS

Plex for iOS brings the power of Plex to your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. With Plex, you can stream your music, videos and photos from your home computers running Plex Media Server (available from http://www.plexapp.com/) and access content from a wide range of channels. Channels are available for apps like Aperture, iTunes and iPhoto, or online services like YouTube, Vimeo and Revision3. There's also a remote control feature for Plex Media Center.

Additionally, you can sign up for the myPlex service, which lets you connect to servers shared with you by your friends, queue videos from your web browser to watch later, and connect to your Plex Media Server at home wherever you are in the world via Wi-Fi or a celluar connection, with no configuration necessary!

Plex Media Server streams your media directly from your computer, so there's no need to convert before viewing. Plex is smart, too - if your media isn't already in a format your device can play, it'll convert it on-the-fly.

    • +10

well if you have an iphone get the ios version and if you have an android device get the android version.

      • +1

        too smart!

    • iOS = $1.99 (was $5)
      Android = $2.20 (was $5.50)

USD or AUD, I don't know.

      • it shows $1.99 in google play.

        • For me it says 'AU$2.20 to Buy', maybe you're not on the Aus site?

  • Free for PlexPass users, and it's damn well worth it!

    • Please explain to me how PlexPass is worth it. Seriously $30 a year for what?

      • +3

In addition to beta features (and a special forum badge… Woo) you can sync media to your device for offline viewing. Has come in handy for me when I used to catch public transport to work 30min each way daily.
Edit: there is a once off lifetime subscription for $75 which makes itself easier on the pocket, plus this application is epic i feel Élan, Barkley and the crew deserve it!

        • +1

Wouldn't it be easier just to copy the media across for free without lossy transcoding?

Unless you have an iOS device i guess…

        • Nope, PlexSync is much more convenient. And transcoding only occurs when necessary or beneficial.

  • Great price, i use it for streaming media to my android tablet and windows machines!, just be aware when streaming 720p and 1080p mkvs it uses quite alot of processes

  • What a bummer I bought this for $5.49 a couple of days ago.

Great app by the way. Good find too.

  • Yes, great app. Well worth the money. I use it daily and so handy to watch stuff on your iPad. Love it.

  • Nice .. i bought it for $5 2 weeks ago … bummer.

  • Amazing app I use it to stream from my macbook to my LG TV, crazy how fast it loads too.

Does the Plex Media Server app cost money? Couldn't quite work it out with a quick squizz on http://plexapp.com/.

    • +5

nope, its free to use. best media server available imho

    • +2

Totally free mate. Download server and media centre for win/osx and enjoy free.
Other than that you can download plex app from you tv/blu-ray app store if you have Samsung, LG etc.
Been using plex for years and freaking love it!

Required a lot work to get the movie details queued to my server :)

  • Great program.

You guys should check out MediaBrowser 3: http://mediabrowser3.com/

It's the new version of MediaBrowser 2 - but rebuilt from the ground up, with server, metadata fetchers, Media Center client, stand alone client, iOS, android and Roku clients. Most are still in beta, but the Server and Media Center clients are very close to complete.

  • What's the difference between this and using VPlayer (Connecting to my NAS via samba)?

    • on-the-fly transcoding for "dumber" devices so you can watch your media while you're out (if you get good reception/wifi), say in the doctors office.

      • And say rip to your monthly data allowance?

        • -1

Plus having to leave your PC running 24/7 because their crappy server software doesn't work on real NASes.

          It's babies first HTPC.

        • What do you mean by it doesn't work on real NASes?

  • +2

    SAB + SB + CP + PLEX = ∞ ♥

I paid for full price for this app on both iOS and Android… Quite possibly the best money spent on my devices.

    • +3

ok I almost get what Plex is, can someone tell me what SAB SB and CP are

      its ok, post google:
      SAB: http://sabnzbd.org/
SB: Sick Beard - Internet PVR for your TV Shows
CP: CouchPotato (CP) is an automatic NZB and torrent downloader

Plex are a true scumbag company. Take XBMC code and give nothing back in return. The embodiment of opensource leecher. Even if it was free I wouldn't touch their rubbish. Put in the effort and setup XBMC with a MySql backend on a real NAS.

    • +1

Take opensource code and make changes to suit whatever the hell you want. Isn't that what opensource is all about?

Anyway, XBMC does not transcode which is the whole benefit of Plex, particularly with mobile devices. I'm sure you can get the same services by combining several applications but PLex is AIO so why bother?

      • -1

"Take opensource code and make changes to suit whatever the hell you want. Isn't that what opensource is all about?"
No it is not. Opensource is about taking code and contributing back either via submitting code or financially. Take Boxee for example, that's a commercial product that's based off XBMC yet they have contributed both bug fixes and have sponsored XBMC financially.

Plex are within the law, but that doesn't make it ethical.

Transcoding is a benefit for Plex, however besides from that it's a watered down product designed to cater for the ignorant.

Has Plex even got PVR support yet? Or haven't they got around to stealing XBMC's code for that?

  • I love Plex!

  • Plex is brilliant! Use it at home for streaming to my tablet and phone!

  • This is actually the first time I've used Plex (used to use XBMC but the missing features became too much). For videos it seems great, but the music side of things seems really limited. The only button I ever use (apart from play/pause) is 'shuffle all' and it doesn't have one :( There is no way to add multiple tracks to a playlist, nor get collection of songs to play at once (apart from an album). Most of the time this means; play one song, navigate to a new song, play that, etc.

    • What features was XBMC missing exactly?

      • Transcoding & 'play on device x' would be the main two. eg I'm watching something on the TV and somebody else needs it, I can continue from where I'm upto on any other device with Plex on it.

I'm pretty sure XBMC has a lot more features than Plex (it certainly has a lot more config options), but I just want to watch movies, TV & listen to music on any device in the house. For me, XBMC takes that simple task and makes it better + more complicated, Plex just makes it better* + simpler

I also like the way Plex works in a client & server mode. eg add the youtube channel plugin to the server, then each client can access the youtube channel. I don't have to install plugins or whatever on each client.

*with the exception of music, which XBMC does better, even then, I wouldn't say it does it well.

        • Simple. Use a central MySql sever for XBMCs library, then the watched/resume history will automatically be in sync across all devices.

XBMC is available for AppleTV, Windows, Mac, Linux, Andrioid, iPad and iPhone. What more you need?

        • Simple. Use a central MySql sever for XBMCs library, then the watched/resume history will automatically be in sync across all devices.

Thanks, but you are providing a solution for problems I no longer have (and shouldn't have had).

          iPad and iPhone

          Must be jailbroken

          Android

Not 'official' via Google Play, not that it really matters.

Also, I don't want full blown XBMC interface on a mobile device. On a phone in particular that would be too small.

Please don't try and sell the virtues XBMC to me in a Plex vs. XBMC comparison. I have tried XBMC and found it lacking in the things I want and rich in the things I don't need. I agree that users should try XBMC first (because it's free-er, larger community, device support(?) etc) and then Plex to make up their own mind.
