This is the new Nexus 7 that was on sale in the US last week, with Full HD 7" screen, Qualcomm quadcore CPU, 2GB RAM etc. Have no idea when it is going to be on Google's Play Store in Australia, and looks like it won't hit the retail here until September — at unknown price too. MobyCity has already attempted to do a cash-grab by selling the 16GB Wi-Fi version at $509 + postage…

That's where B&H Photo Video comes in, who often posts many US-only electronics at US price but with a bit of postage fee.

In this case Nexus 7 16GB costs USD $229 + USD $38.86 postage = USD $267.86 ~= AUD $300 delivered.

Yeah it's only a few months ago you have AUD > USD but unfortunately this is the price you have to pay these days. The last generation Nexus 7, which is still pretty good, are sold at $179 delivered for a 32GB refurb unit and that might be a better buy if you don't need the latest.

Edit: It's surprising that B&H only has one review on ProductReview.com.au and a pretty bad one-star one as well. My dealings with B&H has always been excellent.

At this price the last generation is imho a better buy, double storage for nearly half the price

    • +6

If your main purpose for a tablet is for storing music, video, loading it up with lots of heavy games, etc then yes, more storage = better.

However I have been putting off buying the last gen N7 ever since the spec of the new N7 came out. Full HD 7" makes it a 300+ DPI screen, Qualcomm APQ8064 makes it quite a bit faster than Tegra3. It also has HDMI out via an add-on, which is one feature I really need but Google/Asus left out in the last gen N7.

      • +3

True true, it all comes down to the use. 16gb though doesn't leave much wiggle room for full HD content, wish they had stuck a micro sd slot in. Maybe that will be the revolutionary feature in the third addition :)

        • The old one had USB OTG, I presume this does too.
Not ideal, but if you "need" the extra space, it's available.

        • +4

USB OTG cable + 500gb portable hard drive = come at me HDbro

        • I got one of these.. well because I could :P
          http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/andyfei/mini-microsd-rea…

But truth is 16gb is plenty for me. My tablet is at home most of the time.. and i usually stream most of my stuff.. either from plex or over the internet.

        • Since I wasn't a backer I can't see the updates, but any info if they are going to be selling more?

        • I'm sure they will… But I don't recall reading any updates to state as much.

      • I'm surprised the Kindle Fire 8.9 wasn't more popular. Has full-HD 16:10, same sound system as the new nexus 7, and HDMI out. Main downside is the need to side-load apps that are not in the Amazon store, but that should not put off the Ozbargain set so easily. Especially if it goes at $229 again.

        • Dual Core is a turn off to me.. I prefer that size though. 7" is a bit too small for my liking and 10" a bit too big.

        • +9

          That's what she said.

        • does she say she wants a quad core as well? :-)

        • That's what she said
          \
          … aaaaahhh damn you ryang!!!!

        • -1

then get a Mini iPad !

      • Yea the display is awesome, also it has stereo speakers. Also has international warranty

      • -1

If your main purpose for a tablet is using it as a tablet then more storage = better

      • +2

Don't forget the 2GB of RAM compared to just 1GB in the old version. That will make a huge difference if you like to switch between apps and have a few browser tabs open at the same time.

        • +1

Though due to the increase in resolution a lot of the RAM will be used for that.

  • What price is this supposed to retail here when it comes out?

  • Pricey

  • -1

    and here they come.

    • in a good way of course. (deals for the new nexus 7)

  • No GPS?

    • +1

It has GPS on board, but I have read reports that changing apps while GPS is on would render locking issue that can only be fixed by rebooting. Hopefully just a software issue that can be fixed soon.

      • I'm sure that's not the case.. It would've got picked up in one of the hundreds of reviews.. Hell even Facebook uses GPS…

  • +3

I think I will wait for a version with more storage…..I have a 16GB Galaxy Nexus which is full of music (FLAC takes a lot of storage)

It sounds like the person who reviewed BH on productreview is a bit of an idiot, it looks like they got stung by import duty, which I am pretty sure is clearly stated to be the responsibility of the buyer.

  • +3

I'll be waiting on a $250 32GB price point. No rush, I still love the N7 I have and 4.3 just made it even more buttery smooth!

Also hdmi out is something that I have hardly ever used even though I have two of the bloody cables laying around here (for 32GB + 32GB SD Xoom)

  • +3

I'll wait for the aus stock, don't want to have a US charger adaptor and then go get myself an adaptor to use it here, makes the adaptor more bigger.

    • +2

It'll work with any other standard Android charger.

    • +1

      Or just bend the pins?

      • Dodgy, but effective..
I've done this for one of my chargers.. the pin isn't actually bent at all, the plastic housing has deformed to allow the pin to make the 45 degree angle.
I don't take it out of the socket for fear of the plastic giving way.

    • +2

Yeah it charges with standard micro USB port, and I'm sure most ozbargainers would have half a dozen lying around in the house, as the industry-excluding-apple seems to settle down on that plug.

      • +1

You can just plug the micro USB cable into an Apple USB power adaptor, that works too :P

      • How many amps is the standard Nexus charger from the US?

        • My Nexus 7 (2013) adapter says the output is 5.2V, 1.35A. Not sure about the first/old Nexus 7 though

  • Yup I purchased the aussie stock of the nexus 7v1, and got the aussie charger, but dont use it. Just use the USB micro cable.

  • +4

Wish AUD was still running strong. Still remember the days that you get 1.08 USD for every dollar and it would be like $245 delivered >_<

  • I wanted to get the 32gb version but the purported multiple issues stop me :(

Who knows how many of the issues are faulty units or software issues that can be fixed.

  • +1

I'm holding off for a few reasons

    1. It's going to be a PITA getting international warranty in Australia before its release
    2. There have been a tonne of issues with the first models (dust on screen/dead pixels)

I was at the B&H store on 34st in New York like last week, HUGE store - awesome stuff. Should've got it then!

    • +2

It really is a magnificent store, the automated conveyor belts and little stock elevators moving stock everywhere is awesome.

    • I've heard my friend who lives close to B&H saying their instore logistic is very weired.

      • +1

        Wonka of IT. XD

      • +1

It is not like any store I've been to. There is lots of stock everywhere to look at, but if you want to buy something you have to order it, ie. go to one of many counters, the person behind the counter will put it in the system, it'll arrive about a minute later in a box along the conveyor belts. You confirm it's what you want and then off it goes in the box again. You get a ticket for the item.

Once you've done all your shopping and got your tickets, you go to the line of counters at the front and pay for all the items on your tickets.

Then you move to the next counter at the front, show them the ticket and collect your already bagged up goods.

    • I was there in June. I didn't want to leave. :D

  • If it's AUD 300 when releasing, I will get iPad mini instead.

    • -4

You bet… The new Ipad Mini.

      • No, it will be iPad Mini with retina display.

        • +1

The new Ipad Mini with quad retina display and dual 4k video 3d extra Mark II glasses

    • +9

I think if you live on Apple's ecosystem, you should just get the iPad Mini. For Android users there are a lot more choices and this Nexus 7 update certainly makes it one of the best 7" around.

      • +2

        Yes this ^

I tried to put some audio books on my bro in law's iPhone 5 last night, what a PITA. Couldn't shift any files over without installing iTunes or taking a chance on some possibly dodgy third party software.

        Each to their own though.

        • -7

Couldn't shift any files over without installing iTunes or taking a chance on some possibly dodgy third party software

Or… you could install iTunes and do it in 5 seconds.

          Each to their own though.

        • You CAN do it with apps such as CloudReader which allow wifi uploading to the device, no iTunes or plugging in required. Or email it to the device.
but each to their own though.

        • +2

I wouldn't want to install iTunes onto my rig, I've had that bloatware before, never again thanks.

        • +1

@theguyrules, never knew about CloudReader but tbh I don't want to be uploading 4GB of files, why on earth don't they allow you to plug and play like every other device on the planet?

        • +4

Personally I find itunes incredibly unintuitive to use, it runs terribly on a PC, and I object to having to install software just to copy files onto a USB drive. It's alright it you already have a Mac with itunes and an apple device I guess.

        • It's alright it you already have a Mac with itunes

I do, and its nice on the desktop, but still hate the idea of being forced to use itunes to "sync" my phone/tablet.

So much nicer to be able to load videos over USB or wifi from anywhere, and use my own choice of music manager.

        • Cause Apple. Can't explain why, can only give an alternative to iTunes unfortunately. I have an iPad but I'm keen to get a Nexus 7 or something similar when a few more of my daily used apps are brought over.

        • -2

Thanks for your life story and cat photo

      • Why is there such a debate on Apple vs. Android on every thread about a device.

I just think there are three groups of people. First, there's the Apple camp, who will always buy Apple regardless of whatever anybody else says. That's fine, I have certain brand allegiances too. But then some Apple fans will go out of their way to prove that their Apple device is superior to another (usually Android), stating pretty common points such as integration, "smoothness", reliability, build quality…etc.

Then there's the Android camp, those who will always buy Android. Some of them will go out of their way to point out how superior their hardware specifications are to Apple's devices…etc.

Then there's the rest of the people who will just choose a device based on it's merits. There are probably very few of these people.

At the end of the day, each of us will like different things, some will like Apple, even though they may make crappy, expensive products, just like some people will like BMW over Mercedes Benz or Mazda over Toyota.

    • +3

Well that is your choice, but there's really no comparison between this and an ipad mini. Even last gen N7 was arguably better than the mini, but I suppose it depends a lot on personal choice and whether or not you invest into one of the ecosystems. There's always an early adopters tax when new tech comes out, in a few weeks they should drop down a bit in price if people are willing to wait. If not pay extra now, and enjoy being one of the first with a new toy. :)

      • Pay 'extra' now and then claim that extra with your 28 degrees.

Late September release in OZ is good. Let them sort out their manufacturing issues, and use the yanks as guineapigs.

  • Remember that its even cheaper if shipping two units from BHP, see:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/85010

  • Any news on pricing of the 4G version?

    • Yeah, and would the 4G work with telstras 4g Network ?

    • -3

yeah, they said only muppets buy 3G/4G enabled devices when you can get the same result from a wifi hotspot/device

  • would my old nexus 7 case still fit this one?

    • Nope

      • It's slightly wider and not so long.

  • +1

I like this, but bezel is still ridiculously huge. Also not sure if this is wifi or 3g. I'm going to wait and see whether they refresh the Nexus 10 with a quad/octo core processor, and local pricing for the 7.

    • +1

      It's just the wifi version.

  • Need local warranty as my n7 had constant issues

    • +1

  • Shipping two units cost US$46.06~

someone lives close to Melbourne city ( Carlton~ North Melbourne) want to share the shipping fee?

    • +2

got a friend to buy one with me and already ordered :)

    • i'm in. have you ordered it yet?

      • 3 is a charm? so tempting!

hows the warranty thingy ma jingy.

      • I just bought two 32gb.
        Price is $274 USD each
Plus $31 USD shipping costs ($62 for two).
Selling it at cost converted to cash AUD price plus any local shipping charges if applicable.
Please message me if you want it.
Your total costs will be USD $305 converted to AUD plus any local shipping charges.

    • Interested in 16GB Model…should come to around AU $285 shipped for 1 piece.

  • bought! not to mess around, hope all goes smooth, price seems nice, Nexus 7 without question best little slate on the market currently for android users.

    • Same, I'm guessing the Aussie price to be $280-$300. No need to worry if it gets sold out when it does officially launch here.

  • Guys, do you know whether the new nexus7 comes with film protector? or we need to buy our own? Where can we buy it, considering the tablet only out a couple of days ago?

    • I've never had one on my 7 and it still has no scratches. Phones I can understand but tablets don't get pocketed with keys and coins.

      • I think it will wear over time even if you don't scratch it?

    • Aren't the screen fronts on these made from glass and thus resistant to scratching?
A screen protector should not be necessary.
Even my Chinatab has a glass front and not a mark on it after 1 year.

  • One more inch and I'm sold.

    • +2

      TWSS?

    • One more inch and price will be on par with a mini.

      • this is a better spec'd pad - if you like android. choose your ecosystem. buy your pad. apple is lacking for my liking. IMHO apple is too far behind and too closed.

  • +2

i was an apple fan boy too but nexus 7 made me switch from ipad mini.

I sold my iphone 4s for nexus 4. sold my jailbroken apple tv 2 for android hdmi dongle.

    • And a new android fan bo… oh wait.

  • I am interested in Ordering the 16GB New Nexus 7. Don't need much space anyway as OTG is always there. If anyone else in Melbourne(I am in CBD Area) is interested , please PM me . We can order together and share the shipping.

It would be around $285 shipped for each Nexus 7 2013 16GB Model. We should get it by end of the coming week as the 16GB is already in stock with B&H. I remember I paid exactly the same($285) in last August for my Nexus 7 16GB from officeworks after price matching, so not a bad price :D
