East Coast Cruises (operators of the Triabunna to Maria Island ferry) are making the service free for three months (to boost winter numbers).

Nice one chuqsi
It's a shame it's only for the Winter months. We'll be there a couple of months too late. Just checked the regular fare, and it's $35 for the return trip, so it's a significant saving for those who don't mind the cold.
Sweet, just booked return tickets to Hobart in August with Jetstar's birthday sale too
Where does this actually depart from as I'll be in HBT in July, but have no car?
It's 80-odd km from Hobart. I can't remember right now if there's a bus service, but having a car is definitely more convenient.

bus takes about 1.5 hours, cost $20
Thanks, that certainly makes it a long day, but it is a great offer.
Was only one ferry a day in the morning in November 2012.
Two ferrys a day in summer only, so you have to overnight on the island in your tent.
Can you get off the ferry and walk around the island yourself? Or do you have to pay for a tour?
Yes. Have been talking to a 'local' there about this today. Apparently there are no cars, so it's all on foot.
I don't know about guided tours as it's pretty straight forward to walk around yourself. There are lots of beautiful day walks you can do eg. painted cliffs, fossil cliffs and Bishop and Clerk (you can't walk around the whole island in a day). The other option is to rent bikes before you go and cycle round the island. Staying on the island is a great option and I have previously stayed in the old penitentiary (jail) or camped. As a local it is an amazing spot and worth a visit.
I'm not sure what you are doing on OZbargain? Tasmania is a wonderful place to visit with many FREE or CHEAP and beautiful destinations to visit. If researched and planned properly Tassie makes for a great valued holiday destination.
I didnt even bother replying to the obvious troll. Daddy doesn't pay enough attention to them or something.
Tasmania = awesome nuff said
There was an interesting story on Getaway on the weekend. They have 4 day walking trips around the island staying in tents that are already up. They serve gourmet food and the pace is easy.

Cost
Maria Island 4 day/3 nights walks cost $2250 per person.
I'd suggest taking a tent and camp. Total cost $0
Amazing scenery and walks, we were there last summer and loved it !
