  • Aw… I bought a n54l and some ram on Monday.

Oh well, it's only $10. Still a pretty good price.

    • Ordered from these guys 2x 4GB Kingston Value RAM at $26 each late last night; saw it advertised on this post for $24; thought about how to go about claiming a $4 refund, but lucky little me… clicking the link still shows the RAM at $26! ;o) A day in the life of an OzBargainer!

On a serious note, been very impressed with ShoppingExpress' service!

  • Any recommended sources on how to set up one of these things?

    • What are you planning on using it for?

      • From what I understand, it can be used for document backups and serve as a media center. Plan to use it for more of the latter, but a little of both.

        • I bought the N40L recently from Shopping Express. Then I added the 6450 card to get HDMI audio and video out of the server. The server does not come with a sound card.
I installed Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 and XBMC. XBMC takes the load off the CPU when playing video.
I'm now on the hunt for a TV tuner. Will probably go with a USB jobbie from MSY.

        • I got a PCI-E twin digital tuner (make use of the spare x1 PCI-e slot). Win7 HTPC

          http://www.avermedia.com/product/productdetail.aspx?id=470

        • Go a Sony PlayTV (the PS3 accessory).
Works great, usb dual tuner with single input.

There are a couple of threads on Whirlpool.net.au and Overclockers.com.au. It's pretty easy though, these things have been built with the enthusiast in mind; the manual it comes with explains the basics well.

      • I'm a long time 'nix user, and bought an N40L late last year. If one is prepared to spend a day setting it up it becomes a much better and less expensive deal than any comparable NAS device.

I run mine stock standard with 5 HDDs on Ubuntu server LTS.

The only thing I don't like and haven't been able to overcome is that on a reboot, when a USB drive is plugged in, it will insist on booting from the USB device. BIOS settings seem to have no effect It's a PITA on the odd occasion the N40L needs to be rebooted.

Other than that, it's brilliant. I'll replace my 3yo QNAP with a N54L later this year.

    • They make superb home servers, media centers. Only downside is HP N40L server has no standby mode, it cannot sleep. Perhaps the N54l is better?

ShoppingExpress is doing a great job of bundling all you need for a home theatre PC or a NAS.
If you don't want HDMI sound, you'll also need a USB sound card ($5 off ebay) and a remote control or wireless keyboard.

      • Are you sure? Mine sleeps even when I don't want it to! lol

        • No Sleep, Probably you got it on "Turn Off Display"

      • +1

The only difference between the N40L and the N54L is the CPU, ie. you still won't be able to use Sleep.

Hibernate works well though but I used to occasionally get errors at resume saying the hiberfil.sys is corrupt press Enter to delete and continue…..pretty pointless on a headless server, (WHS2011).

There's a Microsoft KB article that provides a hotfix and CLI commands that will add a timeout for this error so that after x seconds the boot will continue:

Try the link below plenty of good info. I used it when I built my 2 N36L HTPC's.

Bought a N54L last time it was on sale and built it up with a bunch of fancy parts.

Now to find a use for it. (typical Ozbargain purchase)

    • File Server and HTPC?

  • Is there a way to make it turn on and off automatically with the CMOS or similar? (N40L)

    • +2

I've got a N40L and there is no automatic wake up setting in the BIOS. There is WOL available though and that does work ok.
A DDWRT router can be set to wake the N40L at a certain time for example.

    • thanks for sharing your experience guidedlight - you are truly as your username suggested.

Thanks Op. I have just purchased the N40L. Have been waiting for an offer for sometime and this is it.

  • +2

Was thinking about the SanDisk SSD 240GB, any thoughts on this SSD?
    Any shipping discounts OP?

    • Hi mrkyle,

We already(always) gave our best offer - BEST price by a fair amount and IN STOCK, you might want to checkout staticice for the Sandisk SSDs:

120GB selling More than $100 on MOST places, Greenbox IT have it at $97 with 0 stock

240GB selling lowest $175.80 with 0 stock again

      • The shipping costs kill most of the value though. $175 with insured shipping (wouldn't go without insurance when shipping an SSD). Or I can go into MSY today/this weekend and buy one for $179.

OP - I agree you have a great price and I was very interested, but with shipping, there's no point. Maybe if I was buying multiple items it would be better value.

Edit: Decided I was probably whinging. When you compare this price to all others besides MSY, it rocks. So unless you're near an MSY, this is the price to beat! Well done OP.

      • dont get me wrong prices are great, just it would be greater :)

Picked up a N54L (to add to my 2xN36L's), also picked up 2x4GB ECC for it.

Will put into it 4x4TB Hitachi 7200 RPM drives and a OCZ Vertex 2 SSD, then install Solaris 11.1 and make a 3rd NAS device for home usage.

Annoying that the 2x8GB ECC memory kits were out of stock, otherwise I would have been tempted to put 16GB in the machine.

    • May I ask why you feel the need for ECC ram?

      • If your motherboard is ECC capable, may I ask why not?

        • ECC ram is more expensive than non-ECC and IMO unnecessary unless you're running high intensity and/or highly critical data center type processes. Most memory errors are "hard" type errors i.e. physical defects and therefore ECC won't be able to fix it anyway. Also ECC ram has a 2-5% performance penalty against non ECC ram.

        • +1

I run Solaris 11 on the NAS's (they are all dedicated to NAS duties, nothing else running) which uses ZFS and is a 100% software solution.

Without ECC memory rare random bit flips caused by cosmic rays or by faulty memory can go undetected. If this were to occur ZFS (or any other filesystem) will write the damaged data to disk and be unable to automatically detect the corruption.

But when ECC memory reports an issue ZFS is able to cope with it and ensure that damaged data doesn't get written to disk.

    • +4

May I ask why you feel the need for 3 NASs?

      • Because NAS #1 filled up, so I built #2, then it filled up and I will build #3 ;)

It's less time and effort (and almost the same cost) to build a whole new NAS (especially with the HP Microservers) than upgrade the disks in a given NAS.

        • +5

          That's a lot of porn. :P

    • Annoying that the 2x8GB ECC memory kits were out of stock <=== If demand is there, we will keep some stock.

      • How quickly can you get stock in, maybe I could alter my order, if it's coming in quickly?

        • hi klif-e,

It wouldn't be quick, as we need to see the demand in here first, then we need to find out the exact ETA of the next batch coming in & keep some stock with us before we can offer a promotion price (according to supplier - no ETA yet).

        • That's a shame.

        • yup…it just ain't a regular stock item at supplier's site yet, perhaps when it gets more popular or we have a bulk order regularly to prove them wrong :).

  • Just pulled the trigger and bought a SanDisk SSD and the N40L. There goes my lunch money for the next month :P

Problem with my order though, the shipping address seems to be all mucked up?? What do I need to do to get this corrected?

    • Hi ronyronron,

Sorry for the late reply….just saw your query. If you think there's some issue on your delivery address,
Please call us ASAP at 02-83388899 with your Order number ready (starts N00XXXXX) so we can assist you before we dispatch your order.

  • damn just got that ssd, wish i waited.

  • Sweet just bought the 240gb Sandisk ssd was going to get a 120gb but the price was pretty good. Also got the 2tb seagate hdd both were delivered for $8.75.

  • Love my N54L, still too slow but :( even with 8gb and an SSD, wish she had about 2x the CPU power.
The CPU in there is seriously becoming old tech, unfortunately intel would've made it very costly - but AMD designed that chip yearssssssssss ago, nowadays much more power can be had in the same amount of watts.

    Intro, April 2010 (so designed 09 / 10) - madness

  • How would this compare to a synology 2 bay NAS?

    • This will smash it. But you've gotta get your hands dirty :)

My N40L is running SAB,SB,CP,HP,XBMC as both a NAS and HTPC on Ubuntu 12.4 and let me tell you, it wasn't a painless setup!

Getting my old "Ultraview" HDTV remote working was a nightmare. Not to mention the hundreds of config and driver "hacks" necessary.

Im Running wd reds 2TB's and threw the stock 250 in the odd with bios hack.

      Using a 6450 too.

    • It can do what the Synology with a tad more work. You can run FreeNAS and it will look and feel on the network like the synology or run Win7 if you wish.
The Synology is a plug and play device all setup and ready to run out of the box, super easy.

The advantage of the N40L or the 54 is that its a standalone computer. Just add a drive, 2gb ram, and a videocard (all listed in the deal above) and you have a NAS, HTPC and a great little PC.

      I run a 54 with win7,6450 vc and 8gb ram.

Will run a 12gb blueray rip 5:1 sound with not a problem.

  • bought SSD and 2TB WD, thanks

  • I haven't the Microserver, but I have a Windows 8 PC hooked up via HDMI - I've got an IR receiver, too and a Harmony One. Works so well with XBMC.

    • +1

There are lots of people who like these units - I have a couple and they are a very tidy unit provided you aren't after CPU grunt. The netbook option with USBs hanging off is pretty untidy if you are looking for a (visible) HTPC setup and most NAS units aren't flexible if you want to put your own OS on them which can sometimes be a pain further down the track. I have N40L's and they are quiet and look neat and tidy with easy access to the expansion bays and lots of enthusiast support on the web.

      • If I want a straight up NAS for streaming media to my WDTV is this the best option (i.e a micro server)? Do you need CPU grunt for this? I am tired of leaving my gaming rig running all the time just to stream media to the WDTV.

        • you don't need CPU grunt just to serve media.

a microserver requires a little more setup than a straight up standalone NAS, but is probably better overall.

Anyone don't need the ram and 250g hdd and happy to give away? looking for both, thx

  • Ordered N54L!
Planning to use as network storage and DLNA media server with PS3MS - Looking forward to see how this goes :)

  • Hi ShoppingExpress,

Any new offers on the Samsung 830 512 GB ?

    Cheers

    • Hi yoyo,

Samsung 830 512GB SSD is reaching end of life so it will be harder to do deals. But give me till next week, i will see whether we can offer a deal to include this model.

Nice work ShoppingExpress. Another deal from you guys. Highly impressed. I ordered a N40L on its own. Will get some ram in a few weeks time when I need to buy a 16 Port switch.

Hope to see another one of these in 2-3 months time, as I will be needing another Microserver and don't care if its a N40L or a N54L.

EDIT: If anyone upgrades ram, I would love to take the stock ram left over if anyone wants to sell/trade it.

  • sorry, not really related, but ppl buying these as media centres ,what are you using at the tv end to view your content? or are majority not networking them and attaching straight to tv?
    cheers

    • Maybe you mean media server.. (?)
If you want to stream video to your tv over the network, an xbox 360 or ps3 are both fine dlna renderers.

      • cheers mark

server / centre.. yeah. i currently have a htpc setup as i like my covers and info etc. so i use media browser, and sometimes xbmc, is anyone using something that can do that as a server? playstation just shows my file name. which is no good to me.

        • I don't have a microserver at the backend, I have a stupid old desktop pc, but the principle is the same: on the front end attached to TV I have a popcorn hour media player (good old ancient A100 model), and on the old desktop pc in the back end I run YAMJ. YAMJ is just a bunch of scripts that do the media information scraping and puts them together into a media jukebox xml interface (like on xbmc). The popcorn hour then reads the xml off the server and displays it on the TV.

  • I really want to get a N54L although I read they aren't much chop transcoding HD files using Plex Media Server?

  • Been contemplating on getting the microserver for a while. Can someone who have experience with it help answer a few questions to assist with my purchase.

    Primary use:
    - A second computer for kids to go online and access study materials (flash sites)
    - Backup repository for family photos/videos
    - Share media (music/photo/videos) to networked computer and mobile devices (iphone, ipad, android tablets, Apple TV etc)

    Q1. Should a N40L be sufficient ? I'm leaning toward N40L over N54L, for bang for bucks.
Q2. What OS should I use? I have a spare Win7 64b license, will this do the job?
Q3. Dependant on Q2, how much RAM do I need ?
Q4. Will stock onboard video be ok to run 24" or 27" monitor ? Or shall I stick a 6450 in there ?

    Thanks in advance.
