How does it compare to professionally cleaned carpet?
It doesn't. We paid top money (over $400 at HN) for one of these and have regretted it since. It does a fairly decent job of vacuuming, although it is quite noisy.
The job it does of shampooing the carpet though is average at best and leaves them quite wet compared to other machines; it doesn't spray, it saturates. The third time we used it the walkways were still so dirty afterwards that we went and hired the rug doctor the same day to do the job properly, and it has sat in the shed ever since.
Although it does come with an upholstery tool, I'd advise against using it on furniture, as it will make it very wet.
Have you used it on hard floors? Thanks
I can understand your disappointment.
I think $200 delivered is very good value even for vacuum function alone. Shampooing carpet, rug or floor is a bonus. Thanks for the information. Thanks for the info, think I will pass…
I have this model too, but haven't used its carpet cleaning features yet.
This thing really sucks though. Highly recommended.
Good timing. I've been looking for a Bissell that cleans the carpet and rugs for the past week. Ordered one. Thanks.
can this one wash carpet?
Yes, but will leave it very wet. Read my previous post for more info
Is it easy/cheap to buy the HEPA filter replacements?
I have one of these. Yes, it does wash carpet pretty well, but it won't do as good a job as a professional carpet cleaning session. The HEPA filter is washable in water, so shouldn't need replacing in a hurry. If you read the reviews (here, and elsewhere) opinions are quite polarised - some people report that it doesn't work at all. Having tried the machine itself, I can let you know that it is much more complicated than your average vacuum cleaner. In normal vacuum mode it uses water as the filter, so you need to put cold water in the capture tank, turn a selector to "filter vacuum" where the hose attaches. The water level in this case different to the "empty level" I'll mention later… In shampoo mode, you put hot water with shampoo solution in a supply (different) tank, change the selector to "wet clean", and leave the capture tank empty. You use a special shampoo head on the end of the hose (with a narrow slit, so you can't really vacuum up rubbish and shampoo at the same time). You wet the carpet using trigger on the handle, and suck up the water in smooth strokes towards you only. The angle of the shampoo head is critical. If you don't get the right angle, it won't suck up much of the solution, and your carpet will become saturated very quickly. Do it right, and it sucks up quite a lot of solution on every stroke. The muck goes into the capture tank, which you are supposed to empty before it reaches a certain level. That "empty me" level is much higher than the "fill with cold water" level, and if you use the higher level in normal vacuum mode you won't get much suction. Sorry for the long comment, but it's important you assess whether this is all too complicated to deal with. If you're OK with it, it seems to be a great machine. Hth.
we need more people like you on OZB! explained in minute detail +ve from me!
Have you tried finding the replacement HEPA filters?
No, I haven't replaced the HEPA filter yet. The manual is here:
http://www.bissell.com.au/images/UserGuides/42e82ea3-df1e-46…On page 15 it explains how to remove the HEPA filter and wash it.
Hey dwe, how would you rate this machine from 1 to 10 on the quality of job this can perform when using the correct technique. I've been thinking of grabbing a refurb rainbow for $500 or even a entry level commercial grade machine for $1000. If this can do slightly above average job then I like its pricing. Any good on car with the upholstery head for shampooing or too wet like previous poster as mentioned.. perhaps down to technique used?
Honestly, I think for $200 it's a good buy, but maybe not at $400. I bought it because it uses water as the filter for normal vacuuming, and because I wanted to use the shampoo function every now and then. But it's not going to replace a commercial unit, or a visit from a professional. I've only used it on carpet, so I can only guess that, yes, getting the right technique when doing something fiddly like a car interior would be difficult. I can't remember which tools have the spray outlet, but you would definitely have to use a smaller tool and be careful to suck up the water before putting more down. Hth.
poor design
if it cannot do major functions it is pointless buying it for basic ones
choice mag should give the best procut reviews if not out of date.
Wow, just received it. Super fast delivery!
how did u find it? Are you using it on hardfloors?
Yeah let us know if its worth it or not in your opinion.
Just opened the box and haven't got a chance to use it. Will report back when I get a chance. Surprised at the accessories it comes with - 19 in total in addition to the machine and the hose, including 4 bottles of cleaning solutions, 236ml each. Agreed with dwe that it's more complicated than you think.
The thing is heavy and by the feel of it, seems well made.
Looking at the picture I always thought it was very plastic like and not that strong.. Let us know how you go on your first test drive..
As promised this is my initial impression of the unit as I didn't enough time to test everything it claims to do. What I did this morning is to:
- vacuum the carpets and rugs
- deep clean and dry the rugs
- vacuum the tiled floor
My three bedrooms are carpeted and the lounge room is tiled with two rugs, one big, the other small. First I filled the collection tank with water and attached the air powered floor turbo brush. Always remember to fill the collection tank with water before you vacuum as the dust collected ends in the water. It did a very good job vacuuming the carpets and rugs. Next I decided to wash the rugs (knowing I didn't enough time to wash the carpets). Again, preparations - emptying the collection tank, filling the solution tank with hot water and solution and attaching the carpet deep cleaning tool to the wand. This proved to be much harder as you need to brush the carpet. The end result wasn't all that good - it did clean the light stains but didn't lift the tough ones. They are still there, just getting lighter in color. However, it has a good sucking power. It heats and dries the rugs well. Last, I vacuumed the tiled floor with the multi-surface floor tool. No complaints with that. It was very clean after vacuuming.
The good:- The range of accessories in the box
- Very good sucking power, making it a good vacuum cleaner
- Versatility
The Bad:
- Bulky and heavy (esp with water and solution in the tank)
- Noisy (yes, I mean it)
- User unfriendly (the user guide, just minor criticism)
Overall this is a good vacuum cleaner, and considering the asking price and the range of accessories it comes with, I would give it 4 stars out of 5.
Thanks for a good honest review Xiangtan! From my research the performance of shampooing with this unit all comes down to surface prepartion. ie. Dependance more on chemicals to lift stains than actual unit itself. Also I've read the wetter the carpet the better this unit performs at stucking up containments from the pile. If you have old worn carpet without much pile depth then this unit doesn't do much, so I guess more the more fluffy the pile the better this unit works.
Thinking about grabbing one since alot of home car enthusiasts get the small portable version of the Bissell vac to save on money but still does a okay moderate job better than manual methods but still not at professional level.
I ordered one last night. Looking at youtube clips seems like reasonable price at $200 for the average job it does. For a more professional machine I think the Numatic George would be much closer to professional carpet shampooers but that will cost $700.. Or you could purchase a RugDocter machine for $1250 and rent out to friends :) So $200 doesn't seem too bad for at least a maintenance shampooer inbetween professional hire out machines.
I got one a month ago for about $30 more, also at Bing Lee. Decent machine, I have seen it for around $250 at other places online, definitely not worth paying $400.
