That's cheap for a shopfront, but I'd still recommend a 10" model with a 6 cell battery, from experience. Like the eee pc 1000 series.

The newer one is probably a lot better. HP 1000 v 2133

Ht.com.au also has the higher specced model for $699 which has 2GB ram, 160GB and Vista Business.

Also I reckon the 2133 mini is pretty good, while the processor isn't that great the screen is 1280x800 which trounces the 10in model which are all 1024x600

  • New model 2140 with atom is out in the US http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/321957-321957-…

Not such a good deal when AusPost had this exact same one for $499 three months ago. but good enough at this point in time!

Basically identical to Mini 1001TU, DSE has very good bundle deal on it at the moment.

  • Yeah, the C7 1.6GHz is not to be confused with the Atom 1.6GHz.

Quite good performance (the Atom 1.6GHz isn't much better than a Celeron 900MHz) but sucks more power.

Unless you're a big fan of the design, don't bother.

  • I have just been reading the comments and thought I would ask for a bit of advice. I am planning to buy my 12 y.o. son a laptop for his birthday. I am wanting something small and cheap that does everything a young teenager would expect in a computer. Any suggestions? I am happy to spend up to $600. Thanks.

I haven't got any particular bargains in mind but a couple of pieces of advice.

If you get a netbook make sure it has Windows XP - Vista will be unpleasant on 1GB of RAM. Also for a netbook as a primary PC an external DVD drive will be needed. If it's to be a primary PC I wouldn't recommend any less than the 10" ASUS 1000H recommended in comment #1 (or the MSI Wind) as otherwise it will be too small.

Unfortunately, prices for laptops haven't really gone down recently (with the weak AUD). If there's any chance your son will want to play more than the most basic games, he'd be much better off with a desktop at that budget.

      Some suggestions:

      $499: ALDI Akoya E1210, U100 clone, 3x2200ma-cells, 10.2", 160GB HDD, 60day satisfaction guarantee
      $529: ASUS EEE 900HA, 4x2600ma-cells, 8.9", 160GB HDD http://www.mln.com.au
      $589: MSI Wind U100, 6x2600ma-cells, 10.2" 120GB HDD http://www.tecscomputers.com.au/notebook.html
      $599: ASUS EEE 1000H, 6x2200ma-cells, 10.2", 160GB HDD, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/9750

      Sizes: http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/21616-A4-paper-v…
(900HA is the most portable.. but tradeoff is smaller screen & keyboard than 10.2" netbooks)

ALDI, Officeworks and/or Harvey Norman have these for viewing. More cells=more battery life (the after purchase surprise is replacement 6 or 9 cell sell for ~ $100 on EBAY). These are all HDD units.. faster and more capacity than SSD units. Plenty of room for music, videos & games.

  • Thanks for you help, it gives me somewhere to start :)

    • Note: if you are looking for a primary PC, you can get full size notebooks with better specs for the same or lower price …

But if you already know you are definitely looking for a mini notebook, don't worry about the bigger ones :)

    • Actually, JBhifi is doing a special for Acer Aspire One with 1GB ram 160 GB HDD and 8.9" screen (not sure the CPU) for $482 after cash back. I rekon it's a solid netbook.

      • Aspire One = 8.9" screen in a 10.2" chassis (WHY?), and only 3-cell battery. IMHO the true 10.2" ALDI Medion Akoya E1210 is better value for money at $499. If you don't like it you can take it back within 60 days to get a full refund.

        • Hi Ruraro :) where can I read about the 60 day moneyback trial? :)

Last I read, Medion only has 1 Australian service centre, in Sydney, which is something for non Sydney siders to consider. (ie shipping and time to send your notebook to Sydney, if it ever needs a service)

  • This isn't really that good a deal, it's the same price as the asus model with the 160gb hdd, and has vista. People need to only post good deals on laptops, not the bad deals.

Yes.. it is smaller, has slower CPU (Via C7), and lower battery life than the asus model BUT.. the 2133 has a 1280x768 8.9" screen. This is a RARE feature and may be important to some. All the current crop of 10.2" netbooks have 1024x600 screens. Choices choices.

      • Bingo!! I find the 1024x600 a bit limiting. Also the 2133 is actually quite OK when running a Linux distro too. Reading up on the 2140 is the model to get especially as it will be optionable with a 1366x768 (mmmm 16:9) display too.

        • Yup.. a 1024x600 requires workarounds to normal flow, eg: some app that will be missing it's <OK> <cancel>. Penta has the 2140 listed, but they are the 1024x576 models.. and wait for it, cost $855 and $1155.

So from what I can gather the 2133 is the ONLY netbook class computer with a 1280x768 8.9” screen.

    • Well if it gets positive votes then members of OzBargain think it's a good deal, if it gets negs they think its bad….it called democracy!

  • I rent a PO BOX and received a voucher for an extra 10% of any product in the current catalogue which applies to this deal taking the price down to about $540.

I would scan the voucher and post it but the original must be surrended to receive the discount so it would be of no use plus you must use it at the post office you have your PO BOX at.

BUT if you know someone with a PO BOX you might be able to convince them to let you use their voucher?

  • Nice idea, Chris. Consensus seems to be that the screen is the one thing going for the 2133… some of us may wish we could get the Atom guts into the 2133, then this would be a great netbook. :)

Others with the 2133 are happy - just beware it runs hot and is relatively slower than Atom-based nebooks.

Chris, pls report on your success with the voucher for this and how you find the 2133! :)

    • The ATOM guts in the 2133 = The Mini 2140 high-res (1366x768). Expect it to cost > $900 when it arrives approx March. The basic Mini 2140 1024x600 is selling now at Penta for $855!!

Someone on tradingpost.com.au in Sydney has a 60GB Mini 2133 as new for $400.
