  • This is a brilliant machine. Well worth the money and the grinder is also really top notch.

    My heart skipped a beat — for a moment there I thought it was $299 for the coffee machine!

    • +3

      I think your heart skipped a beat from all the coffee you've been drinking.

      • I've barely had a sip of my first one for the day.

  • so what do you do when it breaks down in say 5-10 years, can you get spare parts for it?
    I'm not doubting the capability, but for such a price, you would want it to last.

    • +2

      True, that. I'd gladly go for the aging Rancilio Silvia over this.

    • Breville has been around for a long time. I can't comment on the longevity of the machine, but chances are better of getting spare parts for this that the Silvia in the long term

      • Maybe so. But imo, the less electronics in machines like this, the better.

        Seems like a fair price for this machine plus grinder, though.

      You may be very pleasantly surprised. I'm a HUGE fan of Breville's spare parts support. A couple of years ago I inherited a ~20y.o. Breville Whizz food processor from a friend. They bought a new food processor, the only thing wrong with this was a broken plastic sleeve on the dirve shaft. Rang Breville spares, they had the part still available, for like $1.39. I grabbed 2, plus a few seals for my coffee machine and a spare paddle for my bread machine (to justify the postage cost). They seem to have a policy of selling spares close to cost, to keep their appliances running, and build their reputation, not like many others who see spares as a profit centre and opportunity to gouge customers/force them to upgrade.

      • Good to know, thanks for the info. I have been thinking of getting this for a while but lately I have stopped drinking coffee due to health reason. My wife is still having a cup per day. This is going to be overkill for that purpose.

  • I have this grinder and love it. That said I bought it from the same website for like $175 a year or two ago. I'm not saying this is a bad deal, just be aware that the RRP is $299 not the actually price if you shop around.

    DJs had this for 1299 - 10% just after christmas, including free gridner. you should be able to negotiate a better price than 1274 with a store that has the free grinder promotion.

    • +1

      Bit harsh for a neg rep I would think. Although you "should" be able to negotiate a better price, this looks the be the best advertised price around at the moment, particularly with free shipping.

      • Well.. the neg is borderline. $105 isn't a small amount.

        At least the neg draws people's attention to what they should expect to be able to bargain to.

        EDIT: Going from a few comments down, DJ's DIDNT include the grinder at that price.

    • So why didn't you post the deal instead?

    and also

    is good source of info.

    I have the grinder its great, and breville has thought outside the square to make a great coffee machine. Its the best for the price nothing comes close.

    Great machine. The price is ok, better then usually advertised price but is fairly standard if you are willing to haggle a bit.
    I got mine around 7 months ago from a large chain store and managed to get the machine, grinder (was'nt a free promo at the time), knock box, 3 hour barista course with Toby Estate, 5 years extended warrenty and 12 month interest free for $1350.

  • +1

    Check out David Jones, I got mine for $1109 with %10 off 3 weeks ago (without grinder).

    Can't recommend this machine (and grinder) enough.

    For the "purists" thinking it's all electronic bells and whistles, fear not. This is a truly manual machine, the smarts in it make it a better manual machine than something like a Silvia.

    For instance, the PID means the temperature is rock steady, no 'surfing' to get it right, and no after-market add-ons needed.

    The shot delivery is volumetric - NOT time based.

    When idle, the machine will turn the temperature down to 60 or so, to save you some money, but minimise the startup time. On top of that, you can make it start up at a particular time each day. Get out of bed, the thing is hot and ready to go.

    Other smarts are about design and not electronic fanciness. You can fill the water tank from the front or the back. From the front you don't need to remove the tank - there is a pop open hatch. If you do need to turn it around, it has retractable casters to make that a one-handed operation. The drip tray has a popup "empty me" indicator. If you overfill the tank it drains into the drip tray - not your counter. If you leave the steam or water valve open by accident, the machine won't gush water when it starts up.

    I very nearly bought a Silvia - I am so glad I didn't.

    • "you can make it start up at a particular time each day. ".

      Most of the other features you list are also available on the sunbeam em6910 (which is around $700 or so normally?), except for this timer start.

      That alone almost makes me want to upgrade :)

      • The Sunbeam EM6910 is not in the same league as the Breville BES900 and no you are not paying $500 more for an automatic startup.

        If you want the features the Breville has, there is no other machine around that can match it for price.

        The biggest difference is that the Breville is a dual boiler as opposed to a twin termoblock machine. Also programmable pre-infusion and consistant water temperature, PID, group heater, engineering etc. If you are seriously looking at getting a new machine, do some research, understand the differences and what you want/need in a machine.

      • Except the main feature: Twin stainless steel boilers > Twin aluminium thermoblocks

        I don't believe there's anything under $2K with the features of the Breville. Twin boilers, PID, programmable pre-infusion, programmable volumetric buttons, timer on, auto off and heated group head. Also comes with plenty of water filters (even though I only use filtered water)

        Biggest negatives for me are:
        * the steam power but the steam is nice and dry;
        * can't descale it yourself;
        * baskets (you get 4) are a bit big;
        * puck gets stuck to screen with single basket;
        * doesn't come with a blind filter, only a silicon disk (getting picky now)

  • Thankyou… I almost bought the Sunbeam EM7000 and breville grinder today for $1k… happy to pay the extra to buy the Dual Boiler Breville

  • Thanks all. The comments on this post swayed me into buying this unit and grinder. Love them both.

    • Did you haggled?

      • No, tried various options and other retailers etc, but couldn't get a better price. Didn't want to wait, so paid full price.

        • Well enjoy your machine. It is already a good price. I envy you :)
