what the hell? i've never even heard of this thing!

  • oh man!!! I bought u2713 already, should i get this one too???
    So tempting!!!

    • +3

Keep the U2713 - it'll seem strange not having the extra height if you're already accustomed to it.

And if you are using it mainly for Microsoft Office then this probably wouldn't be what you want :)

    • +2

teh M on the end is for mainstream - means this is a 6bit eIPS rather than the higher end 8bit sIPS models Dell is traditionally famous for. The IPS for the rest of us lol

  • my mate just bought the LG version of this
    its pretty nice and wide

  • Looks great, wish I saw this before I bought a 24" a while back! Wonder what theatrical movies would look like on it?

  • +3

    2560 x 1080? Ooohhh. Wide.

  • Whaaa? When did Dell release a 29"?!

  • +3

This is a really weird resolution, i suppose its good for watching movies, but i dunno about other stuff…

    • +2

Good for watching movies & immersive gaming & a wider screen is definitely an advantage when multitasking whilst avoiding the need for 2 monitors to do the same operation with an annoying border inbetween the dual setup

      • Movies are usually in 16:9?

        • Not theatrical movies which usually have black bars. I'm not sure when the box would cutoff though shrugs

    • +1

      Are 21:9 movies easily available?

      • yes, basically all of them without black bars.

        • +1

So are the 21:9 movies 16:9 with black bars, or truly 21:9 at 2560x1080?

Cropping black bars and stretching the image is cheating. ;)

    • I wonder if you could have a higher viewable range playing games

  • It is almost like the size (ie Height) of a 24"(16:9) monitor But with the extra wide 640 px (2560-1920)
Display area Height is actually 10mm more than a 24" (16:8)

Sound good but not sure if/how the software display will be compatible with this resolution?
Good for " Multi display" or can have one monitor instead of 2 monitors…?

Never base a purchase on a CNET review.

      • -1

They haven't steared me wrong so far, they are generally on the money for most things especially routers.

      • +3

Trust this man. He is Promite

    • C-Net, reviews that the front-office suits have approved based on anything but honesty.

  • funky resolution

  • Hope they make a touchscreen version of these.. would be so bad ass with Windows 8

  • Im using Dell 2408WFP at the moment… am I downgrading if i pick up this one?!

    • +1

If you need a few more inches in length, then this isn't for you - but if you need the girth then this is perfect! Would be great to replace having two 22" monitors.

    • you still get a slightly larger screen (10mm in height) and the extra wide screen.
I do not like the 27' monitor with higher resolution (2560 x 1440), make everything look so small, ie fonts, software layout,…Just depend on your personal needs/preferences.
For me, it sounds good as an upgrade to my existing 24"

      • -1

why is the youtube review below mentioned 11.25"/28.5cm viewable height, while my 16:9 24" has 30cm in height?
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf7FcIgkgDY

        • I want to know as well. As from the specs it says :
          Preset Display Area (H x W):
          694.6 x 308.9mm
          27.30" x 12.16"
If you watched the youtube review, it does says it's about 1/2 inch taller …which is about 1cm..

      • Control Panel >> Display >> "select medium or large as required"

        • does not really work as i've tried

        • Right click desktop> select screen resolution> select Make text and other items larger or smaller

          Works as advertised on my 30" @ 2560x1600 & rotated 20" @ 1200x1600 for total desktop @ 3760x1600.

        • Yes. BUT with some softwares because the text are larger , some of them look awkward and does not really fit in their "boxes/locations" I 've tried on the 27" U2713. It only make the font/text larger, so if you have "logos/tools/graphics…" still look smaller.

    • +2

u have an 8bit sIPS, this is a cheaper 6bit eIPS. so colour wise a downgrade

    • I would keep the Dell 24inch - they are very good allround monitors. I don't see the attraction of so wide a monitor unless you are working on 2 documents side by side (and even then a 16:10 aspect ratio is usually broad enough to get the job done). You also need to take into account the fact that these wide monitors occupy more desk space and cannot be pivoted 90 degrees like a 24 inch can (which is great for portriat oriented photography and ebooks).

    • Needs to be 2844*1200 for a zinio/mag spread and it's not there, or retina either.

    • Dude that monitor is the BOMB! I got one as well back in the day, still going strong!

I wish I bought two, but the budget only allowed one and even then it was massive and expensive.

  • I would rather have 2 smaller monitors, but nice deal.

  • +1

now if it only had 90' rotation, it would be PERFECT!

But hey, for the price I'm not complaining.

As for the resolution - I'm sure for gaming it's fine - and movies you can just crop out the black bars with MPC-HC so that's not a big deal…

But using Word on this is sure going to feel awkward without that extra vertical height LOL…

I'm certain that they released this monitor to compete with the Korean ones… They would win if they had the Motoring discount stack with this through LOL

    • LOL

    • +1

Perhaps you coud adapt the scroll wheel on you mouse to move your chair up and down, to help you 'scroll' through the page and thus avoid neck strain.

  • +3

This would make an EPIC gaming monitor!

  • thats a big screen!

  • Has anyone tested this for gaming?

  • Awesome deal! Wish i needed a new monitor so the gf would be none the wiser.

  • Crazy price. 5 years time we will be using 80" Vivid 3D display.

  • I paid through the nose for my 30" Dell U3011, how is this a third of the price?

    • +3

becouse this is 6bit eIPS and yours is vastly superior 8bit sIPS
simple really, same reason my U2412HM was $250 and the U2410 is still $600 odd

      • +1

        FYI U3011, U2410 and U2711 are all 10bit panels.

    • +3

also this is essentially a stretched 24", it is actually very small height wise compared to even the 27" dell.

I have u3011 and samsung 27a950D 120hz and my dell is gathering dust now :P

120hz is a HUGH difference in gaming!

  • +1

Would the 8ms Response Time be bad for gaming or doesn't that matter anymore?

    • +1

is less than 1/100th of a second, so no

    • +1

It should be fine, unless you are coming directly from a CRT.

In the cnet review they also measured the overall input lag at 25ms vs a CRT which is actually pretty good for an IPS monitor.

So overall it should make a good gaming monitor unless you are hardcore about your competitive FPS games - then you should be looking for a good 120Hz monitor instead.

  • any 10 or 15% off codes that work with this deal

    • Tried a few, but they seem not to be working.

I got two Dell(TM) UltraSharp U2412M 24 Monitor with LED, for 538 using a 15% coupon on top of their special, but seems they have disabled it now.

  • I only bought a 2312 from Dell 9 or so months ago, but shit I'm tempted to try this out….

    • +1

i only want to get this because i always have 4 windows open at the same time.
From a 15.4" (16:9) screen to a 29" (21:9) screen, it would be nice to have them all in one view

  • +3

Even though this comes in at a nice price I would be dubious about this monitor as it looks like it uses the same grainy anti-glare coating that the U2711 series is notorious for. Like myself there's hundreds of people out there that have turned away from Dell monitors as a result of the poor AG coatings. If you're looking for a quality monitor you can't go past the Samsung S27A850 which can now be found for just under $550.

    • +1

True, but for the price it can't be beat!

And the AG is only really annoying for reading a lot of text - if this monitor is for movies and games mainly then it's fine!

Also depends on your eyesight :)

  • +2

Bought one a few weeks ago.. Planetside 2 and BF3 are fantastic on this thing.. (just change the FOV)
Also perfect for 2 webpages side by side

  • My main concern is watching movies with all this width- any thoughts? A lot of black on the sides?

Also, will hdmi 1.4 have enough bandwidth to put out 2560x1080?

    • The black bars is the result of the aspect ratio of the video - usually you can crop out most of the black bars by using media players like MPC-HC, but there still will be some unless you stretch the vid.

And HDMI 1.4 is fine for this!

    • Many Blu Ray are at anamorphic 2.39:1 which is about the closest you can get to 21:9.

  • Check that your video card supports Dual Link DVI and this resoltion. Not sure about how to drive HDMI to this res.

  • It is interesting to see wide screen being cheaper than 'tall' screen. Those 16:10 monitors never goes down in price but the 16:9 and now 21:9 monitors are often ready to drop price.

I'm guessing the 1080 height is the key reason. This means that both 16:9 and 21:9 can be manufactured in the same production line.

Regarding the monitor's. check these out
    http://noble-press.com/2012/12/this-is-my-next-monitor-29-of…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iJwZSW454U
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmHWBmcih9M

I'm keen to get one myself!

  • or just use display port

  • Perfectly good IPS monitor but just depends what purpose it will serve.

If you purchased a DELL u2410, 2711 or 3011 then you made a wise purchase - from memory they display
1 billion colours. The cheaper IPS like this only display 16.7 million.

If I am offered 16.7 million VS a Billion dollars, I am aware of a difference.
Size does not always matter, but quality does if needed. 16.7 million is fine for everyday use but if you use Photoshop, lightroom or illustration graphics programs requiring monitor calibration you will be willing to pay the extra premium for the 1 billion colours.

Quickest way to recognize a really Good IPS panel is the amount of colours it displays, if its 1 billion plus then it’s a good panel, pretty much from any manufacturer.

  • Hmmm… this or kogan/catleap? This is pretty competitive at 479.

  • Also, Dell S2340L for about $200 using FLGV6?C3SM2DLZ as the coupon code (12% off monitors). About $10 cashback also available via StartHere. So, $190 for the S2340L, not bad! $30 cheaper than the lowest on Staticice.

  • this is a nice monitor for wide screen movies (envelove style) but the pixle mapping isnt 1:1 which is a shame, 4:1 woudl also work nice 3840 x 1600 would be pretty sweet for my movie watching needs

essentially this is better than a dell 30" for watching blurays, as yo wont get as big black bars, even though its samller, the ratio is 21:9 which rocks

    • 3840x1600? How many movies do you want to watch?!

      • same as eyefinity 3dvision etc but with a single monitor with no bezels basically

i doubt theyd release this until flexible displays becomes mainstream

  • Done !

  • will my onboard video (asrock extreme 3 gen 3 with i5 2500k sandy bridge) run this monitor at full res ok?
Its just for movies and web mostly.

    • Why don't you google it or read the manual?

    • what gpu u running?

      • just onboard

i looked at the manual before but missed it.
        Looked again and found:

Supports HDMI 1.4a Technology with max. resolution up to
        1920x1200 @ 60Hz
        - Supports DVI with max. resolution up to 1920x1200 @ 60Hz
        - Supports D-Sub with max. resolution up to 2048x1536 @
        75Hz

So sounds like its a no go would need a new video card as well :(

  • Anyone can confirm that this is actually "larger/Taller" than a (16:9) 24" monitor?
I mean the HEIGHT of the viewing area/display is indeed about 1cm more than a (16:9) 24" monitor. (as someone highlighted one of the youtube review info contradict dell given specs).

    • look at 00:47 in this video its 1/2" or 1.27cm taller.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf7FcIgkgDY&playnext=1&list=P…

      • Yes, I saw the video (but did not mention the other mon was 24" 16"9, I would assume so)
However ths same guy also wrote in response to
" ..I thought the screen size (without the bezel) was 12.16 (according to Dell)." :

"Physical height is ~12". Viewable height is about 11.25"
I think HE got it wrong

        • Actually "The top panels are Dell U2211H panels. 21.5" as on his written comments on the youtube review.
so specs from dell website [Re: Preset Display Area (H x W) 694.6 x 308.9mm
          27.30" x 12.16"] are incorrect

So it is definitely "shorter" than a 24" (16:9) monitor (11.77" height)
(so would look like a downgrade to my 24" monitor?)

        • Look at post 26 on this thread
          http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18478094

as you can see next to a 23" lg ips NO HEIGHT is lost there is a tiny amount gained if any.

I don't understand how you can see it as a downgrade because you loose a tiny bit of height look at the width you gain?

dells spec is right I think as it says here:

          Height without stand:
          317.0 mm
          12.48"

          Preset Display Area (H x W):
          694.6 x 308.9mm
          27.30" x 12.16"

allowing for 0.32" around 8mm for the bezel.

This sounds right as they would not try to squash 1080 px into a smaller area

        • Preset Display Area (H X V)
as it implies "display area" or in other word the screen area (without the bezel) .

if you look at the 24" (16:9) Dell monitor
          Preset Display Area (H X V)
          531.36 mm (20.92 inches) x 298.89 mm (11.77 inches)
Which is the screen area/size. (as my current 24")
So the info from the website for the 29" in that aspect is incorrect

As for downgrade is just for Me, personally (as fonts and photos would tiny look smaller, i do not play games….but not as bad as I thought)

But thanks for the above link

    • Any user of this moninotr can measure the Height of the screen only, please?

  • +1

Got mine today it is amazing so far !

    • +1

Anything you don't like about it? Do you ever feel yourself wanting that extra vertical space, like when viewing a web page etc?

      • chuck it on a Vesa mount tilt 90 degrees to 9:21 and you can have more web page viewing than you would ever get with most other monitors.

  • +1

Ordered tues night, delivered this morning. Haven't opened it yet, but the box is very WWIIDDE !!

  • If anyone is still following this there's a new one on dell outlet for $368 and 2 refurbished ones for $330.

    • All gone :( Thanks anyway!
