I don't think $13.95 is a great price for this. $8 at MSY and I can't be bothered looking at ebay.

Those are cheap and nasty and would definitely not meet the specifications for cat 6.

+1 from me. Cat6 is a very tight specification that is hard to comply with. It isn't like HDMI where any cable will do as long as there are copper a certain amount of wires at such and such a gauge in a sleeve. It requires specific crosstalk, specific twisting of pairs inside the sleeve, etc. By having everything such specific signals can be sent both ways concurrently on each wire and read. I'm not saying go buy a "monster" gold plated, leather braided, blah blah blah cable. I'm just saying try to get something with a brand name so at the least if it's dodgy you can leave behind some negative feedback that sticks to them.

  • unless DS's is your only option i cant see why you would buy cables from them? that being the case i cant see how this can be a postworthy "deal" its more expensive than the other options

  • I am just wondering how much do 305 m of CAT5e cable sell for if they are good quality and meet the standards.

What is the difference between CAT 6 and CAT 5e cable?

CAT 6 gigabit speeds while CAT 5e does close to it if i read it write I might be wrong anyone else care to explain the difference.

      CAT-5E: $80 ex GST
      CAT-6: $115 ex GST

What is the difference between CAT 6 and CAT 5e cable?

Is it that hard to type your question into the search box?

There's another difference that you probably won't discover until you try to purchase a reel of cable.

Cat5 and Cat5e cable is readily available in both stranded and solid copper wire. The solid wire is for wiring your house, the stranded cable is to make "patch" cables which go from you appliances to a router, or to a wall-mounted jack.

Cat6 cable, supplied as a reel, seems to only be available in solid. Nobody seems to sell stranded Cat6 cable, unless you buy a pre-made patch cable. Sometimes that is really annoying and expensive, like when you discover you need a 20m patch cable!

If you make your own patch cables using the solid cable, they damage easily if they are flexed a few times - often one of the cores breaks.

Anyone know where I can buy a reel of STRANDED Cat6 cable?

Ethernet cables - still more reliable than wifi after all these years.

Exactly! That's why I wired my entire house up when I built. Wi-Fi is still crap for any large data movement / copying.

      • Sound investment decision. You can't go wrong with those humble blue snakes powering your network!
