I have to say that Lenovo CES performance has NOT been exciting for business users. I was looking forward to the prototype of new T or X series. Instead we are getting ThinkPad Helix, which while cool, I can't see myself doing heavy work on it for 10 hours a day. The new E431/E531 also demonstrated the new "5 button clickpad" that will probably be used in all future ThinkPads. That basically removes the 3 dedicated buttons for the TrackPoint, and integrates everything into one single big touchpad. I guess it's good for those looking for MacBook-like huge touchpads, but for die-hard TrackPoint users it's really a bad move. We'll see.

I'm also meeting up with some Lenovo guys today to see whether they can bring OzBargain some exclusive deals this year. I'll also be asking about the support situation in Australia, which seems to be one major concern on these Lenovo deals. Wish me luck.

UPDATE: New coupon code, as the one given to me from Lenovo wasn't working.

  1. Not valid with ThinkPad Tablet and ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch

  • they would have to be some pretty darn good deals for us to consider them, taking into account the type of deep discounts we are accustomed to. That being said if they do pull through, expect to see huge volumes for Lenovo

also coupon not valid for the carbon touch or thinkpad tablet 2

    • Thanks. Just added the note. ThinkPad Tablet 2 isn't really ThinkPad, and X1 Carbon Touch has just been released so I guess that got excluded.

Well I do hope Lenovo do well and provide us good bargains, as I am a Lenovo user myself and buy Lenovo gears for people who work on OzBargain.

      • I spend more time looking at ozbargain than I do working. Does that qualify me for Lenovo gears? ;-)

        • We'll see whether we can do a Lenovo giveaway this year :)

  • I hate to be a little off-topic, but is it just me or do lenovo's thinkpads look like they are straight from 2003? They are kinda ugly.

That said, it's a nice deal I suppose, thanks for posting.

thinkpads look like they are straight from 2003

That's why we love them :) Well the EDGE series is a bit flashy. My wife got a EDGE S430 just before Christmas (with this deal) and it was quite a nice looking laptop (comparing to my T410).

    • Go back even further! I've enjoyed the design since my first IBM ThinkPad 390E in 1999.

  • Gotta agree about stuffing up the trackpoint buttons, first thing I noticed on the Helix. Can't say I like the direction Thinkpads are moving in, hate the new keyboard layout

Yeah not sure who this Scotto character think he is. Trying to source deals for us, what a jerk

      • +5

I heard that this Scotty guy was sending phishing PMs to users. Can we get a mod to ban him? or even better ask the site admin to do it?

    • +1

You can click on Hide from Listing to delist all the Lenovo deals, if you are a site hard Apple fan :)

      • Did you mean sh*t hard? ;)

  • Crap. I was after the Carbon Touch. Nevermind, my mate's wife works at Lenovo anyway so at worst I'll always get 15% discount through their EPP.

  • Scotty, does this only work on base cost? Tried on the ThinkPad Edge E330 with upgrades (processor, ram & HD), total cost $688.20, coupon not valid.

    • +1

Hmm. Let me check with Lenovo.

    • Not working with Thinkpad W530 either.

  • "support situation in Australia"

Do you mean the recent changes they have made to their contractor? or the fact that US based call-center/dispatchers seem to pride themselves on sending the wrong parts.

We only have Lenovo work stations and desktops because they have been solid product with stellar support but as both these points have weakened we will be looking at other options also this year. That said I still think Lenovo make a great product.

Hammer them hard for a deal, extended warranties too!

    • Yes exactly. My T410 had a failed hard drive last April and the replacement service was fast and hassle free. However @neil's ThinkPad had some issues 2nd half of last year. Had the whole laptop picked up to be replaced last week — supposed to be done in 48 hours. He is still waiting for it. Yes we have NBD on all business laptops.

I guess Lenovo basically wants to inquire OzBargain about market condition and how they can sell more computers. IMHO their high-end stuffs are great and their budget gears (EDGE/L-Series) are value for money, good built quality comparing with equivalent HP Pavilion, Dell Inspiron, Acer Aspire, etc. They should sell by themselves — IF they can pick up the support again.

  • Any recommendation for the "ultraportable or ultrabook" type of laptops, or something that is just relatively light in general?

    • I got the Carbon X1. It is light, plays WoW and other games OK. The battery is pretty good and I like the backlit keyboard.

Although compared to similar laptops it is pretty expensive.

  • I have not got this WSJA4205 code to work. For example the Thinkpad E430 with GT635M that starts at $799(base model, not one of those back-to-school specials). Not for the E530 (starting at $839), either. What can this actually be used for?

    • I spoke to someone from Lenovo online and they informed me that the code WSJA4205 had expired(!). The customer service was not aware of any specials running this weekend. Erm, can Scotty please check with them?

      • Just talked to the guys from Lenovo today about the latest code not working. They should be looking at it now. Yes they can confirm that the code is supposed to be for 17-22 Jan.

  • I am looking at getting a X1 Carbon Touch this year as my wife's work laptop so some deals on that would be good.

Lenovo LT1423p from CES looked interesting. It’s a wireless touch screen second monitor.

  • Still no joy with code: WSJA4205 at 17.30 Scotty - Any update from lenovo as to when it will be live and if the code will change?

    Thanks.

    • Sorry no joy here either :( If you just google that coupon code you'll see that it's broadcasted to quite a few sites as well — even on Lenovo's Google cache page! All I can say is that something really stuffed up there. It meant to be for this weekend though so maybe it would be available tomorrow or Saturday.

  • Still no ssd option on the E530!!

  • Just tried putting an E430 in my cart and checking out with the coupon code - no love here yet! Will try again tomorrow, but as far as I know, today is the 17th …

New code WSJA4419, and it worked perfectly!

Woohoo! One can get one of the back-to-school specials E530, customised with 1600x900 screen for just a few cents above $603!

I like the E530 configuration because most of them come with GT635M as standard. It is a decent enough card for most gaming needs. (Well if you are serious you would get a gaming desktop.)

Intel Core i5-3210M Processor (3M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz)
    Windows 8 64
    15.6" W HD (1366x768) AntiGlare, Midnight Black
NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M Graphics with 2GB VRAM (WWAN or mSATA capable)
    4 GB DDR3 - 1600MHz (1 DIMM)
Keyboard US English With Number Pad
    500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
    ThinkPad a/b/g/n Wireless & Bluetooth 4.0 (2x2 ABGN & BT 4.0)

    • Thanks!!! This is embarrassing that the coupon code given to me from Lenovo still isn't working…

    • won't work for the s430 as ecoupon price should be $899 at the very most according to the link but is $936 if you apply WSJA4419. s420specials won't work. Lenovo are soooo stoopid.
