Same as this post except bigw is out of stocks. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/90121
Probably price match at ow if bigw refills their stocks for the same price. If anyone is in the market for a superzoom compact camera, Panasonic TZ30 aka zs20 in US ($235@ DWI) will be the one worth considering. Although TZ40 will be out in March, the price may drop in the near future.

How would the image quality of something like this compare to my Galaxy S3 phone?
Image quality is dictated by many factors - sensor design/type/size, the quality of the optics, image processor and so forth.
It would be unrealistic to compare the S3 to the Nikon as each is designed for a specific purpose - the S3 is a 'camera' slapped onto the back of a phone that probably costs $5 in materials while the Nikon is a dedicated consumer camera built to that requirement.
I would say in almost all quality measurements the nikon would beat the S3 - except in video where the S3 can do 1080P but the Nikon is limited to 720P - that said, I haven't look at the actual resolvable resolution of S3 video which may be no higher than Nikons 720P.

"except in video where the S3 can do 1080P but the Nikon is limited to 720P"
Resolution is not the end of the story, given that the Nikon does 720p recording in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, the bitrate is going to substantially higher, meaning the video will be a lot more clearer despite less pixel count.
Ever wondered why Youtube '1080p' doesn't look as crisp as blu-ray: bit-rate.
above all most Digi-cams like this one have far superior zooming capability and much faster apertures to freeze the action so you don't get blurring, above all the ergonomics help big time in holding the camera steady - oh! and the bulitin flash, again no comparison.
Thanks for the replies. I know comparing phone to digital SLR is chalk and cheese, but I asked because my phone is what I would potentially be upgrading from. That's also why I only asked about image quality. Cheers.
You may find a Canon IXUS a nice compact (and sexy) camera if your accustomed to portability while maintaining respectable image quality. The Nikon while having an impressive zoom range it big and bulky compared to a compact camera / smart phone.
Looking on ebay you can get one of the lower end IXUS cameras from HK for around $150 — better still keep a look out on this site for bargain priced compact cameras that fellow ozbargainers run into.
is this one a digital SLR ? i though it was only compact camera?
a bit old it seems; takes 4 AA batteries
The Coolpix L310 was added to Nikon's Life range in February 2012 and is a budget, 21x optical zoom camera.

http://www.ephotozine.com/article/nikon-coolpix-l310-digital…Actually, some ppl prefer aa batteries because it's easier and cheaper to maintain. Just buy a few rechargable ones when they are on sale.
Eneloop!!
Shame that it requires 4 AA batteries…. If only it had a single rechargeable battery pack.
AA batteries are a lot easier to source and last just as long if the camera is specced correctly. Propriety battery packs often can't be bought at all a year or two after a camera is released. You can buy AAs anywhere in an emergency, try getting a battery pack in a small country town when it's 5 minutes to an important wedding…
A year or two you'll be buying a new camera.
This or the samsung WB100?
$94 for a DSLR look alike camera? Thats cheap.
Looks decent enough. As others have said, I like the idea of standard AA batteries on a camera that you may take on holidays (even if it makes the body bulkier) as it means if you're out and about and the battery dies (and you haven't packed some spares), you can always walk into a shop and buy some alkalines to last you the day. Quality of images - including video - should be better than with a 'phone (bigger lens, optical zoom, shake reduction/VR, etc)…. although of course the issue is you almost always have your mobile with you, but with a camera like this you need to make a conscious decision to take it with you…
Hi All,
I am looking to buy a reasonable digital camera before next week. I want to use it for a trip mid next week.
I already have a DSLR but it's not convenient to take in this particular trip. I want to buy a good quality point and shoot camera for under $200. I prefer Canon or Sony with SD card (not MMC) and rechargable battery (not regular battery ones like this model)
Do you have any suggestion with model, price and the place to buy?? Any help please??Probably leaving the run a little late, and you dont say where you're going, but you might be able to find a Sony TX20 (or the previous model) for around the $200 mark. Image quality is decent enough (although of course not as good as a DSLR) but you can toss it in the luggage, or even pool, and not worry about damaging it. I took an older version of this to Bali last year and it was great.
ol gil needs a new shiny camera
