Here for the camera experts who will tell me if this is/was worth it for the price.

This is a pretty specialised video camera. If you aren't already looking for one it's not going to be suitable for you.

Can I just say that your reasons to avoid Blackmagic cameras don’t make sense. Most of their cameras use lenses that aren’t M4/3, and you can edit in any program you like. Hell, if you’re not going to use Resolve you can sell the included licence and get an even better overall deal :p

    • If you need to ask then this isn't for you.

      • True.
        Ignorance is bliss.

I’d say it’s just worth it for the price. It’s a little outdated now, and most likely you’ll need adapters to use any decent lenses. You could probably find the 6K for not much more which works with EF lenses (this is why I chose the 6K).

Both options have fantastic colour science and are almost too easy to use, I love the interface of BM cameras.

Still, they’ve both been superseded multiple times, so if I was shopping now I’d spend extra on the 6K Pro, Full Frame, or Pyxis, but not because the 4K and 6K are bad in any way, just a bit on the older side.

This is the best summary of these cameras.

    • Amazing image quality for the price, but you will need to both learn how to drive it manually and also spend a few hundred more on things like batteries, cages, cards/storage etc.

They are basic in tech but you could get 2 or 3 of these with some solid cheap M43 primes and an ATEM switcher for podcast/production work and it would still cost less than 1 flagship/higher-end body

Kind of people are happy with their phones now, who is going to fork out nearly $1.5K for that?

I paid close to this when it first came out. Was a great camera five years ago; b-roll cam at best these days.

Okay colour, but it has a noticeable “video” motion about it compared to better cameras.

Really more if you have a particular M4/3 Lens preference or availability - or if you’re shooting factual / documentary and want to have a small, DSLR camera profile.

    • Even with a preference for M4/3 I'd probably go with the GH5 mk2, might not be up there with colour but it's better in pretty much every other way.

    • What do you mean video motion?

      • Agreed the "video motion" comment deserves explanation.

Here's footage shot with this camera, it does not look like "video motion". It's all about colour grading, lens choice, and… how much fake film grain you apply ;-)

        • Yeah I was wondering if he meant that overly “digital” look

        • Without clicking on it, I’m going to guess that footage is:

          • on sticks and/or
          • shot in HFR/slow motion

Try panning or taking it off sticks in 24p. If you can’t see with your own eyes then you’ve not shot on anything bigger than a consumer camera, in which case - I can’t help you.

@bootlace: Well, you still didn’t really explain what you meant, which was the original question

          • @bootlace: LOL, what? It was a simple question: explain what you meant by "video motion".

Also "on sticks", what are you talking about? You mean a tripod? Why not just say "tripod" LOL. Maybe watch the video so you're not wasting our time with uninformed guesswork?

If you can’t see with your own eyes then you’ve not shot on anything bigger than a consumer camera,

Hahaha, LOL this isn't a dick swinging contest mate. Relax. We're ordinary people talking about cameras.

The camera has good dynamic range, but now I suspect your criticism of the camera comes from your failed attempt to shoot anything good with it. Perhaps I can help with some tips on composition and levelling up your unwatchable clickbait B-roll? :-)

Don't understand the B-Roll cam at best statement… this is a phenomenal camera for the price.
Although it's old, I haven't seen another camera at this price that films 4K RAW with at least 11.6 stops of dynamic range.

I use this daily, and my only improvement request would be auto focus, but it is branded within the cinema camera space, so it's expected to be a fully manual operation video camera.

Awesome. Best of luck to all you videographers.

"Comes with the full version of DaVinci Resolve Studio" - does that equate to a "saving" of approx. $363?I have no idea, so flame away…

Yes, and you can sell the licence they include if you already have it. I did, so takes some off the price that way too.

    5+ year old camera

  • +3

Do people still record movies in the cinema?

  • Pocket Cinema Camera..? ok looks like I need bigger and deeper pockets.

These cameras are excellent. Preordered the 4K when it was announced and still have & use it today, recording to SSD is very handy for longform content where it needs to run for hours. My Z8 and Z6iii like most modern cameras are superior for most things today but definitely still holds it's own. Fantastic body if you know how to drive it and has been rock solid for 6 years

I think these are still one of the best options for podcast/multicam style shoots too where AF isn't as necessary. You can adapt just about any lens, and there's a lot of really nice native M43 glass available.

  • If I have a Lumix gh4, and only shoot video for YouTube etc, would this be an improvement?

    • This would be in a nicer video format for editing.
