AGL 17% off Electricity, 14% off Gas + $100 Signup Bonus in NSW

100

I received this AGL deal in the mail - seems particularly good. My current electricity retailer wasn't able to match it to retain me as a customer, anyway!

  • 17% off electricity consumption (10% Guaranteed Discount + 5% Pay on Time Discount + 2% discount for direct debit)
  • 14% off gas consumption (8% Guaranteed Discount + 4% Pay on Time Discount + 2% discount for direct debit)
  • No discount on daily supply charges.
  • $100 credit on first bill
  • $50 voucher to spend in AGL Smarter Energy Store
  • 7000 bonus FlyBuys points for electricity signup
  • 500 bonus FlyBuys points for direct debit signup

I rang AGL and checked that the market rates weren't beefed up artificially, and they were exactly the same as the ones being charged by my current electricity and gas retailer (before discount).

  • what's the rate? it's not always about discount

    • I thought rates were standard across companies?

      • +1

In all states except Victoria electricity rates are fixed by an independent regulator. Which is why we generally get "it's about the rate not the discount" comments from Victorians on posts like this. :P

        • Ah… Poor Victorians

        • Not true.

In QLD you can have either a standard contract (govt regulated rate) or market contract (retailer set rate)

So the question is also valid for QLD (but not this deal)

        • I was once told that the Carbon Tax is going to effect the Prices and the companies who use more Carbon to generate Energy are the ones that are going to charge more to the Consumer. Isnt it true in NSW? I will be delighted to shift to this if its the same pricing across

        • @h4lcyon QLD is the same as NSW and other states (except VIC) in that regard, I think. However, the vast majority of consumer market contracts are marketed as a percentage discount on the regulated rate (such as this particular deal), so discount percentages are useful when comparing different deals. In Victoria, however, an offer advertising a percentage discount is pretty meaningless because there's no single government regulated rate — which is generally why we get comments by Victorians on electricity deals like that of fandibong. :)

        • Agreed, although last year Origin attempted to raise the market rate after signing up a ton of customers, that is until Campbell Newman spat the dummy.

        • Electronictomato, That is not right. If you compare AGL and EA base rates you'll see they are different in NSW too (EA is higher). Please dont spread wrong information if you dont know what you're talking about.

Ipart regulated tariff for electricity is only a guide in NSW. Hence, people should not only look at the discount rates before deciding which offer is best for them.

        • DeBargainHunter, No. All these retailers buy their electricity from the same wholesale market (ie single electriciy pool). And wholesale price increased around $20 per MWh after the carbon tax becase generators charge $20 extra for every MW they offer to the pool. At the end of the year generators will pay this collected money to the federal government as carbon tax.

        • @Sharp I went and got a quote from the EA website for my address in Metropolitan Sydney:

Energy Australia Value Plan ("A guaranteed 12% off your consumption charges all year round"):
          PDF: http://bit.ly/XZtif8

First 10.9589 kWh of Peak usage per day: 26.84c/kWh (incl. GST)
Next 10.9589 kWh of Peak usage per day: 28.05c/kWh (incl. GST)
          Balance: 37.73c/kWH (incl. GST)

Comparing it to the offer the OP posted (clicking through and getting a quote for my address):

          AGL Select 15% + $100:

First 4000 kWh (per year): 26.84c/kWh (incl. GST)
Next 4000 kWh (per year): 28.05c/kWh (incl. GST)
          Thereafter: 37.73c/kWH (incl. GST)

Plans advertising a "get a % off your consumption charges" from Dodo, Lumo, Red Energy, Origin also use the same "base" rates, based on my searching at http://www.myenergyoffers.nsw.gov.au

people should not only look at the discount rates before deciding which offer is best for them.

Fair enough; one should always read the details of any offer they are signing up for, particularly when there are different rates out there. I still would contend that in NSW, plans advertising a "% off your energy usage" generally use the regulated rates as the point of comparison. (Is there fair trading regulations governing this? Much like lenders must use a so-called "comparison rate" in their advertising.)

Deal is pretty good but not that great.
Forget about 2% direct debit discount, b/c Direct Debit charges 2% itself plus transaction fee.

    • Oh! How much is the transaction fee?

      • +1

It depends on Direct Debit company used. But it costs >:(

Always read fine print in Direct Debit form!

        • Checked with my existing provider- Integral Energy. They offered me 16% discount on 12 months contract. But no cash bonus or anything extra. Also, early termination fees of 70$ applies.
Checked with AGL too, they have 75$ early termination fees for 1st 12 months and 50$ for 2nd 12 months (i.e. early termination after 1 yr).
7500 flybuys points = approx 37.5$ discount at Coles group (2000 pts = 10$ discount)
So switching to AGL makes more sense. 100$ cash discount + 37.5$ worth flybuys points + 50$ AGL store voucher + 15-17% discount.

Thanks for the excellent offer OP!

        • Do you have an example?
Are you sure you don't mean a credit card surchage?

  • +1

Discount only on consumption, not the whole bill. Check your current bill for ratio of supply charges v consumption charges.

    • AGL, Dodo, Integral Energy..all providing discounts on usage only, not on daily supply charges (in NSW).

      • it makes a big difference when your fixed supply charges are a big % of your bill
        the discount becomes much less

    • Old deals were on eg 7% off supply charges + consumption . So they may be better than these new ones since for me 80% of charge is supply charges.

i have had very bad experiences with AGL's customer service staff many years ago when they were the only gas provider. i left them the moment competition came along and will probably never go back… that as well as being fortunate enough to be on Origins 25% deal from an ozbargain post a couple months ago. AGL if you are reading this, maybe when someone actually reports a rude staff member it might just work to follow up.

  • The rates… may be varied at any time by us.

That is why I stick to the regulated tariff.

    AGL screwed me really badly.

Cold called me one day and offer this a deal $175 off the electricity bill one-off and 10% off both electricity and gas usage in exchange for a 3-year contract.

At the time, I know I was going to move in 6 months time so I asked the representative what happens if I move residence.

He said there is no disconnection charge for moving residence even if it is within the contract period.

So I signed up and move into the new home and called AGL to move connection to my new home.

Guess what I was told they were unable to set up an account for me because they cannot identify my address despite I provided the electricity metre ID and gas metre ID.

I found this really odd and spoke to my next door neighbour and found out that they had no problem opening an account with AGL and did it online.

So I called back and spoke to AGL again and this time the representative said there must have been a mistake and opened up an account for me while on the phone and told me I will receive a welcome letter in one week's time.

So I waited for a month. Nothing came through the mail. So naturally I called again and told them the story and this time the representative said that there is no record of me calling and opening up an account with AGL.

what a load of BS! For all the conversation I had with AGL, I requested the representative to leave a message regarding what we discussed at the time and obtain a reference number.

I had enough of AGL and called the ombudsman and a few week later. A lady from the Ombudsman told me that she spoke to AGL and found no record of any conversation I had with AGL. (I guess I have been speaking to animals then).

Hopefully my personal experience with AGL can serve as a big red alert to those who are going to sign up with AGL.

Think twice before you do so. Once you do, expect the worst.

Once you go AGL once, you will never go AGL again.

Why can't AGL match Origin Energy's offer of 25% discount on usage bill, offerred about 2 months back? Shame about their competitiveness.

  • +1

This seems like a pretty good deal to me. The $100 credit on your first bill more than covers the $75 termination fee. I mean even if you only stayed with them for a few months you are ahead $25 (plus you get the other benefits; 7000 fly buys points etc).
I'm currently with Energy Australia and AGL's rates appear to be exactly the same so any reason I shouldn't switch to AGL?

  • thanks op, just switch from orgin.

  • I switched but then Origin called me and offered 23% electricity and 14% gas.. plus $100 credit on EACH bill.. and also to pay any termination fee I may be charged ("no questions asked"). So.. I just went back with Origin.. I don't know any more… Haha..

    • seems I need to do the same? I'm just out of origin contract. I rang up Origin today and they offer 23% E and 14% G but no credit at all..
