  • Toshiba are pretty good, I got their first DVD player in 1997, the SD-3006.

  • +2

Good price, but it's been $49 at Harvey Norman a few times now.

Sadly unlike the ~$89 BDX3200KY, you can't make it region free for Blu-Ray.

  • hows the membership refund process go?
planning to go to costco later this year but didn't do a refund last year.

    • +2

$60 membership fee is for 12 months. Anytime during the 12 months you can ask for a refund if you are not happy. A couple of years ago I did not use my membership much, so got a refund after 11 months. No questions asked.

Also useful if you just want to buy one or two things.

      • Cheers well I'll take them up on it. been a memeber for years and years in another country but they wouldn't do a 1day pass. guess I'll just go in fill the suitcase (literally bringing a suitcase and suitcase scale) fill it up pay and get the membership refund.

        • Your membership is valid at any Costco store worldwide as long as its up to date.
I've used my AU card in the UK and USA.

Says so on all their websites.

Just keep in mind that Costco will ban you from rejoining within 12 months if you ask for a refund.

      • that's an interesting policy thanks for the heads up though.
not like I can afford to go to costco all the time but that 10$ flight deal was just too tempting :D

  • The good thing about buying at Costco is that it is LIFETIME warranty. Silly them, good for consumers.

    • Really? Where do you get that information?

      • +1

Technically not a lifetime warranty, BUT, they have a "Satisfaction" guarantee. So if you are unhappy with the product, they can give you a refund.

There is no time limit mentioned, so people have said they have taken back old products and said they are not satisfied, and received a refund.

EDIT: Should also point out, that this only applies if you maintain your membership.

        • Yep. There are cases where the item was damaged by the carelessness of the consumer, but Costco would still refund them without even inspecting the returned goods.

Costco America had stopped doing it. Australians are still lucky with Costco. Some people are happy to pay (annual fee and) higher prices for appliances / devices at Costco for this reason

So tempted to return my 4yr old iPod because I am not satisfied with its battery life now.

        • +1

I found out about a free apple replacement for my 1st generation iPod Nano. Sent it off and Apple sent me a free 3rd gen Nano. Apparently a little issue with batteries blowing up or something.

        • +1

You got ripped off by Apple. They sent me back a 6th gen when I did it…..

        • My bad. Just googled all the iPod Nano's. It was the 6th gen with the little square touch screen.

          FYI for everyone: http://www.apple.com/au/support/ipodnano_replacement/

    • Well technically you are paying $60 yearly (membership) for the lifetime warranty. The moment you stop, your warranty ceases as well.

  • @ hluu0111 Surely the time will come when they stop doing it here too.

    • if enough people take advantage of it then they prob will.

ALOT of people in the US were returning their 4year old TV's….. which is why they stopped it over there. I'm sure if enough people abuse that policy they will do the same here.

whats this dvd player and blue ray thingy you talk about? i have heard tales of such things from my elders and seen cave paintings. I live in a world of free movie downloads, usb sticks, streaming and pvr so i am curious..

    • +3

I have all those gadgets too, but for $48 I could also play CDs, DVDs and blurays. Especially handy when kids come over and want to watch their favorite film they brought from home.

Also, people seem to forget how much they spend on USB sticks and the loss in quality when converting from bluray to MP4 or MKV.

When you want your mum or dad or relatives overseas to actually see the stuff you send them, you use discs :) …and you don't worry if they never come back because (blank) discs are cheap.

No tech support is needed by you either, because they are super-easy to get going with minimal variables in nearly all set-ups in the modern home. Also, nearly all pre-recorded stuff in shops comes in these 'disc' formats, which incidentally can make nice gifts too.

This ends our tutorial on DVDs and Blu-Rays.

    • the thing that carries the stuff that you just downloaded.

  • Hurry up and open Costco Ringwood!

    • +1

Hurry up and open Costco Brisbane and Everywhere else!

    • Traffic will be a nightmare, once Costco opens.

      • I dunno about Ringwood though, its right next to the eastlink.
Nice for me though, since it is only 3 minutes away… don't need to drive all the way to Docklands.

Once ringwood opens, that will prob be my main grocery shopping place. lol. screw coles and woolies.

I heard a rumor that it will open towards sept to nov, since they are already trying to hire people for that store.

        • Meant to be July.

I bought this player at HN when it was on special for $44 recently… Plastic fantastic, a somewhat generic looking interface, very few output ports, and I wouldn't pay more than $60 for it.

Haven't really tried it out as yet but it plays discs, fast loading… I wouldn't have it as my main living room player, but rather for a bedroom.
