Unlikely but interested may try for price match with local retailers, otherwise decent offer for students.

talking about usability or OS(RT)?
That makes no sense.
A surface RT competes with an iPad. It has nothing to do with a laptop.
A surface pro does however compete with a laptop.
Surface RT is pretty much a laptop minus the freedom to install programs and a stylus pen?
Other than that it is just like a laptop.
No its a tablet with the base Desktop for the Office applications and compatibility for almost any website or Windows device/network
Tablets run ARM processors Slate/Hybrids run Intel/AMD
Think of RT as the Metro apps + basic desktop freedom (e.g. Windows networks, printers Explorer) while also being very secure due to its locked down nature
Surface RT is basically like Android with a Windows skin.
if you want, but runs smoother and more secure than Droid
still too expensive for what you are getting
Really? Core i5, 4GB RAM, 64 / 128 GB SSD, 1920x1080 Touch Screen with Digitizer is too little? Granted it doesn't have a hinge, an extra 1.5KG and 15" but… you get a lot of computer for $899 / $989!
Would you say that a $399 low-end Android tablet is too dear for what you are getting if you compared it to, say, a Core i3 laptop with 4GB of RAM at the same price?
That 64 GB or 128 GB SSD, by the time you own it you only get to use a portion of it. Plus there is no expansion storage for micro sd
It can take upto 64gb microsd card.
I think that's expensive, yes. That's a reference to sticker price, not hardware.
A $399 Android tablet is not expensive. You can make an argument that the Surface is better value for money, but it doesn't change the fact that the sticker price is expensive.
It really depends what you intend to do with it. A core i5 in an Android tablet would be wasted. But the $399 tablet does what it needs to do and doesn't require an i5 to do it.
If we're going to talk those specs, I'd rather get an Ultrabook.
I think student will need to type a lots and then you will need a proper keyboard, it doesn't make sense to buy a tablet plus keyboard. Go buy a ultrabook which is much more convenience and you will find lots more benefit comparing to tablet, and it's cheaper too.
I have a 11" windows tablet for mobile work, every time I set it up with keyboard typing, I said to myself that's really stupid to buy this tablet instead of a proper laptop.
they can write and not type:

jst trying to convience myself.
did you ever try it?
My phone can "write", my nexus7 can write, my windows tablet can write, My desktop can write as well if I buy a touch mouse, but who really use it?
I "think" that all students are different and those students studying courses that have a crap load of equations and graphs will appreciate the ability to be able to both write lots and type lots - something that an ultrabook can't do.
IF all you do is type, then yes, why bother - unless you don't want both a tablet and a laptop. Something that even haswell can't yet do without some compromise.
You can use something like this for non touch laptops

What about the benefits of touchscreen, swiping etc?
Better bargain on the 32 Gb Surface RT if you're a student. $219 without type keyboard cover and $319 with it.
No, this one required the school to order the unit on behalf of the students, compared to this one required Proof of School ID
However I got 2 using this deal :D
How did you get the schools to get it for you? I want to help my girlfriend organise one for/through uni.
I work in IT and when the Schools IT department put in a request for personal hardware for testing which will be paid for by the staff, its not too hard to put the order in :)
If you are at a school for example just put the request to the IT department and offer cash upfront for the HW, should be pretty easy if you put your case well enough.
Just note that the 64GB model only has 23GB of usable space.
I research the samsung Ativ 500t, Surface Pro, Envy x2 and Asus Tf810c for weeks and seriously If you are not going to much gaming or serious Photoshop like demanding task. IMHO get the Asus Tf810c instead for similar price, bought one never been happier!
Perfect, if you do 1080P movie, surf the net, normal office suite and light photo editing and streaming. especially when you travel, I get 18 hours powerhouse compared with my friend's Surface Pro can only manged at best aproximately 5 hours, and a decent workable screen 11.6", a zen-Ultrabook like keyboard and Wacom stylus! I think a lot of people are just sceptical of Atoms from the old days but to be fair these new lover trail Atoms are more than sufficient for normal day to day, check online and you'd find most reviewes are favoruable if you do not need all the horse-power of i5; for me it will be like driving a V8 when you are just commuting around town!
Furthermore, I believe these i5 are going to be obsolete very shortly with the new Haswell chip round the corner and because they still need a fan they could still not replace the Atoms silent no heat. I watch 2x 1080P movies and had office running in backgroud and it does not even heat up a bit, so cool (literally) to hold compared with my Note 10.1…. now just gathering dust….even my other half is asking me to get her one too……anyway just my 2 cent!

reviews on Amazon are mixed and not that favourable
Why do people insist on putting the important info at the very END of the subject line? Seriously.
So that the deal can make you jump out of the couch but settle back in disappointment. A way to share Poster's own experience with the deal. ;)
Good deal for students. I bought one at full price and use it every day. My ipad and laptop have not been used since. It really is a great devices and combines entertainment/media consumption (e.g. ipad) and work functionality (e.g. laptop) in one device.
I've got it linked to a large monitor, bluetooth keyboard and mouse on my desk and use the type cover on the go. Best purchase in a long time!
These MS tablet is waste of money because Haswell CPU is already out.
.
Make sure you understand the actual useable space of the Tablet. A 64 Gb only has about 36 GB available. It is very heavy on its OS space.
Great little unit, I would have like a larger screen personally, but the digitiser is amazing as a student. I just fire up onenote and away I go.
I have the type cover, which gets any hevy typing done, although the trackpad is shoddy IMO.
I thought Microsoft was giving a larger discount on these to students. JB Hifi sells the 128GB one for $100 more only. http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/tablets/mic…
Am I missing something here?
Great timing. I have been umming and aching this tablet for awhile now. I ordered the Lenovo Thinkpad Helix, but am thinking of cancelling it because this is half the price with similar specs. Now I know I can get an educational discount, all the better!
I'm mostly looking to replace my Cintiq with a more portable alternative for drawing and photoshop work.
Thanks OP for the post but I bought 128Gb for $1000+ $95 for type cover just last sunday. It wasnt difficult just asked the guy there to do some good deal and he reduced it to $1000.
I agree with comments above this is real deal not just a toy like android and apple tablets, I use it everyday and I must say more I use it more I like the touch applications on Windows 8, and looking forward to Windows 8.1 on it.
Here is the link. I would be happy if someone can benefit from it like I have in past in other deals from Ozbargain.

Got the Surface RT. I have one thing to say for any possible future buyers…
Just get a laptop.
