  • Anyone knows how far can the screen tilt? Can it go 180 degrees?

    • +1

Won't go 180. Just tried a display model and seems similar to most laptops (150-160 degrees???)

      • +1

Beaten by 4 seconds, yeah I was just going to say that it looks like the screen tucks in behind the base meaning 180 degrees would be an impossibility.

    • +2

Took this screenshot from the DSE website, to save you trying to find it just click the link below.

      Shows tilt limits.

  • +2

I'm very tempted to go and get one of these today. Kinda need a Win8 touch for work, raw power isn't required. I wish it was 13.3" screen but beggars can't be choosers for the price I guess.

  • +2

i think 11.6 in screen may be more classed as a netbook…

    • -1

For an underpowered device like this I would agree, but my 11.6 inch laptop has an Intel i7-3740QM processor with 16GB RAM and nVidia Geforce GT650M 2GB GDDR3 Graphics. I would not call that a netbook just because it has a small screen.

  • +1

    Quite tempted, but must resist.

Trying "hard" to think of reasons not to get it:
    - Need to buy an SSD to replace the hard drive (more $$$ needed)
    - Cannot upgrade RAM
    - Intel HD graphics only (not HD3000) - so cannot do hackintosh on it.

But, USB3, touch screen and the price… again.. must resist.

    • Absolutely, if I didn't happen to have a spare SSD (from a recently dead laptop) I probably wouldn't be as keen. But I do, and I am, and both local stores have stock… The forces are pushing me to buy one :)

RAM and GPU are real limitations but I'm thinking the SSD will take some load off, and for light use it should just be able to scrape by as usable.

      • Much harder for you to resist then (you have a spare SSD). SSD makes a big difference.

      • This is good keep telling me why this is no good cause i am so close to doing the haggle dance with OW/Jb/HN……sombody save me from this bargin!!

My main use was going to be:
        -Travel laptop
        -Watch movies
        -Surf net
        -Use itunes
-Play BF3 via orgin (not going to happen, right)

        • OW don't seem to stock this model, at least it's not listed on their online site. JB/Binglee do, and probably HN too.

          Do it!

The only real thing that makes me sad about it is RAM. 2GB, what the hell is that in 2013. But for browse/light office docs, it should be fine.

    • delete

    • it's HD2000 which is the same thing as 3000 with some disabled "cores"

      • It is just intel HD graphics, not even HD2000.

Nothing wrong with intel HD graphics.. it is just I need HD3000 or HD4000 for Hackintosh… I know at this price that is not feasible. It is just an "excuse" for me not to get this ultrabook.

    • there is also an asus tf810c available for under $900 that is a hybrid tablet, windows pro, docking keyboard with battery and stylus and case

      only downside is atom processor

i bought one for my sister for uni for $1099 so this is a bargain

  • +1

i have this laptop - first thing u wanna do is put a ssd in this…. soooooooo slow… u have no idea how slow on a 5400rpm drive… i nearly returned it :|

    • Thanks for this… just as I thought… so real cost would be $431.6 ($97 for a Samsung 840 120GB SSD) for me. I think that's enough for me not to buy it (still tempted though, if only I have a spare SSD).

  • -1

F501A for $348 looks a lot better if I'm not mistaken?

    Key Features
Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo B970 Processor
    15.6" LCD Display
    4GB RAM
    500GB HDD
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
White with silver dots on the outer surface

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XC8589/asus-f501a-xx143h-not…

EDIT: That's the catch, no touch on this model :(

    • +1

It's also a different class. 15.6" , 2+KG , and plastic chassis. Larger laptops are typically cheaper for a given spec because you're sacrificing portability and weight

      • Yeah i compare this closer to a tablet, simillar portability about same functions but a bit more.

Would be either a tablet or this for me.

        • Exactly the conundrum I was in. Was looking at $250 + keyboard/case so call it $280 for a tablet. Another $50, got this instead. But if I didn't have a spare SSD I probably would have shopped differently.

  • How long can the battery last for this laptop just for browsing and some MS Office task?

    • around 4 hrs

      • then I'll give it a pass.

    • I cannot recommend this laptop with battery life is a priority. It also charges really slowly

  • Does it have bluetooth?

    • yes

    • I thought it didn't have Bluetooth. Would be worth checking. I was going to add something like this…..

Dual Mode Bluetooth 4.0 Micro USB Dongle Low Energy Broadcom BCM20702 Adapter
      http://bit.ly/10ohnZH

But standard Bluetooth can be added for under $2 via USB.

  • At least it has Intel HD graphics.
The cedar trial range only has GMA and has major issues with windows 8.

Glad to know there are now alternatives in the intel 847 range. I guess I'll have to take a closer look later.

  • I'm going to my local store to check if there are any laptops around 12inch that are cheaper with no touchscreen.

Thanks guys for the heads up on the sale today.

I'm on the train now, but I just noticed that there is no disc drive with the touchscreen model.
The i3 which was on sale 14inch would have been a better deal, but is mostly sold out in my area.

  • I bit the bullet! Unfortunately I won't have time to test and help influence others. Lots of work to catch up on, won't even be unpacking this until tomorrow at the earliest.

8 left at the Erina NSW store. They don't seem to be moving too quick.

  • Good price on a decent laptop. I would have considered it if I didn't just buy Samsung Chromebook :)

    • Yeah chrome book good but limited applications can be put on right..?

Like you can't put iTunes on it?

      • Yep, you are right :) I have all my music on Google Play Music, so it doesn't matter to me, but I can see it causing problems for other users.

  • Better to spend a bit more and get a real laptop, not this glorified netbook.

  • Went in store and took a drive, couldn't find blue tooth. Did a search on it and no blue tooth.

    So maybe no blue tooth?

    • Bluetooth is not a big issue (if it is missing). Just get a $2 USB dongle on feeBay. Also, nowadays, most phones support wifi transfer.

    • -1

You probably should have paid for the drive.

  • Bombed out, store was closed by the time I got there, only harvey norman was open so I scored a HP Pavilion 14-B023AU for $358. It has slightly better or worse than the 847 depending on what it is processing.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Celeron-847-Notebook-Proc…
    versus
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-E-Series-E1-1200-Notebook-P…

I didn't need touch, and this also has USB 3.0…

I wasn't sure if I could collect in store and then pickup on monday since tomorrow is definitely closed.

    • Can't you click and collect ? Tomorrow?

      • I'm not sure, lol. anyway, it's a bit late now.

Dick smith closed at 4pm, harvey norman 5pm.

Dick smith is definitely cheaper though, but in the end I got a bigger screen.

  • What's the difference between s200e and this as jb will match but have s200e.?

  • This might be useful for anyone looking to order after the stores have closed:

Reserved items held for up to 24 hours… <<< They will only hold it until tomorrow, when no doubt the offer expires…

    From:
    http://dicksmith.com.au/help/click-and-collect-content

So, I'm not sure if the offer has technically expired or not.

  • +1

Ok also bit bullet got one.

What ae people taking/taken off as i am sure there is bit of bloat that can go.

Or what accessories you getting cheap of ebay?

    • eSATA to USB3 cable / adaptor (assuming that ultrabook does not have eSATA).
Bluetooth dongle (assuming that ultrabook does not have bluetooth).
      HDMI cable.

      can't think of anything else…

      • Yeah i think i might get same bluetooth as above poster linked to on ebay.

Got read up on windows 8 now, i think we can now buy window phone apps for it now or at least games from the market place?

  • +1

Although I didn't buy this laptop thanks to OP I have a new laptop which was 30% off. Someone accidentally broke my screen and I had borrowed one I need to return so this could not have been more perfect timing.

  • i got this a few months ago, was alright though my touchscreen kept popping out, and out. got to the point where half of it came right off. I accidently must of slammed it a little hard closed and the whole screen shattered. personally i didnt think it was hard but orwell, was cheap. but other than that great laptop.

    • only 3 months old did you try claim on the warranty?

  • faaaaaar out bought a non-touch enabled one from office works for 374 !!! fuming!!!!

    • Return it

      • how mang, its from office works if htat makes any difference?

        • officeworks has no questions asked return policy

  • +2

Wow. Now back up to $478.
Hard to believe they sell any at that price.

    • Not sure of the exact differences, but Bing Lee has the Asus S200E-CT209H (VivoBook S200E) advertised online for $398

      • I think someone said they're pretty much identical. Surely something is different but it's probably very minor like bluetooth inclusion/exclusion or some such. $398 is probably getting towards the ceiling of what one of these is worth. Then again I remember being prepared to spend $500 for this same $334 laptop in December, decided to post pone it at the time and glad I did :)

        • According to discussion on whirlpool they are the same

          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2064373

DSE does sells both, the s200e was not discounted whlst the f202 was

JB has the f202 but cleared it out and selling display mdel at the two jb i wen to, they also do the s200e and i got that one, priced matched to DSE f202.

They are exactly the same i think unless people have found bluetooth on their f202?

        • This may be the answer to this question. Posted in USA where the F202 is called X202.

"It has been noted the X202e has 2 antennas but the S200e only one."

  • Does anyone know how to create a recovery disc for the system?

    • For this laptop you have a recovery partition. The windows 8 key is apart of the uefi. You can download a specific windows 8 rtm 64-bit iso and install it via usb using unetbootin for instance.

    • Not sure if this is any help, just read it minutes ago. Doesn't relate to my needs but maybe it's some help to you?

      "{Control Panel} {Recovery} {Create Recovery Drive} Check off {Copy the recovery Partition}
You need a 16GB usb drive for this."

      X202E/F202E owners thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/…

  • I've hit a brick wall. Kinda dopey of me. I thought I had one spare Windows 8 serial but it turns out I used it on another PC.

So I have to figure out the best way to transfer the Win8 on HDD to my SSD lol.

    • any online guide on how to replace HDD to a SSD?

      • I can tell you how I physically did it. Although I'm currently stuck without Win8 on the SSD :)

There are 9 screws on the back case to remove.

Opening the case is tricky, I reckon if you are rough it'll snap so take your time. I used an old credit card (it gets a bit messed up so dont use a current one), carefully jam it in near the front. Slowly pry down the side and around the back. Eventually there's not a lot more you can do other than to rip it off. Do it as gently as possible.

Remove the HDD sized black plastic sheet with foam. You'll find the HDD underneath (bet you weren't expecting that!)

        Remove 3 black screws.

The HDD is 7mm, my SSD is 9mm. My solution - Remove casing from the SSD and install it naked. Fits perfect. I slipped some folded paper underneath the SSD as it felt wobbly, that fixed it. Then reapplied the plastic foam on top and it feels nice and snug.

        10-15min job, playing it safe.

        • cool, now you got to get Win 8 again

        • Any suggestions? :)

Some are saying the serial is hard coded into the UEFI and I can just install any untouched Win8 ISO and it'll work? But something doesn't sound complete about that approach…

        • you'll need an esata to usb cable to connect your ssd to your laptop. you could then use a cloning program to copy your hdd over to your ssd - this is preferably done before you take your hdd out. some ssd manufacturers provide cloning software (eg Samsung SmartMigration) with their ssds.

        • +1

Normally, if you purchased a branded laptop and have the recovery DVD, you don't need to specify the key. The reason is that in the BIOS (regardless of classic or UEFI), it has a manufacturer's ID (Dell, HP, Asus etc…). When Microsoft OS detects it, it will let you activate (because it knows those makers always sell a laptop with a M$ OS).

However, if you don't have the recovery DVD, it could be harder. Most of them put the recovery image as a separate partition on the hard drive (to save cost), so if you could somehow boot from the original drive externally (now that you put SSD as the main drive), and start the recovery process, it should install Win 8 for you.

Worst case, you could re-use a Win8 serial on multiple PCs (I think 3 is fine). You do have a legit case here. You do have a proper Win8 license, just don't have an OEM version of Win8 disc (coz. the OEM tried to save cost).

        • +1

It works. You will need a specific windows 8 rtm 64-bit iso. I'll post info if I can find it. Believe me. I have done it many many times. I tried using the windows 7 usb maker and that did not work for me. Unetbootin though

EDIT: The iso name is en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440 you can find it via torrents.

  • Netsurfer & Hahuh: Thanks guys, overnight I got the en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.

Didn't have high hopes on it doing much but sure enough it works! Detected my genuine product key automatically which is indicated by the "OEM" at the end of it. So it really does store itself in the BIOS/UEFI. Who'd have thought Microsoft could be this smart! :)

No recovery, cloning or copying. It just works!

Very impressed with the touch ability of this laptop, and with SSD it flies. Not fond of the keyboard & touchpad but maybe they'll grow on me. Just installing all the drivers from the eSupport folder now.

    • @Click_It

Yes it is a great laptop and a steal for the price. Just wish the battery life would be better. Oh well. I put a 120GB 840 in mine and it is zippy as heck. 2 sec resume from sleep. 7 second boot.

    • can someone PM me the torrent link to en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440 ?

I cant find it on site I normally use but did find "en_windows_8_x64_dvd_By_allinone4.iso"

Can I ask as never done before, how do you get the ISO to load on ASUS after replacing the HDD ?

I am guessing you run it through BIOS and then load up Win 8 via USB or SD card?

Also in doing so, you lose all the pre-loaded ASUS bloatware?

      • @bargain

<s>If you search the fullstring in google, it will be the first result.</s> Wow how quickly things change. I dunno man. It is pretty shitty of these manufacturers to not include the fricken software. Good luck finding it. PS: Screw you M$ for the dmca. We are compensating for your mistake

You will need a program to create a live usb drive. I used Unetbootin with succession.

When you start the laptop, you can spam F2 where you can define boot options.

If you have never installed windows it is quite easy. Simply click next and agree to the terms. You will need to choose 'custom' for the installation type. (Upgrade should be greyed out)

You will not have any Asus apps loaded by default.

  • I have not opened mine yet. Can anyone who bought one confirm if it has bluetooth or not?

    • None that I could find. Best bet would be to buy a USB one on fleebay.

      • yeah no bluetooth

I bought a $5 usb adapter of ebay, $5 cause its version 4.0 whilst version 2.0 is $2

  • Can anyone reccomend some good games or apps from the Windows store?

Also will any of the modern games run okay on this COD, BF ?

    • You will struggle to run modern games on the built in intel graphics. Maybe if you dial everything down it might work

  • OK, based on comments above I have purchased a 256Gb Samsung 840Pro SSD. Looking forward to the sweet SSD speed (Once I follow the install feedback above - hopefully not too difficult)

Will be a great piece of kit for under $550.

    • Who u get the ssd from?

      • I took advantage of the Shopping Express deal.
        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/98703

256gb Samsung 840Pro is $240, but you will earn $25 cash from TrendMicro. Pay $295 upfront, get $80 cash back. End cost $215. Good deal for the latest ssd that should be super fast and may also improve battery life.

        $215 ssd deal plus the $334.60 laptop = $549.60

A lot cheaper than an ultrabook and capable for what I want it for.

  • Bought this from dse. Installed antivir and zone alarm. Now it won't load any apps, even control panel, so can't reset to factory settings without a usb with win 8 on it! what do i do?

  • Hi subscribers! I am going to replace the HDD with an SSD. Can i just clone or ghost the image of the original HDD to the SSD? (My Samsung 840Pro came with data migration software) Or do i need to install windows on the SSD as per the comments above?
    Sorry for the newbie question.

    • Used the Samsung data migration software and all programs came across to the SSD no problems. Also pretty easy to pop the case off the bottom, just undo the screws and jimmy off with an old itunes card (or credit card).

Just be aware there are 3 different size screws.
      Small for the front
      Long for the centre
      Mid for rest.

also note, one of the centre rear screws also holds in the hard drive, so when you remove the bottom cover note which 3 screws are holding the harddrive.

With the SSD this is a cheap speedy little netbook alternative (with 256Gb SSD for under $550).

Also added this (did not want to deal with a no-name ebay brand)….
      http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Pho…

      • cool, so the Smasung software was abke to reload windows 8 as well?

        • Yes. Grabbed full windows 8 and all the Asus programs. Supposedly only works with the Samsung SSD. May be a reason to buy a Samsung SSD over others?

I did not have to type in any code/key for win 8 just copied and put in notebook.
