or get a domain-validated ssl certificate for free from https://www.startssl.com/?app=1

i've been using them for a few years without any problems

    • I went to that link and was presented with the big, red Chrome "This server's certificate is not trusted" error. Would be good for pure encryption and security, but not the best first impression for commercial e-commerce websites.

it's a green bar in firefox. they are not some dodgy company. does chrome give a reason for the untrusted cert?

I just tried with Chrome 28 on Windows, and it displayed the green EV box with company name correctly. Not sure why you're getting an error. Maybe someone's doing a man-in-the-middle attack on you? :p

Certainly works for Chrome for me (28.0.1500.71 on Win7Pro).

However with StartSSL, the biggest issue (for me at least) is that you can only get 1 year at a time, and the validation process can be tedious. I used to use them on OzBargain, but got sick of doing the validation every year and just went with a 5 year RapidSSL cert.

        • Yep, and the support forums are full of horror stories of them holding certs and validation for ransom. Demanding over the top ID requirements.

Not things a legit company should be doing..

Edit: don't get me wrong, I use StartSSL as well, just not for anything I'd ever want anyone else to rely on.

$3.95/year at GoGetSSL, or free at StartSSL.

  • Who's the root domain for the SSL cert?

    • I want to know, where is the skill involved in killing an elephant? Pretty dumb.
