  • Is this unit better than the Jb-hifi pioneer offer mentioned previously

    • If by Jb-hifi you mean Harvey Norman and by better you mean cheaper, then no.

      • That deal is expired, the JB price is still valid http://www.jbhifi.com.au/jb-hi-fi-home-audio/receiver/pionee…

      • Nope dont mean HN i mean JB http://www.jbhifi.com.au/jb-hi-fi-home-audio/receiver/pionee…

& by better i mean is the Yamaha a btr unit than the pioneer unit. I don't care if the pioneer is cheaper, if the Yamaha is better its worth near $50 more

        • The old Pioneer vs Yamaha debate is the same as Coke vs Pepsi; six of one, half a dozen of the other at any given price point…it's just down to personal preference.

Why not listen to both??? I did, I preferred the Pioneer, you may prefer the Yammy…who cares, if you like it, buy what you like.

        • +3

I don't think they have very big difference for entry level AMP.

I would save the $$ go for pioneer and get a better speaker instead.

  • I can't compare the 2 models based on actual usage. This amp is the entry level model (4 vs 5 HDMI inputs and slightly less power and 5.1 channel vs 7.1 channel compared to higher level Yamaha). If those limitations (and a few other minor ones) are ok, then entry level is ok for you.

Based on older models, I have always preferred Yamaha over pioneer for sound quality and build quality. A friend of mine (the best techno I know) swears by Yamaha as best bang for buck given performance and build quality (he's also a sound engineer for a band).

As for the price, it seems fine. The reviews of this amp are all very positive.

    • Yamaha typically more robust too… Less faults.

      • Based on what, exactly???

        • The above must be Yamaha reps or something….. I'd only get the Yamaha because it does HDMI passthrough on standby….

  • Does anyone know if it is ok to use 4 ohm speakers on the Pioneer VSX-522 receiver? Will it damage the receiver or the speakers as it states at the back that it will only take 6-16ohm speakers? Thank you.

    • no issue with less impedance speakers, just be careful of your volume control.
