I don't know anything about the series or even if this is a good deal, but +1 for your enthusiasm. :)

    • +2

Oro? You need to watch it! Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) is epic.

    • your life isnt complete

    • If you are into anime, watch the series. I'm not into the Samurai X (2 episodes?) - it's too serious; I love the series better - fun to watch + cool/serious fighting scenes

  • Did not know that it was coming to Aus too! Any idea what the Limited Edition has over the regular one? So gonna get this one :D

    • +5

      Limited Ed = English subtitle

      • +2

I thought you were joking. But going by a comment below I'm no longer sure.

Australian release must include subtitles, surely. Unless there is no such thing as the standard edition, then this must be trolling. Right?

  • Apparently the film itself is pretty good as-well going by the reviews. I'm a massive fan of the show.

  • I've seen the series and the anime movies but not this, (I'm guessing more like Live Action Movie)so thank you! Warning Huge anime fan here!

    • +2

      you NEED to watch it

unlike all the other live action japanese movies

this one isnt heavily focused on CGI. they use alot of wire effects to do stunts so its alot more seamless and realistic

its not 100% but very close to the original. It also includes some of my favourite actors as well

The female leads were miscast tho (they should have swapped roles)

the timing of this production couldnt have been better

      • +1

I'll have to now! After so many positive comments… Deathnote's been the only live action I've liked so far, lets hope this is even better! My life will be complete when they bring out Bleach in eng dub but for now… Kenshin will do :)

        • +1

You liked the Death Note live action?

        • I did… not as much as the animes, but so far it "had" been the best Live Action I'd seen…

        • True, it wasn't bad. Only live action I've seen so nothing to compare it to.

      • Furythree: You were right! I bought it and took it home and watched it immediately!!!! Thank you for that, had me and husband hooked… and apparently they're already working on the sequel :D

  • +2

Now all we need is a buy 2 get one free or similar kind of sale!

  • Huge fan!!

movie was a big hit apparently in asian countries, but for me the anime (cartoon) series is much better.

  • Big fan of the anime as well. A plus from me!

  • +3

I was a bit sceptical initially about a live action remake. Watched 10 minutes and it got me hooked and by the end, it blew me away. They got it down pat. Basically covered the first 15(?) episodes of the anime. (I don't think the following are spoilers but beware anyway) The fake hitokiri(twist), gattling gun, the hypnosis guy (I forget his name). Its all there. I loved it.

I got a friend from work to watch it. He knew nothing about the anime. He loved it too.

    Definite +1.

    • +5

the actor got kenshins role down pat too

      oro? orororororo?

  • +2

Watched this and in my humble opinion is probably the best remake of an anime series. Even my wife who's not into anime absolutely LOVED this and wants to watch it again!!

    • Yes best anime remake. Nowhere near the shitty dragon ball!!!

      • Totally agree, dragon ball was dragon punched!!

    • -1

      Hmmm.. I'm still skeptical.

Everything that's a live action adaption of a much lengthier anime series normally turns out rubbish.

  • Anime and OVA's are brilliant, never got the chance to see this, will probably pick it up now.

  • +3

Sorry if I piss on anybody's parade. I love this series too and I imported the Limited Edition Blu-ray from Japan at a high price.

But anyway, there doesn't seem to be anything Bargain-worthy or Limited Editiony here. Unless you're comparing it to the Japanese release which:

    • is ALWAYS ridiculously expensive when it comes to DVDs and Blu-rays
    • usually doesn't include English subtitles anyway so it's a moot comparison

$29.98 seems pretty much RRP. I'm pretty sure you can get this much cheaper at a later date, so I don't see a bargain here.

The single extra feature listed seem to be the same extra feature as the regular edition Japanese Blu-ray, so I don't see how this is Limited Edition - even JB's listing doesn't make mention of it being special. The alternate foil artwork maybe?

    So yeah. Sorry guys.

    • +1

limited edition is the english subs

  • the movie is only ok…. compare to anime
The kenshin is not as "pretend stupid" compare to anime…..

    • +2

      he is pretend stupid

just the anime switches between comedy and serious too quickly and harshly

the live action (being real people) was more realistic and natural

he demonstrated pretend stupid and transitioned to serious perfectly when needed

    • +1

the anime he was dumbed down - but the OVA/movies were like the live action…

glad to hear that the movie did well enough for them to make a sequel.

      • There's going to be a sequel!? AWESOME!

  • +1

Anime is less gory too. Final battle between kenshin and "mummy" man is EPIC!

  • +1

I miss Kenshin. Last time I read the manga was in my high school time (long time ago YIKE!) Would like to buy it but haven't had Blueray player yet. :(

  • +1

I liked the anime & manga series, I spent my childhood with it but the movie suffered a similar symptoms like most Japanese movies.

Over exaggerated expressions displayed particularly from the villains, irrelevant scene that unrelated to the main storyline and character portrayal that really out of place (Saito Hajime become a smug bakufu policeman? Sanosuke is so random)

Fortunately, Kenshin character is spot on and Kaoru is quite cute (a bit too young), the action scenes was good and the story pretty much similar to the anime.

If you love the anime or the manga, definitely you won't miss this.
But if you're looking for a Japanese samurai action movie… you'll probably will like it.

    • +1

I think they introduced too many characters in this one and didn't have time to flesh many of them out. But I do think they did a pretty good job of combining several story arcs from the comics into a single storyline without it becoming incoherent.

Probably should've saved some characters to be introduced in sequels.

  • +1

Good movie. Saw it on the big screen but I gotta get this. I'd love to see more live action Kenshin movies.

  • +1

Awesome! I didn't know JB was going to have exclusive art. I just bought this and picked up the following title for cheap, Beatles Down Under DVD for $3.98!

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/musical-karaok…

Is this worth creating a new deal for?

  • Good movie. Had no idea it was out here so went and picked it up on my lunch break :)

    +1

  • I had this in my hand on Saturday during JB's 20% off sale and wasn't sure about it as I couldn't check the pricing on my phone at the time. Ah well - I'll wait for the next 20% sale that comes around every month at JB now.

  • +1

Sorry if you don't mind telling me what is this deal original price and how much saving?

    • Technically, it's not really a deal per se, since you can also get it at a few other B&M stores sub-$35 or cheaper on ebay for $29.85! Fair price, yes; bargain, no!

Like the price, the movie itself is decent but hardly Earth-shattering…I guess it's a case of being able to spot the hardcore anime fans by the upvotes here! ;)

    • cheapest on ebay is $33.60.
already checked that before posting this deal, i also checked a bunch of other stores too.
i don't just post a deal without checking :) but as stated, it's not a big bargain, though still a saving of a few bucks getting it locally :)

movie clocks in at 130minutes+ by the way
& im so proud that so many people like rurouni kenshin :), i honestly thought it wasn't that popular

      • Yeah, sorry my bad, that was the DVD version.

  • I bought this from iTunes. It's $24.99 for the SD version and $29.99 for the HD Version (or Rent for $6-$7)
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/movie/rurouni-kenshin/id60578847…

  • So I just received my blu-ray copy in the mail however when it arrived it was not sealed :/

    Is the same for others?

  • I paid $35 - $45 for each of the DVDs of the anime series from amazon as they came out and each only had 4 eps, that's how much I liked it. Obviously this was prior to ozb, I would never pay that now! Definitely will check this out, thanks!
