Step 2: Some people voice concerns.
Step 3: Media/internet/people do what they do.
Step 4: Well into the product life cycle Lego state they won't make it any more. They probably were about to stop anyway (was already starting to be a clearance item), but this way they look good.
Step 5: Repeat step 3.

Why bother? It is a non-issue.
They have the right to not stock lego that they find offensive. They do not have the right to make people in other countries with different beliefs stop producing it.
