Just for those who care, this is the Pro Extreme version. So it's performance is pretty much the same as the Samsung 840. It's a good alternative for good performance SSD.
I think the Samsung 840 Pro is still better if you have the spare $40 in your budget

    • +4

this is the Pro Extreme version

No, this is Plextor's standard level M5S SSD — MSY's ad has model number PX-128M5S; the Pro Extreme version would be PX-128M5P.

AFAIK, performance of this drive is on par with the Samsung 840, but I personally prefer the MLC NAND in the M5S vs the TLC NAND in the 840, due to longevity concerns surrounding TLC. The Pro Extreme version is better than the Samsung 840 but slightly slower than the 840 Pro.

  • +5

I don't need another SSD, but boy do I want to buy this bad.

  • Do these ones have the Msata inside?

    • After a google I guess it is not

  • Raid the two and you'll have have fast R/R speed, forgo trim but no problem for 2 years on a gaming unit.

  • this a good deal? Good brand? sorry dont know much about SSD just that Samsung is really good

    • +10

Very good price & brand. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Plextor made the best and most expensive CD writers. Now we don't burn CDs anymore, so they start making SSDs.

  • +1

Thanks OP, was looking for a reasonable priced SSD for the missus laptop. This one will be perfect. Cheers!

  • -8

the day when MSY becomes the Apple Store….ppl will be lining up for this me thinks…

    • Huh?

  • Thanks op! :)

  • I have an older server which started to warn that one of the SAS drives from the sys mirror is going to fail. I wonder if a pair of these would be a good replacement for the system disk mirror. I know SSDs have some troubles in RAID but how bad are they? (may be a forum issue, will shift if people complain).

  • i've got a inspiron 17SE and was thinking of making this the primary hdd and leaving the 1tb as a secondary hdd, good idea? do i have to worry about this fitting in? pretty sure this ssd would fit it perfectly, but any confirmation would be great.

    • +1

Do you have a second HDD bay?

    • +1

I've fit similar height drives in netbooks, if your 17SE can't take it, I'd be very surprised.

      • Im more wondering how he/she plans on fitting it internally as most laptops dont have secondary bay's? No doubt in my mind that just the SSD would fit.

        • +1

Being a 17" unit, it's very likely it has the space to fit a secondary drive bay. Sometimes you can swap out the DVDRW for an additional HDD too. But I'm leaning toward the fact the 17SE actually has two drive bays given its mammoth size.

        • +2

On my last few laptops I've removed the optical drive and put a second hard drive in its place using a caddy, so maybe that's what draistlin plans on doing?

    • I've recently purchased a 17R SE, and there are definitely two hdd bays. At the time I moved the 1tb hdd that came with it to the secondary bay, and put an smaller sata drive in the primary bay (to be later swapped out with an SSD). There are two bays, there is a hdd bracket in each bay - so two hdds can be installed from factory

  • -4

    200mb/s write

    that sounds pretty shit

    • +3

That's pretty much on par with many other drives at this capacity and lower price range.

Crucial M4 128GB: Sequential Read - Up to 500MB/s, Sequential Write - Up to 175MB/s
Samsung 840 120GB: Sequential Read - Up to 530MB/s, Sequential Write - Up to 130MB/s

  • Compatible for a macbook pro?

  • yeah, its got two hdd bays, so thats why was planning on chucking the ssd into the primary and moving the 1tb into the secondary.

  • Is anyone using a 128GB SSD as their system drive? I think Windows 8 would use close to 25-30GB of that - is there enough room for basic applications like Office (installing games and storing media on mechanical drives)?

May as well just get 2, even if I don't RAID them.

    • +2

      Easy.

    • +2

Yeah, i got a 128gb SSD as a boot drive, then an internal 1TB for storage, as well as an external 3TB for media. Yet to fill up the SSD as a boot drive…

      • Cheers.. I'll have a very similar set-up and can't honestly think of many apps I use these days aside from the web-browser, Office and a few Metro apps.

    • +2

You should be fine with 128GB. I even manage with a 60GB SSD partition on my MacBook Pro, with Windows 8 Pro, Office 2013 Professional Plus and a few other apps installed (games are on a separate HDD) — there's about 20GB free space. You can save a few more GBs by disabling fast boot/hibernation, but I haven't found that necessary.

    • +1

bro I have a 60gb ssd as my windows 8 boot drive plus still room for mw3 and some programs.

    • +2

Count me in there, I have 3x PCs running 128gb SSDs as system drives at nowhere near capacity.

  • I bought one of these last time MSY had them on sale (256GB model) and have been very impressed!
MSY were easy to deal with and the drive has been rock solid. Boot time on my W7 laptop is about 10 seconds :D

  • never bought from msy when they have their 1 day sales, do i just add it to the cart and pickup on wednesday?

  • Will this SSD work on a 6-years old ASUS laptop (F3F)?

    • +3

As long as it has SATA connections it should.

  • I don't get why the write speed is sub par, a kingston of equivalent range is easily double of that…

need to research more on this

    • -6

its crap because its a low end ssd

higher end ssds get 500+ write

    • Link with equivalent price…?

  • how do you go about pre ordering these tomorow?

Doesnt seem to have any link on the product page

    do we email them?

  • -2

    wong price

    • +1

Does that really deserve a neg? But yeah, post should say $79.

    • +1

      who is that

  • Does anyone know if this comes with the 3.5" brackets ?

    • +1

It doesn't come with a bracket.

  • That's cheaper than the 128GB Flash drive from Kogan! SSD will become the main HDD in the near future I would say.

    • It already is a 'main hdd' for some people. Well, for those who use ultrabooks or don't have much media they need to store.

      • Yes, what I meant was it's still not as popular as the 2.5" SATA Drive. :)

  • -2

    Never heard of Plextor…

    • +3

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plextor

      Long standing, well-regarded brand.

    • +3

they've been around like forever, always famous for optical disc writers

this SSD war is starting to attract more companies to diversify into it, which is good for consumers

      • Would you say their products are trustworthy and reliable as much as a brand such as OCZ or Sandisk?

        • +2

lol plextor owns them both by far

ocz make some nice high end stuff but their reputation is pretty bad overall

  • +3

AnandTech review of the 256GB model: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6090/plextor-m5s-256gb-review
Note the 128GB model has equivalent read speeds but nearly half the write speed of the 256GB model. This is a simlar story with the Samsung 840 too though, the 120GB version has much slower writes then the 250GB (130MB/s vs 250MB/s).

You might want to add M5S to the description and a link to the actual product.

Just makes it easier for everyone. :)

  • +1

    my own two cent:

brought a 840 250GB for 179, put win8 pro in it. Only key software such as office and Modern Apps install in SSD, so far only 45GB used in the 232 GB disk. Therefore even with only 11X usable GB, there would still be some 70GB left in the drive which is more than enough for many occasions.

I use a 1TB hdd in the notebook's ODD bay as primary software install drive.

Boot up time in current drive is less than 10 seconds to desktop.
Gaming performance is excellent. Win score is 8.1

I expect this 128 GB drive to be on par, Win 8 is the OS for SSD,, highly recommended!!!

  • Any idea this SSD has 1 or 3 years warranty?

    • It comes with a 3 year warranty as with all the S series SSDs, the pro series comes with 5yrs

  • Is this SSD 7mm or 9mm

    • this is likely the 9mm version judge from the photos googled online in review sites

the Samsung 840 series is the 7mm thinner type

      • +1

Anyone know for sure? My lappy only takes the thinner one.

        • Yep 9mm. I have one of these in my laptop and 2 256GB ones in my desktop.

  • Got me thinking if this would be suitable for running Windows Home Server on it?

Keepin the power consumption low with SSD.

    Thoughts?

    • if you really want to save power, the Samsung are unbeatable at this stage. I believe it was their experiences in phones that gave them the edge.

however, having said that, the real power saving of a few wh may not amount to much, since it is the bloody service fee that is driving cost up for households!

      • thanks for your reply,

I know its only a few wh, but if its an "Always On' system, I can set the 3.5" TB disks to sleep when not needed, and the SSD could keep things cool and quiet.

These SSDs are going to always use less power than their 3.5" HDDs right?

        • for the Samsung and intel ones, their test data show it does have considerable less power than the rest.

Having said that, 2.5 inch Disk hard drive use less power than 3.5 drives and SSDs like those mentioned above use a lot less than some other SSD makers.

This one in question is the mid range type.

U can easily google the best performers in sites like Tomshardware.

  • How reliable is this product? Will I encounter BSOD? I'm not too familiar with Plextor.

  • +1

I was in MSY when I saw this deal,
They were happy to sell it for $79 and not to wait until Wednesday… YEAH :)

And now I might got banned from MSY for telling everyone this.

    • +3

Yeah, if you have voltfox tattooed on your forehead.

    • I went into MSY thinking today was tomorrow (because I first saw this deal around 12am today thinking it was still yesterday, which in my head, I thought tomorrow would be today). I felt really stupid when he said the deal was actually tomorrow, because I went in with a large smirk thinking it was today. Nonetheless, he called the manager and gave the OK!. Got it at the end, a day early. :-)

  • Great deal good luck getting one, line up will be down the street and then the pos will fail

  • Will purchase this for my mbp early 2011, will feel brand new again!

  • Can I ask, Is this a good price?

    • +1

80 ppl seem to think so :)

  • +2

    I'll make it 81 then :p

  • Has anybody pre-ordered yet? I have only ever shopped MSY in person, but I can't get there until Thursday. How does their system work, is it available to order at $79 yet?

    • Just had a squizz on their site - doesn't seem to be any mechanism for pre-ordering (the thing goes into your cart at full price).

  • +2

If you can't pick it up on Wednesday than don't order. I've tired to order it and pickup the next day, but they told me that it was only a 1 day deal, it doesn't matter if you have put the order in already.

    • +1

I ordered and paid the $10 delivery. I've been on the look out for a price on 128gb SSD for a few weeks, and the good deals have dried up due to the $ fall, I expect.

    • Thank you lovebug,
Just rang Ultimo and confirmed that this is correct.
      Total $90.71 delivered.

  • Deal is live guys!

  • great news, just ordered one. hopefully, can pick up today. Thanks OP

  • Ordered, thanks OP!

  • Ordered and paid for shipping :)

Haven't not decided whether to put it in my windows laptop or the 2009 macbook that i got from the recycling and fixed up.

  • just got a email from them stating that pick up is tomorrow, as thats when the sale starts. Was hopping to get it today, but i guess i can wait.

  • Does this come with a OS cloning tool? I read somewhere it doesn't come with it.

    • +2

Nope, all you get in the box is the SSD in a plastic tray and an install guide in 12 languages.

      • What's the plastic tray do? Can it fit in a standard HDD slot?

Also, what kind of sata cable do I need to hook it up?

        • will fit all notebook's hdd port as long as it is made after 2007 and standard SATA Desktop data cables should work.

        • Lol, it's a flimsy plastic tray just for some impact protection while shipping the SSD in its box. It does nothing else.

All SATA cables work the same regardless of SATA, SATA2 or SATA3.

  • Just picked mine up at Auburn early, no hassles. 2% CC surcharge though, so heads up.

  • out of stock everywhere in vic by the time i placed an order at noon

you know i get more and more depressed coming to ozbargain than any other websites, maybe sometimes its better not to know than to, i need to take some time off soon

  • well, it looks like cheltenham still have stock. not sure if its a error though.

    • Has no stock, went there physically :/

  • will this work on my XPS17?
