Found this when I was looking at Dell's tablet. Maybe this is good price for ultrabook with FHD screen.

    • It's actually a $500 discounted price.

  • It says it is $500 off.

I think the non-full hd is probably around that price and considered "regular price"

  • Hmmm, this or a XPS 12 convertible for $1399 (after $200 discount)?

    • I'm wondering the same…

    • Or even better: This or a Zenbook 13 Touch UX31A?

    • I would buy the xps 13 as the xps 12 is quite heavy but if you like the idea of a laptop/ tablet then go with xps 12. get the dock too , it quite cool.

  • My 2 year old XPS runs hot all the time (since new). Definitely can't lay on my lap.

  • The XPS 13 is probably the best Windows laptop available. Good find.

    • why is it the best?

    • XPS 13 is also a great Linux laptop by the way, with official support from Dell (check "Developer Edition"). Now I'm tempted.

  • +1

Awesome price, the specs are right on for the money, extremely light at 1.36kg (one of the lightest ultrabooks ive seen)

    Very nice, so ordered.

Good price but XPS is well known to run hot because of the limited body space.
I have bought an Alienware refurb yesterday for a dollar less at $1298 - spec:

    Alienware M17X 3rd Generation Intel® Core(TM) i7-3630QM Processor (6MB
    Cache, up to 3.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0); 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM (4x4GB); 1TB 5400RPM
    Hard Drive; Windows 8, English (64bit); Slot Load Fixed Blu-ray BD-ROM / DVD + /-RW Combo Drive;
Integrated 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet NIC; 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7970M; FullHD
    Camera with dual digital microphones; 9-cell Primary Battery; Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230
With Bluetooth 4.0; 17.3" (43.94 cm) WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD; No OS media included.

It will not be at portable purely of the weight and thickness but I like the look of the beast :)

    • +1

Apples to Oranges, they are very different machines for completely different purposes.

      • -2

True, I was looking at a replacement laptop to be use at home. Thinking that I won't be carrying it outside I have decided to go with Alienware for similar pricing but refurb. I have read that the XPS throttle down frequently because of heat management issue.

    • +4

You must be very proud of yourself

As the specs of your Alienware have nothing to do with this bargain considering that they are completely different machines and yours is a crappy refurb

      • refurbs tend to last longer than new products because of the testing and new components they are replaced with. ask any ceo if they want their products returned again

      • -3

It has 12 months warranty, so what is your point? I am proud of using refurb because I have more frontal lobe than you have. I will not surrender to ridiculous mark up price if I can helped it.

"It will not be at portable purely of the weight and thickness but I like the look of the beast :)"

Comment of the year!!! At a starting weight of 4.3 kg for the M17x basically I could shove 3 of these XPS 13 into a bag and still be lighter that your Alienware!

    • got a link to your deal donkey?

You have to catch the moment. I was ordering a Dell Precision Laptop at the time but this caught my eye and ending up getting it for my son. He is at school camp at the moment. He will be one happy fellow when he received this surprise gift next week.

I have also order 6 OptiPlex(TM) 790 Small Form Factor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2120 Processor (3.30GHz,3MB) refurb for my business. The money I have saved from these 6 units more than covered for the Alienware laptop.

    This is awesome;

What happens if you are looking at it from a 320x240 display? LOL

    • This deal is actually the Full HD version, so a more up to date review is here;
      http://www.slashgear.com/dell-xps-13-ultrabook-full-hd-editi…

      • Doesn't really seem like a review but rather a news post.

        • Reviews are pretty light on due to this model just being released. Just pointing out that the review posted before was for older non-full hd which has copped a lot of flack due to it limiting screen resolution.

        • Yep agreed.

Now the question is - XPS13 or Surface Pro??

        • I rather the XPS13 as I don't like the Surface Pro's keyboard.

        • Can't really compare as the XPS13 doesn't have touch screen and the Surface Pro's touch keyboard is awful. The Surface is of lower spec as well compared to the XPS13.

        • Really depends on what you are going to use it for… If you want a tablet than can be also a laptop than Surface Pro. However if you want a good laptop than XPS.

This is a really good review of the Surface (Pro):
          http://www.anandtech.com/show/6695/microsoft-surface-pro-rev…
It actually sounds like an amazing machine, and I for one can't wait for version 2!

  • $1299 doesn't get you the Full HD version

It shows FHD for me. If I was needing a traveling laptop this xps is what I will get. The price is great and remember the 5.25% discount using Starthere http://www.starthere.com.au/Dell.

      • Thanks for reminding me about the Starthere offer.

When I try and go through Starthere the laptop shows as without discount $1699. Is it possible that you cannot combine the cashback offer with the discounted price?

        • The discount won't shows up. You need to register for Starthere, use the link in start here to get into Dell website (I believe that set a cookie to track the purchase), and the discount amount get refunded to your nominated bank after a few weeks.

It is not worth the trouble if you made infrequent and small purchase as there is a small annual fee involved.

        • Sorry I wasn't clear… I am a Starthere member (Founder level - thanks Ozbargain!) the problem is the $500 discount (as in what this bargain is about) does not show up when navigating from Starthere… :-(

        • +1

I think I found the issue — the same XPS 13 notebook is sold at both Dell Home and Dell Business website. If you go to Dell Home (from their home page or via StartHere), it would be $1699. However if you go to Dell Business it would be $1,299 even if you go through StartHere.

          Same spec.

        • Thanks Scotty!!!

That sorted it. I really think that this was a great bargain (so thanks OP!) especially with the cashback offer (thanks donkeykong!) - love the OZB community <3 ha ha

        • Alas the transaction is not showing on Starthere, I am guessing maybe switching to the Dell business website clears the cookie or something like that… :(

  • Errr, click the link above. It's showing 1080p for me.

  • considering getting this!
shame about no ethernet port :\

    • +1

you can buy a USB to Ethernet adapter if u need Ethernet.

  • I work for dell I can tell you this an excellent price for this laptop. this is the new model and it was just released today, so to get $500 off is amazing. I would highly recommend paying for 3 years warranty as these things are very expensive to repair. motherboard alone is well over $500.

    • What is your experience with these ultrathin laptop in term of fault and return to base for service after 12 months as $300 for 2 additional years of warranty is rather steep.

      • like anything electronic they can fail at anytime. I personally I have a xps 14 and I have to place a service call twice. once for a faulty USB port and the other a faulty Ethernet port. because they are soldered onto the motherboard the whole motherboard needed to replaced which iis expensive. you can extend the warranty before the end of warranty period. also warranty with dell is onsite. there is no back to base warranty. because this a premium product is made very well . i have had no negative feedback regarding any faults with the xps 13. at this price I would buy it

        • +1

I would expect to get at least 24 mths statutory warranty on a laptop for $1,299. I'd take the gamble myself, and if Dell refused warranty then they'd have a fight on their hands.

  • Anyone know if you can change out the ssd in these? le google isnt turning up much for me.

  • What does "For Commercial Customers Only" under ProSupport mean to a home user?

    • it means you cannot purchase it unless your a registered business. the advantage of pro support is that call centre is in Sydney as opposed to overseas call centre.

      • If I purchase it under a business and give it to a tech-savvy home user, will that home user have any problems getting warranty support?

  • Can anyone see when the $500 cash off expires?

    • Feb 14, so be quick!

  • Great value - I'd consider buying, if I (a) needed one (b) possessed the required funds. It's great to see that Dell finally gave up the 1366 x 768 crap for their premium ultrabooks.

Can anyone with first-hand experience comment on the build quality vs Samsung Series 9's?

    • +1

I have the series 9. I remember the first time I played with the original XPS13 at JB. The first thing that crossed my mind was "this feels solid". It's on par if not a little more solid than the series 9, from memory.

    • +1

I havent got this particular model (ive ordered one) but i do have an XPS 17 that i purchased last year.

Very solid laptop, the fit and finish is excellent, the aluminium cover is fantastic, came with a little bit of bloatware but not as bad as some manufacturers, overall i was quite impressed.

I do reccomend XPS series laptops.

And if your a dell partner with work etc you can change out the warranty to the pro version which is onsite <4 hours.

  • Just a FYI for anyone interested, I picked up an xps 13 for $700 at arc computers a few weeks ago. http://www.arc.com.au/pub.php?pid=52214&p=product

Giving up some CPU (2nd gen i5), RAM, the screen res, but its just a light web browsing and office box. For $600 cheaper still including the SSD and backlit keyboard, easy choice (for me).

Personally, FHD is a bit much on a 13", but I understand the attraction. 1600x900 would be best.

    • It's not so much the full hd res, but rather the wider ips viewing angle and wider colour gamut. Also the 3rd gen cpu with hd 4000 graphics means you can play decent 3d games.

      • Yeah I remember the first time I saw the first-gen XPS13. It looked and felt great, but the screen really turned me off. Washed out with poor viewing angles… it looks like it belongs to a budget laptop, not a premium ultrabook.

that said, nearly all ultrabooks last year had crappy screens. The Series 9 13" is one of the rare ones with an awesome screen. The Series 9 15" screen is crappy though.

        • Yeah it was still a new standard then, now its had some time to mature (18 months or so) we are starting to see some really nice units come through, and with Haswell towards the end of the year its only going to get better and better.

      • how would guild wars 2 go on it?

  • Tomorrow is the last day for the offer, so for those of you on the fence, better decide quick!

  • Rep: Any chance of getting the 'home' version of this machine for $100 less?
The 'home' version comes with Windows 8 (non-pro) and is $100 cheaper than the 'business' version which comes with Windows 7 pro. I don't want to pay Microsoft so much money.

    • hmm? Where do you see a home version of the XPS13 for $1199?

      • I meant the regular price of the 'home' is $100 less than the regular price of the 'business' version, but the home version is not currently being discounted.

        • oh haha. good luck. :)

    • I don't think there is any rep here…
