[WA] Free SmartRider Smart-Card for Perth Commuters (Normally $10) @ Transperth InfoCentre

900

For a limited time*, we will be giving out free SmartRiders so everyone can take advantage of free travel. To get your hands on one of these cards just head to a Transperth InfoCentre from 11 December or call us on 13 62 13 and we will mail one out to you.

There is a limit of one card per person, so we will be asking patrons to register their new card. You can do this at the InfoCentre by completing a SmartRider Registration Form or we can take some details from you over the phone.

FAQ:

Q: Do I need one of these new cards to access free travel if I already have a SmartRider?

A: No, if you already have an active SmartRider card then you do not need to get a new card, as your existing SmartRider will automatically have access to the free travel entitlement.

Q: Can I get a free SmartRider from a Retail Sales Outlet (RSO) or a
SmartRider Hub?

A:No, the free SmartRiders are only available from an InfoCentre or by calling 13 62 13. If you use a Retail Sales Outlet or SmartRider Hub then the usual fees apply and Transperth will not reimburse the cost.

Q: What is the value on the card?

A: The card is set to a $0 balance, however, during the free travel period you can travel for free by tagging on and off. If you travel outside of the free travel period (14 December – 5 February inclusively) then your card will go into debit and you will need to add value to the card to continue to travel.

Please note that this card is a Standard SmartRider. If you are entitled to a concession fare then you will need to apply to change the card to a Concession SmartRider. Details can be found here. Please note that some concession cards are issued differently, such as Seniors and Student SmartRiders, so it may not be possible to convert this card.

Q: I've just purchased a new SmartRider, can I be reimbursed for the cost?

A: No, this promotion is for those that do not have a SmartRider card. There is no refund of the $10 or $5 fee that you paid for your card before this promotion commenced. However, your existing SmartRider will entitle you to free travel during the entitlement period.

I think with the $0 balance we can save:

For a family , atleast $9 per day if we had to buy Family fare ticket,
For a individual also, $9 per day.

In addition to Free travel during XMAS holidays, Transperth also has free travel on all Sundays, that means saving throughout the year

        • +6

Passengers must tag on and off at the beginning and end of their journey to access free travel, and parking will also be free at Transperth stations with a SmartRider.

to tag you need a smart rider , which costs $10

        • +4

But you still need a card.
          Keep up jv.

    • +3

Huh smartrider gives you discounted rides. Smartrider more convenient to top up. Smartrider lets you easily link your car to parking at the station. Save a lot more than the alternative. Also travel is also only free with a smartrider so sorry jv i am a fan but this comment is so wrong

live in Perth, transperth is free during this period ONLY if you have a smartrider. If you do not have a smartrider you will pay the full fare. You are still required to TAG on/off I guess for budgeting purposes etc and to gain statistics of usage of transport.

          The card costs $10.
You need a minimum top up of $10

Basically the card costs $20. With this deal the card is given to you for free and you can also use the benefits of the free travel during this period it is quite straight forward really.

            @Lit Homie:

            The card costs $10.

            Not according to their website.

            • +2

              @jv: Huh Transperth Website

What does a Standard SmartRider cost?
              - Purchase cost $10.00
              - Initial minimum value $10.00

you may be checking the wrong website

              • -3

                @Lit Homie: Correct, so it's free…

You pay $10 and get that back as the initial value.

                • +1

@jv: In defence of JV, this is how it used to be. To get a new card it was $10, but it was preloaded with $10 credit. So whilst you had to pay $10 to get one, the card itself was free.

I moved from Perth about 6 years ago so I’m unsure if this has changed.

                • +2

@jv: It's misleading, the minimum all-in cost is $20 (before this deal) which consists of $10 for the piece of plastic and $10 for the minimum balance.

                  • -2

                    @coxymla:

the minimum all-in cost is $20

That's not what the website says…

                    • @jv:

That's not what the website says…

Which website ? Last Friday, at the airport station, I got a card from a machine, which listed two items:

                      Card cost: $10
Minimum load: $10 <<<< I can change this
                      Total $20

So I got a card with $10 of pre-loaded value

                  • +1

@coxymla: When did they change this? Last time I purchased a SmartRider it was $10 which included the card and $10 credit.

$10 for the card seems a bit steep…

                  • +1

@coxymla: I got one a few months ago and this is how it is

                • +1

@jv: Your confusing thinking purchasing the smartrider adds a $10 value to the card. It does not it starts at a $0 balance.

Let's inflate the numbers so it's easier to understand.. I bought a gift card for $100,000 AUD it has $100,000 for use in only one shop this will not be considered free.

Also in context of transperth you buy the gift card for $100,000 then you have to put an additional minimum deposit of $100,000 to use this payment method in the shop which gives you a 10% discount on all clothing.

From your persepctive it is not free, from the actual perspective it is not free.

                    • @jv: Okay so I will go to transperth today and check. a year ago I was asked to put $10 for card and $10 for smartrider. Then we can settle this but either way a non refundable deposit is not free that is what you need to understand.

                      • -1

                        @Lit Homie:

but either way a non refundable deposit is not free

                        It is still credit.

All they are doing is changing it from $10 for $10 credit to $0 for $0 credit…

                        • @jv: Credit is not money. It lacks liquidity, is not a store of value, and is not easily transferable. When exchanging money for credit, the person with AUD must perceive the credits value as worth or equal to keeping the AUD.. otherwise, the exchange doesn't occur. opportunity cost of money is definitely not free.

                          • @Lit Homie:

                            Credit is not money.

                            Yes it is…

I had credit on a Myki, I cancelled it and they gave me my money back.

              • @Lit Homie: No, he's just being deliberately obtuse …. again.

          • +1

@Lit Homie: Yes as a tourist in Perth the free smartrider thing was not actually a free thing consider it would cost $40 for two people to get two smartriders. We just walked on the bus and played dumb ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • jv considering the move to WA?

the card is usually $10. i've bought recently, its $20 in total, $10 for the card and $10 for credit.

You are talking super confidently for someone who is absolutely incorrect

        • -4

I'm just referencing the info from the SmartRider website.

Take it up with the state government there…

        • +6

jv just needs attention at all times, even if it's for being pathetic and stupid.

          • +3

@park: Arguing about this with people who have obviously used the system and know how it works, when not even being from Perth, is a little ridiculous even by JVs standards.

            • +1

@Rick Sanchez: Indeed. I paid $10 for a Smartrider card last month.

    • +1

This is exactly how it is. I recently got one and $20 was charged to my CC and when I tagged on, $10 was showing in travel credit.

I can't believe that the majority of this thread is about this given.

  • +1

This would not happen without an election happening early next year.

    • Free card instead of needing $10 credit? Maybe.

Free public transport? They did this last summer as well a lot further out from election

  • -6

Oh some bias going on here.
OzB run by the WA smotherment?
Where did my neg vote go on this FREE deal?

    • +2

9 people downvoted you, which revoked your vote

      • If only the smotherment worked like this.

        • +2

          Please stop saying smotherment

    • +1

OzB run by the WA smotherment?

Pretty sure it's run by CCP when an EV deal comes up.

  • Whos the CEO.

  • +2

Just let us use a credit card. I assume they’ve faced some challenges launching credit card ticketing, as it’s been in the works for a while.

Regardless, this change benefits everyone. I expect we’ll see queues forming outside the info centers.

    • +1

Just let us use a credit card.

      or just implement Myki

      • +1

Or give it not much longer for the SmartRider overhaul testing to be completed, including the ability to tap/pay via CC. Also SmartRider was introduced before Myki.

    • Was always going to launch Q1 2025 as far as I recall. They did a trial, then a network roll out of the new readers, bingo-bango 2025 just around the corner.

  • +1

What a f#_king run around just to get the card though. In Sydney I could just buy the cards and top up, here I need to fill out forms and get each person to sign.

    Ridiculous

  • +1

Possible to post the free card interstate?

    • try it then let us know, but only 2 options, either walk in or call the number. Best to call n ask.

    • Please share the outcome…

  • +4

    Give up JV

    • Username is confusing in context

  • Nb, now I wonder when WA will do 50c fares like Qld

  • Can you get multiple smartrider cards?

    • There is a limit of one card per person

One free one, which must be registered. You can buy more if you want.

      • I know its officially one but what prevents anyone from getting multiple? Was told they require signature. Don't think ID is verified

        • You have to register it. Name, address, email, phone number, show ID.

          • @wavesgreen: Still can give fake info right. No lD check

            • +1

@sub102: The declaration you sign opens you up to legal action in the case of a false statement, or more likely having all your SmartRiders summarily cancelled. Been known to happen. A.I. cross referencing is getting silly integrated these days, certainly wouldn't be surprised to find Transperth using passenger facial recognition already.

Don't really see the point in having multiple 'burner' SmartRiders anyway.
