should also be noted that all subsequent updates on DaVinci Resolve Studio are FREE

Da Vinci can be registered on two machines. Just saying.

  • How is this different from the free version you can download?

    • +6

The free version has feature limits. You try to use it, such as auto subtitles or whatever it is called, and a popup appears telling you to upgrade. There are certain functionalities disabled in the free version.

      • I also think you need the paid version for 4K editing.

        • Yeah and GPU rendering. People should Google it to see the difference.

        • +5

The free version allows up to 4K 60hz. The limitation was eased.
HEVC YUV 422 video will need a Studio licence, but you can convert it to Pro-res 422 and then process it in the free version.

The free version is very capable by itself, but the Studio version adds a number of features and unlocks some limits. e.g., higher resolution outputs (the free version limits to 4K), more video encoding options, hardware acceleration, certain effects and utilities.

A quick Google will return a number of articles laying out all the details.

The free version is excellent, but the Studio version is very reasonably priced, especially when you consider it’s for life and you get free updates.

      • Well said, its pretty amazing what you can do in the free version tbh great place for anyone to start out but as you get more into the editing, you'll find increasing barriers that make the paid version well worth it.

      • its also a lot cheaper

  • Been waiting for DaVinci Resolve Studio to go on Humble Bundle for cheap, but that may never happen.

    • +2

Hugely doubt that. I've found most humble bundle items end up as shovelware or indicative of an upgraded full priced version around the corner

  • Any opinion on differences between this and FCP?

    • Both are great but Resolve has better colour correction and grading abilities. I found coming from Premiere Pro, Resolve more intuitive.
